Programs we offer

Rookies music program for children
Ages 5-7

At School of Rock San Antonio, our music program for children with no previous musical experience (typically ages 5 to 7-years-old) is called Rookies. Rookies students have one weekly group music lesson where they learn fundamentals like chords, rhythm and song structure. Kids get to learn and experiment with multiple instruments so they can later decide which one they ultimately want to continue pursuing in Rock 101.

All of our music programs are designed to inspire students to learn and develop a strong musical proficiency. At School of Rock San Antonio, younger students who are not ready for a more comprehensive program like Rock 101 can start in Rookies. No prior musical experience is needed for Rookies. Once your child is ready for private music lessons (typically older than first or second graders), they will graduate into our Rock 101 program.

Ages 7-17

Rock 101 is one of School of Rock San Antonio's top programs for kids and beginners. Students have one weekly group rehearsal where they learn to play classic rock songs that have been simplified for beginner musicians. Additionally, Rock 101 students in San Antonio have a weekly private music lesson with an instructor who helps them learn the concepts and skills behind their performance songs.

Our music programs for kids in San Antonio are designed to get students on stage performing, with the goal of building strong musical proficiency. Younger students at School of Rock San Antonio who have participated in the Rookies program can move to our Rock 101 music program once they’re ready. Additionally, students (typically ages 7 to 17-years-old) can begin Rock 101 without any prior experience. The goal of this rock program is to quickly develop a basic competence on students’ chosen instruments before moving on to our famous Performance Program.

Performance music program for teens
Ages 8-18

The Performance Program at School of Rock San Antonio is our hallmark music program, where tens of thousands of students enroll each year. It consists of a weekly group rehearsal where kids and teens learn by playing rock music's most iconic songs with a band composed of their peers. Students are assigned songs and parts that are tailored to them based on their age, experience and ability to learn new skills and concepts. Students then work through their parts in weekly private music lessons, refining the skills and concepts that those songs introduce. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare kids and teens for live performances. Every few months, School of Rock San Antonio Performance Program students take the stage and play at local San Antonio music venues in front of a live audience.

School of Rock San Antonio's music programs for kids and teens are designed to inspire by getting students on stage and performing. All of our other music education programs focus on readying students for our famous Performance Program. This is where students develop incredible musical skills. Performance Program students have often gone through our Rock 101 program first or have some previous basic music experience. These young musicians will have custom development plans outlined by their instructors with key concepts reinforced during private lessons and group rehearsals, all with the goal of performing live at a San Antonio music venue.

Adult Program
Ages 18+

School of Rock San Antonio's Adult Program is for students over 18 years old who are looking to either improve their musical proficiency or pick up an instrument with no prior musical experience. As with most School of Rock music programs, the Adult Program uses a performance-based music education approach. This means the curriculum focuses on learning music concepts and applying them in a live performance setting. Our Adult Music Program includes one weekly private music lesson and a weekly group rehearsal. Every student at School of Rock San Antonio is placed in a band of fellow adults and then assigned specific songs as a way of learning key music concepts and skills. Adult students then take the stage to play at a live show in San Antonio.

The School of Rock San Antonio Adult Program is open to all experience levels and each student will follow a customized learning plan developed by their instructor. Adult students will work together during rehearsal to prepare for a live performance at a real rock venue in San Antonio.

Ages 12-18

The School of Rock San Antonio House Band music program gives students ages 12-18 the opportunity to join a gigging band composed of fellow musicians from their school. These students perform additional live shows throughout the year. All students in the Performance Program have the opportunity to audition for a spot in School of Rock San Antonio's House Band. Once selected, House Band members become leaders in their School of Rock community and perform live shows at TX rock venues throughout the year.

Performance is the core of School of Rock's educational approach. Therefore, we create additional opportunities for students to perform on stages throughout San Antonio and the rest of TX. The House Band music program allows each school's most talented students the opportunity to join a band and play routinely in front of live audiences. Once a member, students will gain real music experience associated with gigging musicians and will become leaders and mentors inside the School of Rock community.

