Programas

  • School of Rock Silver Spring's Performance Program is all about translating our students' abilities to play in the lesson room to performing for real on stage. In addition to refining their overall skill and proficiency as musicians, students learn what comes with being part of a band: teamwork, collaboration, and the special brand of fun that only comes from sharing awesome experiences with others.

Students learn, absorb, and perform iconic hits from some of history's greatest rock and roll performers including The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Van Halen, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and many more. No matter what they perform, our students will learn incredible skills and enjoy epic experiences that will last a lifetime.

All students in Silver Spring's Performance Program can expect:

    • Weekly private music lessons on guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, and/or vocals
    • Weekly band rehearsal to get students prepared for real shows
    • Real-life performances on stage at amazing venues
    • Advanced instruction in fundamentals such as stage performance, harmonies, musicianship, and more
    • Fun, music, and education wrapped into one all-inclusive experience!

  • Our Rock 101 Program at School of Rock Silver Spring is focused on making the first steps of a young student’s journey both fun and successful. The days of mundane music instruction are over. At School of Rock Silver Spring, we believe that playing music together is the only real path to mastering an instrument and developing a true love for music.

In Rock 101, we focus our instruction on the one instrument that students have chosen to study. Whether we’re teaching scales, chords, notes, or time signatures, we put concepts in context so students understand how the principles they learn are applied to real music. Using some of the world’s most famous songs and infusing fun into every chord, Rock 101 allows Silver Spring students to enhance their skills and move on to our Performance Program.

School of Rock Silver Spring’s Rock 101 students can expect:

    • Weekly private music lessons on guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, and/or vocals
    • Weekly group rehearsals to reinforce basic concepts and skills in a band setting
    • A firm grasp of the fundamentals of technique and music theory
    • An understanding of what it means to play solo and in a group
    • Real knowledge gained through real fun!

  • Our top performers can audition for School of Rock Silver Spring’s most prestigious honor: a spot in our AllStars program! Equipped with incredible musical abilities, killer work ethics and leadership skills, our AllStars have the talent and drive to grow into the next generation of musical greats.

Every summer, our AllStars embark on an authentic concert tour for a one-of-a-kind experience. Our Silver Spring musicians perform with All Star bands in multiple live shows at high-profile venues across the country, including Red Rocks, Lollapalooza, Hangout Music Fest, NAMM, Gathering of the Vibes, and countless others. AllStars also get to share the stage and learn from music legends like Alice Cooper, Eddie Vedder, and Slash, to name a few. The AllStars experience gives aspiring musicians the best glimpse of what a professional music career is like.

AllStars selected from School of Rock Silver Spring can expect:

  • School of Rock Silver Spring is now enrolling for our Adult Performance Program, where adult students of all proficiency levels can explore and conquer the world of music. We get our students playing and learning at lightning-quick speeds through practical performance rather than run-of-the-mill music instruction programs. At School of Rock Silver Spring, the thrill of the performance is just as important as learning the skill to rock.

Our adult students learn the fundamentals of music, including scales, chords, notes, progressions, and more, through some of the most iconic songs and sounds in music history. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of rock ‘n roll or a metal-loving head-banger at home in the mosh pit, our teachers know how to best connect your love for music with a passion for learning it.

All students in School of Rock Silver Spring’s Adult Program can expect:

    • Fast-paced instruction in one of our great musical offerings: guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and/or vocals
    • Weekly private instruction catered to your goals and level of proficiency
    • Rehearsals with others just like you to get ready for real shows at live music venues
    • An understanding of music theory and technique fundamentals, learned through songs from your favorite music genre
    • Fun, instruction, and a great progression of practical skills wrapped all into one!

  • School of Rock Silver Spring’s Rookies Program is designed for first and second graders to provide a fun introduction to music fundamentals. Among other tools, we use proprietary setups for guitar, bass, drums and keyboard to provide a gateway to understanding music. The skills and passion for music that we teach our students gets them ready for Rock 101 and a lasting appreciation for music.

