About School of Rock San Diego

Welcome to School of Rock San Diego—a haven for aspiring musicians who love rock n’ roll. We believe live performance is the most fun and effective way to teach an instrument, which is why we get kids playing on stage as quickly as possible. Our classes are tailored to all age groups and levels of proficiency, and instructors are passionate about creating a legacy of music by helping students succeed in music and beyond.

We also believe that music is more than a solo act. That’s why School of Rock San Diego teaches kids to play alone and as part of a team. This approach promotes accountability, speeds up the learning process, and fosters an inclusive community of rockers in San Diego. Students are not only learning an instrument—they’re making friends, building confidence, and becoming better people.

Matt has played drums with several loud, fast, rock bands such as The Bloody Hollies and seminal punk band The Dwarves. Touring the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan several times over and recording three full-length LP’s with the Bloody Hollies (Alive Records), two of which won a San Diego Music Award, Matt gained notoriety in the San Diego Music scene as a hard-hitting rock drummer. However, he has also studied under jazz and Latin-music greats such as Al Vasquez, Tim Shea, and Duncan Moore, and has played with various groups such as Tourism, The Stitch Up, Gray Ghosts, and ska legend Dan Potthast. His current project, Bit Maps, showcases a variety of musical styles and well as electronic elements.
An extremely versatile musician, he also has much studio experience: He, along with two band-mates, was contracted to compose instrumentals for Fox Television’s Fuel TV for a period of three years, along with other TV and film programs. His recordings can be heard on television and film, and recently was contracted to record a track for Dave Davies of The Kinks for a solo record.
Matt also manages a music venue in town, has worked for music supervision company Triple Nine Music, and volunteers at the Braille Institute of San Diego by teaching a music class to visually impaired children. He still studies under Duncan Moore, loves learning new styles of drumming, loves teaching, and loves being involved in the music scene.
