Music programs at School of Rock San Jose combine one-on-one lessons with group band practices

Programs we offer

All Ages

At School of Rock San Jose, our students can take online, one-on-one music instruction from the comfort of their homes. We call this program School of Rock Remote. This online music program contains weekly one-on-one instruction conducted by our expert School of Rock instructors in a safe virtual lesson room.
Students will receive their training using our proprietary education program, The School of Rock Method™, which couples live video lessons with our proprietary Method App™, SongFirst Approach™ and Method Books™.

All of our music programs for kids, teens, and adults are designed to help students gain amazing musical proficiency. School of Rock’s online music lesson program is no exception. Online guitar lessons, online piano lessons, online drum lessons, online singing lessons and online bass guitar lessons are all offered through the School of Rock Remote online program.

Little Wing music program for toddlers and preschoolers in San Jose
Little Wing
Ages 3-5

At School of Rock San Jose our Little Wing music program for preschoolers and toddlers teaches students foundational music skills by playing games and participating in other interactive musical activities. Little Wing students have one weekly group music lesson in which they use classic rock songs to learn about rhythm, song structure, melody and dynamics through play.

The Path to Take the Stage

The Little Wing music program is the first step in a young musician's journey. At School of Rock San Jose, toddlers and preschoolers who show an interest in music should start with Little Wing. As they get older, they will progress into the Rookies program, followed by Rock 101 and the Performance Program.

Rookies music program for children in San Jose
Ages 6-7

At School of Rock San Jose, our music program for children with no previous musical experience (typically ages 6 to 7-years-old) is called Rookies. Rookies students have one weekly group music lesson where they learn fundamentals like chords, rhythm and song structure. Kids get to learn and experiment with multiple instruments so they can later decide which one they ultimately want to continue pursuing in Rock 101.

All of our music programs are designed to inspire students to learn and develop a strong musical proficiency. At School of Rock San Jose, younger students who are not ready for a more comprehensive program like Rock 101 can start in Rookies. Additionally, students who have completed the Little Wing program will progress into the Rookies music program. No prior musical experience is needed for Rookies. Once your child is ready for private music lessons (typically older than first or second graders), they will graduate into our Rock 101 program.

Ages 8-13

Rock 101 is one of School of Rock San Jose's top programs for kids and beginners. Students have one weekly group rehearsal where they learn to play classic rock songs that have been simplified for beginner musicians. Additionally, Rock 101 students in San Jose have a weekly private music lesson with an instructor who helps them learn the concepts and skills behind their performance songs.

Our music programs for kids in San Jose are designed to get students on stage performing, with the goal of building strong musical proficiency. Younger students at School of Rock San Jose who have participated in the Rookies program can move to our Rock 101 music program once they’re ready. Additionally, students (typically ages 8 to 13-years-old) can begin Rock 101 without any prior experience. The goal of this rock program is to quickly develop a basic competence on students’ chosen instruments before moving on to our famous Performance Program.

Ages 8-18

The Performance Program at School of Rock San Jose is our hallmark music program, where tens of thousands of students enroll each year. It consists of a weekly group rehearsal where kids and teens learn by playing rock music's most iconic songs with a band composed of their peers. Students are assigned songs and parts that are tailored to them based on their age, experience and ability to learn new skills and concepts. Students then work through their parts in weekly private music lessons, refining the skills and concepts that those songs introduce. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare kids and teens for live performances. Every few months, School of Rock San Jose Performance Program students take the stage and play at local San Jose music venues in front of a live audience.

School of Rock San Jose's music programs for kids and teens are designed to inspire by getting students on stage and performing. All of our other music education programs focus on readying students for our famous Performance Program. This is where students develop incredible musical skills. Performance Program students have often gone through our Rock 101 program first or have some previous basic music experience. These young musicians will have custom development plans outlined by their instructors with key concepts reinforced during private lessons and group rehearsals, all with the goal of performing live at a San Jose music venue.