Our Silver Spring Rookies learn the fundamental concepts of pitch, rhythm, form and dynamics with age-appropriate exercises, tools and games. We encourage our students to explore a variety of instruments and play styles so they can get familiar with all parts of the musical landscape; even the most incredible solo guitar players or drummers need to understand how the rest of the band works together.

All students in Silver Spring’s Rookies Program can expect:

    • Weekly group lessons using guitar, bass, keyboard and drums
    • Exposure to essential fundamentals like music theory, pitch and rhythm
    • A focus on teamwork and collaboration
    • An understanding of what it means to play solo and in a group
    • Fun combined with practical learning!

  • School of Rock Silver Spring’s music camps and workshops are designed to bring out the best performance in a fast-paced learning environment. Just like our standard programs, our camps offer a high-energy experience that is fun, creative and team-oriented. Our students learn music by playing it with their peers, guided by experienced instructors from the music community.

Gia Ashe graduated Berklee College of Music in 2007. In 2008 she packed up her life and moved back to Denver. Here, Gia began teaching private lessons in Guitar, Bass, Vocals, and Piano. Gia interned after college to work for Music Together as an early childhood education music instructor. She taught group guitar classes to adult students at a local Folk music school. In 2009 Gia joined the School of Rock Denver as a guitar substitute instructor. Gia soon recognized her passion in life was music education within Rock n Roll. Gia soon evolved into a show director teaching each instrument. As of March, 2012 Gia was hired on as the Assistant General Manger for the Littleton school, 8 miles south of the Denver location. A year later she accepted the position of General Manager. After 7 years in Colorado working at School of Rock, Gia felt the shift to head back east. To her delight, Gia found a new home at the Silver Spring School of Rock as their Studio Manager. Gia enjoys playing music with anyone and everyone, nature, cooking, dancing, jokes, a good cry, and most importantly, bringing rock n roll to the world one melodic, solo at a time.

A DC native, Ricardo "P"-Nut Johnson began his musical journey on the bass in the 5 th grade when he received his first instrument '“ a Sears electric guitar. He enjoyed the guitar but then he heard the bass in Rufus and Chaka Khan's Sweet Thing and from that point on "P"-Nut knew he wanted to be a bass player. Hearing of his new obsession, his uncle, a bass player in his own right, loaned him a bass and challenged him to see what he could learn by the time he got back from the road and the rest is history. During his years in the D.C. area, "P"-Nut played with various groups in a variety of styles. He played with the sensational vocal group Prim Degree, the cutting edge gospel group God's Creation, vocalist Gloria Brown and blues great Memphis Gold. In the 90's "P"-Nut toured Europe with the blues legend Memphis Gold. After years of playing on stage he decided to go get his music degree and attended the Music Tech College of Music, now called McNalley Smith, in Minneapolis MN. After graduation he stayed in Minnesota for 10 years where was very active in the music scene and where he taught many aspiring musicians. He played with the blues group The HooDoo Kings , the 12 piece group Arayastone , the reggae mainstay Dred I Dred , the funk band Down with Gravity , jazz guitarist John Penny , and a host of others. When you hear him play you get hints of the his influences like Bootsy, Jimi Hendrix, Parliament and Larry Graham to name a few. "P"-Nut is a consummate bass player and works at his craft continuously. In 2007 he attended Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey's Bass at the Beach and later that year he also attended Victor Wooten's Bass Nature Camp. He learned many things at these camps and has integrated them into his playing and teaching. Tired of the cold of Minnesota and homesick for the sights and sounds of D.C. "P"-nut moved back in the area in 2011. He has played with a number of groups since being back and is happy to be a part of the School Of Rock family.

