About School of Rock San Jose

Welcome to School of Rock San Jose—a haven for aspiring musicians who love rock n’ roll. We believe live performance is the most fun and effective way to teach an instrument, which is why we get kids playing on stage as quickly as possible. Our classes are tailored to all age groups and levels of proficiency, and instructors are passionate about creating a legacy of music by helping students succeed in music and beyond.

We also believe that music is more than a solo act. That’s why School of Rock San Jose teaches kids to play alone and as part of a team. This approach promotes accountability, speeds up the learning process, and fosters an inclusive community of rockers in San Jose. Students are not only learning an instrument—they’re making friends, building confidence, and becoming better people.

Remix! Think of the best cover versions of your favorite songs. This season we took songs from one genre and reimagined them in another. What would happen if Imagine Dragons covered Bruno Mars or if Weezer covered Lady Gaga? Country songs may turn punk, metal songs can become pop, rap songs can be played like a ska tune. The students did an amazing job putting their stamp on this show!

Alex is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and performer from San Jose, CA.  He was introduced to music at an early age and has thus found his passion in life.  In high school, Alex was part of the Symphonic, Concert, and Steel Drum ensembles where he learned the importance of being a well-rounded musician as well as playing with others.  With this program, he was able to play in various venues such as Disneyland and the Sydney Opera House in Australia.  He attended the University of Oregon, where he studied music as well as branching off and playing his own music in bands.  In the Bay Area, Alex plays in Love District, Kandur, and other projects.  He does his best to share his passion and enthusiasm for music with all of his students.   At the school, he finds the most reward in inspiring his students to play, and to individually find their own voice in the music.    You will never see him happier other than when he is playing or teaching!

Brian grew up in small agricultural town Hollister CA and studied Jazz at San Jose State, but this headbanger-at -heart has finally found himself at home at School of Rock!
Brian's love of the guitar began very young when he would sneak a peek at the beautiful 60's era Fender Jazzmaster that belonged to his dad. In high school, his passion ignited when his first guitar teacher introduced him to such artists as Steve Vai and Ozzy. From then on he had guitar on the brain day and night, and by his senior year, if anyone at school was looking for "that guy that's really good at guitar," they'd be directed to Brian.
If San Jose State had a degree in virtuoso-rock-guitar, that's what he'd have gone for, but he had to settle for Jazz instead. After school he chose to pursue the family life rather than rock stardom, and plays stay-at-home dad to his two wonderful kids. Even so, he's been rocking ever since, and discovered a passion for teaching in the process. Whether he's collaborating with songwriters, performing, or showing somebody how to play a new lick on the guitar, he always finds some way to get his shred on.
His life path has finally led to a school as enamored with rock as he is, and he couldn't be happier than to share this love with the rock-gods of tomorrow!

Carl brings along 40+ years of musical experience. He was the founding member of legendary Nardcore punk band Ill Repute, featured in their own documentary and book ("Clean Cut American Kids - the Story of Ill Repute). Through the years, he worked alongside famed pop/punk record producer Jerry Finn (Green Day, Blink 182, Rancid). Ill Repute has influenced many punk artists over the years, and in 2014, they were presented a proclamation by the City Council of their hometown of Port Hueneme for their "musical contributions and innovation". This led to their induction to the Ventura County Music Awards Hall of Fame.

Carl's drum experience also expands to other genres including orchestral, community concert bands, Dixieland swing, and as a Scottish bagpipe side drummer. He is currently a member of the Stewart Tartan Pipes and Drums, an award winning competitive Scottish bagpipe and drum group based out of Saratoga, CA.

Carl also has years of experience performing on other instruments including clarinet, saxophone, mandolin, and guitar.

Carl's leadership skills outside of music are also noteworthy. He has been a high school baseball coach and Little League Board Director, a Board Director for his hometown church, selected "Supervisor for the Year" from a former employer, and Executive Board President of a large professional organization. He currently works full time as a public works manager for one of the largest public agencies in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Jonathan is a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter originally from Colorado living in the bay area. His main instruments are guitar and vocals, but he also plays and teaches bass and keys as well. His style and musical genres vary with an eclectic mix from folk and blues, to pop and contemporary, all the way to pop punk and alternative music. All though Jonathan currently resides in San Jose, his music and pursuit of music has taken him all over the United states and globally, most recently to Australia where he studied song writing/music composition and recording at Hillsong International Leadership College. Jonathan’s musical journey has been a winding road consisting of all types of performances including playing in bands, acting in church musicals and productions, writing and recording albums for churches, writing and recording self released albums and EPs, and of course singing at a few coffee shops along the way. Currently Jonathan is enjoying writing new material, gigging around, and teaching music to the next generation. Jonathan believes in equipping the next generation with a sound and talent that is new and refreshing and will honor the history and music we have come from. No matter the student, no matter the instrument, the best is yet to come in music and we get the great opportunity to steward it and be a part of that!