Age 12 and over

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens teaches the fundamentals of songwriting, arrangement and music theory, and helps students compose original works.  At School of Rock San Jose, songwriting students receive one weekly private lesson where they learn concepts, technique and theory on an instrument of their choice. These principles are then applied in a weekly group lesson where students work together on songwriting exercises and lyrical workshops.  Every few months, Songwriting students take the stage to perform or band together to record their original songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens in San Jose is designed to create musical proficiency through the creation of original music. Students at School of Rock San Jose who have completed our Rock 101 program can move to our Songwriting program once they’re ready. Additionally, new students who have prior experience with and basic knowledge of an instrument can also begin Songwriting. The program culminates with a live showcase where students perform their original compositions in bands at a local music venue. Students taking the Songwriting Program online will remotely record their original songs to produce a demo of the class's music.

House Band
Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock San Jose House Band music program gives students under 18 the opportunity to join a gigging band composed of fellow musicians from their school. These students perform additional live shows throughout the year. All students in the Performance Program have the opportunity to audition for a spot in School of Rock San Jose's House Band. Once selected, House Band members become leaders in their School of Rock community and perform live shows at CA rock venues throughout the year.

Performance is the core of School of Rock's educational approach. Therefore, we create additional opportunities for students to perform on stages throughout San Jose and the rest of CA. The House Band music program allows each school's most talented students the opportunity to join a band and play routinely in front of live audiences. Once a member, students will gain real music experience associated with gigging musicians and will become leaders and mentors inside the School of Rock community.

The AllStars national tour features the best child and teen musicians
Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock AllStars Tour takes the very best students from around the world and sends them on a nationwide summer tour across the United States. Less than 1% of School of Rock students are selected each year to represent School of Rock as an AllStar. All Performance Program students are eligible to audition for this prestigious program. The intensive audition process starts off with video submissions followed by live auditions. Once selected, AllStar students will have an authentic touring experience including traveling on a tour bus, doing tour publicity and starring in nightly performances at famous venues and festivals during a two-week tour.

Becoming an AllStar is the highest level of achievement for a School of Rock student. They play on legendary stages large and small, including The Knitting Factory, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, The Troubadour and Lollapalooza. AllStar students often go on to have accomplished careers in the music industry. Former AllStars have gone on to become touring artists, star in Broadway musicals, get signed to record deals, become finalists on talent competitions like "The Voice" and "American Idol" and have other notable roles in the music industry.

At School of Rock San Jose, we offer beginner guitar lessons for kids. Our expert guitar instructors guide your child from start to finish with private instruction and weekly group band rehearsals. School of Rock San Jose offers beginner singing lessons for kids. Our unique, performance-based approach develops students' musical proficiency by preparing them to perform live. At School of Rock San Jose, our vocal coaches are practicing musicians who integrate key music fundamentals—breathing, posture and more—into a curriculum based on performing with a band. Each week, beginner singing students participate in a private singing lesson and a band rehearsal.

School of Rock San Jose teaches adults how to sing in our innovative Adult Program. Students develop vocal skills at a challenging pace designed to help you see results with every singing lesson. Beginner Keyboard Lessons for Kids

At School of Rock we teach differently than other music schools in San Jose. Our curriculum is performance-based, meaning that we prepare students to perform. Our piano lessons for beginners combine weekly private instruction with weekly band rehearsals. At School of Rock San Jose, our beginner keyboard lessons for kids take key concepts and music fundamentals—finger placement, scales, key differentiation and more—and teach them through popular rock songs. This approach inspires and engages students, which results in attaining a high level of musical proficiency. Our piano teachers have years of experience teaching music in the San Jose area, and know how to coach and motivate students of any skill level to play the keyboard.

The School of Rock San Jose Adult Program puts beginner keyboard students in a band. Adult Program students in the San Jose area learn to play piano through a combination of weekly private beginner piano lessons and weekly band rehearsals. All of School of Rock San Jose’s music teachers are experienced musicians devoted to helping students attain musical proficiency. Our instructors guide students one-on-one to personalize learning, inspire confidence and build social skills.

Amanda Smith Piano Teacher, Vocal Instructor

Amanda Smith is a New York transplant and new to California. She recently joined the School of Rock family as a vocal and performance coach.

Amanda lived and worked in New York City for over 10 years, studying and performing musical theater, individual voice and audition technique. She toured the east coast and the Midwest in a children’s theater adaptation of "Beauty and the Beast," and also voiced the character of Nell the shooting star in the best-selling children’s book "Fireflies and Shooting Stars: the Tale of Enzo."