The AllStars national tour features the best child and teen musicians
Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock AllStars Tour takes the very best students from around the world and sends them on a nationwide summer tour across the United States. Less than 1% of School of Rock students are selected each year to represent School of Rock as an AllStar. All Performance Program students are eligible to audition for this prestigious program. The intensive audition process starts off with video submissions followed by live auditions. Once selected, AllStar students will have an authentic touring experience including traveling on a tour bus, doing tour publicity and starring in nightly performances at famous venues and festivals during a two-week tour.

Becoming an AllStar is the highest level of achievement for a School of Rock student. They play on legendary stages large and small, including The Knitting Factory, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, The Troubadour and Lollapalooza. AllStar students often go on to have accomplished careers in the music industry. Former AllStars have gone on to become touring artists, star in Broadway musicals, get signed to record deals, become finalists on talent competitions like "The Voice" and "American Idol" and have other notable roles in the music industry.

Ages 13-19

The Center Stage Artist Search Program is an opportunity to be heard by a major record label. Singers from the ages of 13-19 can submit an audition video as part of the selection process. Selected artists will then have the chance to participate in a studio recording session, and perform at a live artist showcase with record label executives in Los Angeles. We'll also provide School of Rock songwriting camp scholarships for 100 applicants. Submit your video audition today.

At School of Rock San Antonio, our vocal coaches are practicing musicians who integrate key music fundamentals—breathing, posture and more—into a curriculum based on performing with a band. Each week, beginner singing students participate in a private singing lesson and a band rehearsal.

School of Rock San Antonio teaches adults how to sing in our innovative Adult Program. Students develop vocal skills at a challenging pace designed to help you see results with every singing lesson. Adult vocalists learn how to keep tempo, stay on-key and master advanced vocal techniques for a powerful and healthy voice. Our curriculum teaches students how to sing by using popular rock songs that emphasize key concepts. Keyboard Lessons for All Skill Levels

Beginner Keyboard Lessons for Kids

At School of Rock we teach differently than other music schools in San Antonio. Our curriculum is performance-based, meaning that we prepare students to perform. Our piano lessons for beginners combine weekly private instruction with weekly band rehearsals. At School of Rock San Antonio, our beginner keyboard lessons for kids take key concepts and music fundamentals—finger placement, scales, key differentiation and more—and teach them through popular rock songs. This approach inspires and engages students, which results in attaining a high level of musical proficiency. Our piano teachers have years of experience teaching music in the San Antonio area, and know how to coach and motivate students of any skill level to play the keyboard.

The School of Rock San Antonio Adult Program puts beginner keyboard students in a band. Adult Program students in the San Antonio area learn to play piano through a combination of weekly private beginner piano lessons and weekly band rehearsals. Our Experienced Music Teachers

All of School of Rock San Antonio’s music teachers are experienced musicians devoted to helping students attain musical proficiency. Our instructors guide students one-on-one to personalize learning, inspire confidence and build social skills.

Emilio Garza Guitar Teacher

Emilio's expertise is on guitar, bass and vocals. Emilio has been teaching at School of Rock San Antonio since 2014. He not only teaches how to play rock music, but also how to perform on stage! Emilio has played in many bands through the years and recently toured with a KISS tribute band. He played for Wolfpack here in San Antonio for several years and is currently in Arrowhead, a local rock band that performs throughout San Antonio and other South Texas cities. He is also in another KISS tribute band, Black Diamond, where he plays the role of Paul Stanley.

Emilio is a wealth of music information from working the stages of many great artists through the years. He plays all types of classic rock music and shreds with the best of them. He also understands guitar amps and the specifics needed to make a great sound.

Emilio teaches Rock 101 as well as our Performance Programs.