Meloney Burns was born and raised in NYC where she began her formal education in music. From elementary through high school, she was involved in and was hand-picked for all programs involving music. She was frequently chosen for lead vocal roles and for dance programs.
Raised in the world of religion and heavily involved in the church, for many years she was lead choir director, section lead, and trainer for the children's choirs. Singing in the church gave her a strong knowledge of, and ability to use and project her voice in many ways. It also gave her the opportunity to hear how to harmonize well and blend with others when needed.
At an early age, Meloney began touring and providing background vocals for her mom who was a gospel recording artist during the 70's and 80's. Studio sessions and traveling around the country with music productions were also part of her music experience. She has had the opportunity to work with gospel greats such as The Clark Sisters, Donny McClurkin, and the legendary Shirley Ceasar. She performed with several orchestras, including that of Duke Ellington, conducted by his son Mercer Ellington; and with the Divided We Fall Orchestra. New York City’s Carnegie Hall was one of the biggest stages Meloney performed on, early in her career. She then went on to work with different popular acts and was part of a female group where she emerged as vocal coach. This did for other groups also involved with the production company that she was part of at the time.
She then entered the world of club date and wedding bands which she did for nearly 20 years. During those years, she began doing back up sessions and shows for various well-known artists. Working through studios such as Sony, NYC, she has toured with artists Mariah Carey, Jessica Simpson, Monica, Don Henley (The Eagles), INXS, Carlos Santana, One Republic, Vinyl Station, Rob Thomas, Plain White T's, Counting Crows, Charles Kelley, Jason Mraz, and countless others.
Meloney currently gives vocal instruction, which she has been doing for nearly 12 years. Her styles of teaching include, Jazz, pop, R&B, and gospel, etc. It is always her endeavor to share her love for music with her students.

Raised in Bethesda, Austin Loman began teaching himself the guitar in middle school, while he was also learning classical upright bass. He quickly learned that he would progress faster if he had the right teacher and so very much appreciates the role of the teacher in any student's skill growth. In the years to come, guitar became a serious passion and would lead to exciting musical opportunities like opening for progressive rock band ‘Animals as Leaders’. Later on he branched out into jazz, playing with his peers at local events and clubs. Austin attended the University of Maryland, College Park, and his previous connections earned him the chance to join established local rock band ‘Body Thief’ and record on their debut album. The two years spent in this band gave him the chance to explore another style and play an assortment of different venues in Baltimore, Washington, Virginia, and Philadelphia.

Between Austin’s performing experience, teaching experience, and solid background in music theory and songwriting, School of Rock seemed like the perfect fit, and Austin can now be found helping guitarists find their way around the instrument and grasp the material they’ve been assigned.

Sean Nix grew up in the metropolitan area of Washington D.C. and began playing music as a elementary school student. Starting with trumpet, he quickly developed a fascination with the piano. He spent his grade school years immersed in music through State Solo & Ensemble festivals, jazz ensembles, school band, marching band and jamming with friends. At the end of his senior year, Sean won the John Philip Sousa Award, recognizing superior musicianship, dependability, loyalty, and cooperation.

After finishing high school, he moved to Boston to study music at Berklee College of Music earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Film Scoring (Music Composition). He continued his training in piano performance with Bob Winter, pianist for the Boston Pops Orchestra under John Williams and Keith Lockhart. Sean also studied under renowned jazz pianist, composer and recording artist Ray Santisi. During his time in Boston, Sean enjoyed working on many projects, from composing for production houses and documentaries to performing in many local jazz, classical and contemporary music ensembles. He also developed a passion for teaching.

As a teacher with the Community Music Center of Boston, Sean worked with principals and music therapists in the Boston Public School System to develop and teach music curriculum to students with special needs. He moved back to the Washington D.C. area in 2001 and shortly afterwards managed the eSharp music program as part of Berklee College’s City Music network. This program not only gave young artists the opportunity to study music and be part of a supportive arts community, but also helped them to expand their worldview and instilled in them a lifelong love of music and art. In addition, a few students won full scholarships to Berklee College of Music.

Sean continues his love for music much the same way he started. He is the piano accompanist for his youngest son’s violin State Solo & Ensemble Festival events. With the band Prime Time, Sean performs jazz and contemporary music in the D.C. area having enjoyed play for inaugurations, weddings and major fundraising events. He is also a music production tech geek, tinkering with software, gadgets and audio equipment to compose and record his music productions.

As an educator, Sean strives to instill a lifelong love of music in his students through patience, perseverance, exploration, and fun. Understanding music theory and technique are just the scaffolding to molding creative, confident and outstanding individuals of any age.