She has spent the last year and a half sailing around the world, working for Carnival Cruise Line as a lead singer for their house rock band, and is excited to step foot back on land to perform locally and to teach others how to use and enhance their musical gifts. Amanda is excited to work with such talented musicians here at School of Rock.

Alonso Hernandez Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher

Alonso Hernandez is a seasoned musician from the Bay Area music scene. He has been a bass and guitar teacher at School of Rock since 2015. Affectionately referred to as the Bass God, Alonso has toured the world performing with multiple groups that cover a wide diversity of styles. He has performed on the Warped Tour with his pop punk group Pounders, has had multiple tours of Japan with legendary nu metal group Insolence and has played throughout the US with jazz/hip-hop group SoleJive. Having studied jazz for nearly 15 years, Alonso is able to teach all musical styles. Along with teaching bass and guitar, he shares his experiences of live performance, touring, songwriting, the music business, showmanship and rock history with each of his students.

Alex Nguyen Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher, Drums Teacher

Alex is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and performer from San Jose,CA. He was introduced to music at an early age and has thus found his passion in life. In high school, Alex was part of the symphonic, concert, marching and steel drum ensembles, where he learned the importance of being a well-rounded musician as well as playing with others. With these programs, he had the opportunity to play in various venues such as Disneyland and all the way across the world at the Sydney Opera House in Australia. He attended the University of Oregon, where he studied Music, as well as branched off and played original music in bands. In the Bay Area, Alex plays in Love District, Socorra and other projects.

He does his best to share his passion and enthusiasm for music with all of his students. Since joining School of Rock, he finds joy in inspiring his students to play and helping them to find their own voice in music. You will never find him happier than when he is playing or teaching.

Alex Pipkins Guitar Teacher, Piano Teacher, Vocal Instructor

Alex Pipkins is a teacher and singer/songwriter from Austin, Texas. He's benefited from almost two decades of musical training, including studying Music Education at the University of Texas at Arlington. Alex is a multi-instrumentalist who's performed in several punk rock and ska bands, as well as jazz ensembles and orchestras. He has taught guitar, keyboard, bass and vocal lessons to a wide range of ages. Alex finds nothing in life more fun than playing and talking about music, and is beyond excited to be teaching at School of Rock.

Carl Valdez Drums Teacher

Carl Valdez brings along 40+ years of musical experience to School of Rock. He was the founding member of legendary hardcore punk band Ill Repute, featured in their own documentary and book ("Clean Cut American Kids - the Story of Ill Repute”). Through the years, he has worked alongside famed pop/punk record producer Jerry Finn (Green Day, Blink 182, Rancid). They have been inducted into the Ventura County Music Awards Hall of Fame. Ill Repute also has a song on the hit Netflix show “Stranger Things."

Carl's drum experience also expands to other genres, including orchestral, community concert bands and Dixieland swing. He is also a Scottish bagpipe side drummer. He is currently a member of the Silicon Valley Pipe Band, an award-winning competitive Scottish bagpipe and drum group based out of Saratoga, CA. Carl also has years of experience performing on other instruments including the clarinet, saxophone, mandolin and guitar.

Brian Hart Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher

Brian currently serves as a guitar and bass instructor at School of Rock San Jose, where you can trust his commitment to providing students with lessons learned from his vast experience.

Jonathan Shaheen General Manager

Jonathan Shaheen has been teaching at School of Rock in multiple roles since 2016, including as an instructor/show director and most recently as our Music Director. Jonathan and his wife Alyssa live in San Jose and both studied music in Australia, where they met. Jonathan is passionate about creating music, but he’s most passionate about instilling a drive and desire for music and inspiring students to pursue music and find their voice. Jonathan and Alyssa both love San Jose and are very involved both in the city and the music scene here in The Bay. Jonathan is excited to step into his role as our General Manager, and to take the school forward by partnering with our community and its musicians to make School of Rock a staple in San Jose for many years to come.

Robbie Fureby Drums Teacher

Influenced early on by family members to play music, Robbie Fureby’s interest in drums has flourished into a limitless passion. During the 13 years he’s been playing, Robbie earned an Associate of Arts in Music Performance in drums from Musicians Institute in Hollywood where he studied with many talented drummers, including Rob Carson and Fred Dinkins. Robbie is currently the drummer for an alternative rock band, Soy Sauce Control, who have released two professionally recorded EPs. Through teaching, Robbie is able to share his passion for drums, as well as the positivity music brings into his life. He is a drums teacher at School of Rock San Jose.