Sofi Lopez Guitar Teacher, Singing Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher, piano Teacher

Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, Sofi Lopez has always been musical for as long as she can remember. After graduating high school, she picked up the guitar and never turned back. After attending a couple years at Northwest Vista College where she studied with guitar teacher Dan Smith and performed in ensembles directed by Katchie Cartright, she transferred to Texas State University and graduated with a degree in guitar jazz studies. She has studied guitar with Mark Cruz and Russel Scanlon. She has also been in jazz combos and ensembles directed by Freddie Mendoza, Morris Nelms and Kieth Winking. Sofi has performed at the university but also at local jazz clubs like Kirby's Steakhouse, Swig, Club Luna and Firehouse Lounge in Austin. The Sofi Lopez Jazz Quartet has had their track, "Black Orpheus" (written by Luis Bonfa), played on the San Antonio Jazz radio station, KRTU 91.7. In Fall of 2014, the quartet was featured on KRTU's show, "The South Texas Jazz Project." This included a live studio performance and a brief interview. Sofi is currently the vocalist, guitar player and arranger of her own group but also has been called to play guitar or sing for groups like Midtown Jazz Sound, Hillcountry Jazz Bigband and The Powerhouse Big Band.

David Patton Singing Teacher, piano Teacher

David has been playing piano since he was three. He is heavily trained in music theory and has years of experience with both classical piano and rock keyboards. David's musical journey has included playing the bassoon for several all region bands, as well as in the Youth Orchestra of San Antonio, which included touring England. He also plays guitar, sax, drums and bass.

David attended School of Rock as a teenager and was a two-year School of Rock AllStar as a keyboard player and lead vocalist. He toured the east coast including venues like DC9 and Webster Hall as well as events like Lollapalooza and Gathering of the Vibes.

He is currently lead singer and keyboard player in the heavy metal band Alpha Syndrome.

Jason "Shakes" West Drum Teacher

Jason's been playing drums for over 25 years. He started playing at 11 years old. He's played with Sebastian Bach, Murder Dolls, Wednesday 13 and more. He currently plays with Evil United, Athanasia, Union Underground, Down Generation and Thunderhorse. Jason has been a touring drummer for the last 15 years and toured both the United States and overseas and now he's excited to be sharing his craft with the younger generation.

Sarah Miller Bass Guitar Teacher

Sarah teachers bass guitar lessons. She studied at Baylor University and performed with the Baylor Jazz Ensemble for four years. Afterwards she was part of a blues/rock band known as The South East Players based out of Austin, TX with a single album release. After moving back to San Antonio she has frequently performed with various jazz groups, as well as filled in for a few local punk, ska and tejano groups in and around town. In her own words, "Teaching the bass has been one of the best musical experiences yet and I hope to continue throughout my education as I study to pursue a Pharm D degree at The University of the Incarnate Word."

Gavin Massay Guitar Teacher

Gavin was a student and mentor at School of Rock for several years before graduating in 2016. He performed all over town as well as toured with the School of Rock House Band. He is currently studying Music Therapy with a focus on Guitar at University of Incarnate Word. Gavin currently plays in several bands around San Antonio, including the Sanchovies. He teaches Rock 101 and guitar lessons.

Karly Lopez Guitar Teacher, Drum Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher, Piano Teacher

Karly has been playing the piano for over 20 years and the guitar for over 15 years. Music has always been her passion. She has performed with several bands, including Sweet Tooth, and currently plays with Top Heavy. She has played at several music festivals and has opened for Great White. She has a Bachelors of Science in Audio Production from the Art Institute of Austin. She recorded a track with Bootsy Collins on the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus. She has worked as a sound engineer at several local venues and records all of her own music and music demos. Karly teaches guitar, bass, drums and keys and is the head of our Rookies program.