Socorra Camposanto Guitar Teacher, Vocal Instructor, Drums Teacher

Socorra Camposanto is a singer/songwriter from San Jose and has been teaching at School of Rock San Jose since 2014. She is a drummer-turned-guitar player and released her debut EP, "Break," in January 2017.

In April 2017 she was one of the featured musicians in "Content Magazine" and later that summer had the opportunity to open up for Blues Traveler at Music in the Park. Socorra is also heavily active in the local San Jose music scene and has worked with many local businesses and organizations to bring more live music to San Jose. At School of Rock, she has worked many positions, but these days she teaches Rock 101, Performance Group and our House Band.

Nick Maghoul Guitar Teacher

A former School of Rock San Mateo instructor, Nick Maghoul, who goes by Ace, started playing guitar in 1991 at the age of 11. He has been in numerous bands and writes his own original songs. Ace is very passionate about teaching and has taught in multiple different locations and schools across the Bay Area. His goal is to make learning a more enjoyable experience by encouraging students to mix theory with learning their favorite songs. He covers the following topics: intervals, major and minor scales, harmonic and melodic scales, pentatonic scales, building chords, determining key centers, modes, modal interchange, effects, pentatonic substitution and more. He is a guitar teacher at School of Rock San Jose.

Lily Roshan Rock 101 Teacher, Studio Coordinator

Before joining School of Rock as an instructor, Lily Roshan was a student at School of Rock for over three years. She played bass and sang for the school’s Performance groups and House Band. Lily has done studio recordings for bands of all genres and enjoys writing her own songs as well. She’s currently studying Music Technology and Composition in college. Lily is excited to work at School of Rock San Jose as a Rock 101 Teacher and Studio Coordinator so she can watch her new students enjoy the School of Rock experience as much as she did.

Robert Xavier Bass Guitar Teacher

Robert Xavier has been playing bass for 16 years now and guitar for the latter part. He loves all types of music, but specializes in R&B, funk and contemporary music. He spent the earlier part of his musical career as a studio musician in Los Angeles playing bass and guitar. He has gotten to work with some amazing producers and songwriters throughout his career. He has eight years of audio production experience tied in with four years of audio engineering. He looks forward to learning more and developing with all the students he teaches here at School of Rock San Jose as a bass guitar teacher and Rock 101 teacher.

Jacklyn Partida Vocal Instructor

Jacklyn Partida is a songwriter based in the Bay Area who specializes in pop and rock song production. She has written close to 200 songs to date. Born and raised in Santa Cruz, California, she has written and performed songs in several different musical projects since the age of 11, all of which have varied in genre. She has written songs for and performed as a vocalist/lead guitarist in local rock, metal and punk bands such as Jackie Rocks, Stellar Corpses, Requiem, Beautiful Deception and My Immortal Enemy. She has showcased her acoustic/pop songwriting abilities in a project with her sister called Dressed In Roses and performs many of those songs under her solo project. Jacklyn has had a colorful musical history and is now primarily a songwriter for her younger sister, Maddie Partida. She writes pop songs that resemble those in the top charts and performs live with Maddie as a guitarist/backup vocalist. Jacklyn strives to share with her students at School of Rock the vocal techniques, methods and industry experience that have helped improve her overall performance. She is a vocal instructor at School of Rock San Jose.

Chris Pounders Music Director

Chris Pounders was a part of the team that opened School of Rock here in San Jose. He spent three years building the community and culture both inside and outside of School of Rock. He is deeply connected to the San Jose music scene, and continues to release music and perform live. Before this leg of his musical journey, Chris was a performer in the international sensation "Stomp," and has also toured around the United States and in Canada with the Vans Warped Tour. Past television experiences include "The X-Factor," "America's Got Talent" and "Conan." Chris has recently returned from living in Los Angeles for a few years, where he honed his craft in multiple ways, including appearing in music videos by Taylor Swift, Ozzy Osborne and Mariah Carey. Chris is excited to be back in San Jose, ready to inspire students and keep the creative music community growing. Chris is joining School of Rock San Jose as our Music Director, but you will also find him teaching drum lessons and guitar lessons, and directing Performance shows.