Leah Ehrhard Piano Teacher, Singing Teacher

Leah is mainly a solo performing artist. Leah started her musical journey at the age of four, when she began taking vocal lessons. At 10 she also picked up guitar. She travelled to Germany, Austria and Hungary with her choir and performed for the Texas Music Educator's Association (TMEA) several times. Starting in 2011, she began performing with several local bands including DeerVibes and Michael J and the Foxes. She is currently working with an independent music label, Mind and Soul Music, and is going to be releasing an EP next year. Leah is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and piano player.

John Hernandez Guitar Teacher

John has been playing guitar for 32 years. He has opened for all-time greats such as Eddie Money, Cinderella, Def Tones, Lita Ford, Steve Vai and more. John has been in many bands including Sauce, a wedding band from Austin, as well as Christian Castro and Drive. He is currently the lead guitarist in Retro Nouveau. John's awards include Guitar Wars 13, a Steve Vai competition, and the San Antonio Music Awards 'Best Guitar Player' for three years in a row. John's music repertoire includes knowing over 400 songs. He's a songwriter, guitar teacher and music performer.

Dave Taub Music Director, Drum Teacher

Dave began playing drums at age 10 and went on to study music at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. His mentors included Vic Firth, Michael Shrieve (of Santana), Gary Chafee, Alan Dawson and Charles Perry. In 1980, Dave returned to New York to play with John Lennon's band. After John's untimely death later that year, Dave stayed in New York to become a session drummer and sideman. Dave began playing professionally at 13, has played on many jingles and has worked with, or performed with, greats including Chaka Khan, Little Feat, Mountain, Leon Russell, James Brown, The Outlaws, Paul Butterfield, Bonnie Raitt, Levon Helm, Charlie Daniels, Waylon Jennings, Steve Young, James Montgomery Blues Band, Sad Cafe, Papa John Creach, Nik Kershaw, Kenny White, The Talking Heads and others. Dave is a founding member of The Power Section.

Dominic Trevino Drum Teacher

Dom has a Bachelor of Arts in Music with an emphasis in Audio Engineering. He is a drummer, vocalist and audio engineer. Dom performed with the UIW Cardinal Chorale with concerts at the Tobin Center, as well as at Lincoln Center in NY, has played in the pit for many local theatre productions and has performed with Marcy Grace, Statesboro Revue and Keep it Cute. Dom is the co-founder of a music concert series called Vibes Live and was a co-music director for San Antonio's premier samba drum and dance entertainment group.

Marcelo Coronel Guitar Teacher, Piano Teacher

Marcelo Coronel is currently in the band Rhythm Report and plays throughout San Antonio. He is an accomplished keyboard player, as well as an avid guitarist and singer. As a former School of Rock Allstar (three years in a row), Marcelo toured the country playing at notable venues and large music festivals, such as Lollapalooza. Through School of Rock he was also given the opportunity to play with famous musicians, such as Butch Trucks from The Allman Brothers Band and Phil X. Marcelo attended Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee where he studied and learned about Music Business. His love for music was nurtured and encouraged at School of Rock when he was a student. He aims to give the same experience to the students that come his way. He is a guitar teacher and piano teacher at School of Rock San Antonio.

Analina Devora Drum Teacher

Analina Devora has been playing drums for as long as she can remember. Her grandfather, a former member of the Naval Academy Jazz Band, taught her how to play at the age of five. Since then Analina has been playing drums in school jazz ensembles and various local bands in San Antonio and Austin, including Take Note Youth Band, Jason Kane and the Jive, award-winning Latin band Creciendo Fuerte and many others. She has taught many private students over the years and is very excited to be working with an awesome place like School of Rock San Antonio. Analina is currently a senior at St. Mary’s University studying Music Performance with a focus on drum set. She is also a year-round performer at SeaWorld San Antonio, playing drums and percussion for their main stage Halloween show, Monster Stomp. She loves teaching and sharing the gift of music in hopes of spreading the fun she has experienced with others. She is a drum teacher at School of Rock San Antonio.
