When Jimmi Kane started bouncing on his rocking horse right on beat to Michael Jackson’s “Beat It," his dad thought quickly and put some drum sticks in the 4 year-old’s hands. Without any formal training, Jimmi quickly taught himself to master the drums. By the time he was 15 years old, he was a regular on stage in and around his hometown of Saugerties, NY.

Jimmi's career as a professional drummer has allowed him to record and tour the country with artists such as Krista (RCA/Jive Records), Thieves and Villains (Victory Records) and The Morning Of (Tragic Hero Records). He currently leads the East Coast Cast of the award-winning, punk rock drum troupe, Street Drum Corps, where you can catch him banging on oil drums and pounding on kegs in the electrifying spectacular, "Blood Drums," every weekend in September and October at Dorney Park's "The Haunt" and PNC Bank Arts Center's brand new Halloween event, "Scared in New Jersey."

Suzanne's love of music began as soon as she was old enough to speak. After listening to the Original Broadway Cast Recording of "Annie" on repeat for what seemed like years, her mother decided it was time to to take the 5 year-old to a vocal instructor. Suzanne's show tune repertoire soon evolved beyond "Tomorrow" and, eventually, she began singing and acting in local stage productions, such as "Gypsy" and "The Music Man." Then, one fateful seventh grade day, Suzanne discovered KISS. At that moment, rock and roll seeped into her bloodstream and there was no turning back.

After graduating from Syracuse University, Suzanne worked in all facets of the music industry, from radio to publicity to concert booking, before taking time off to start a family. Now, ready to get back into the world of rock and roll, Suzanne, along with her husband, Jimmi, jumped into a business that will give them the satisfaction of teaching new generations to love and appreciate music.

With years of experience, Rod uses his expertise to inspire students of all ages and skill levels. He has taught guitar and bass students of all ages to play music ranging from Rush to Joan Jett to Dream Theater. He is a serious asset to our School of Rock team and we asked him a few questions to find out how he got to be so awesome!

How old were you when you started playing?
I started playing at a very young age. I think I was born playing the guitar lol.
My parents were both musicians. My Dad was a classical-folk guitarist
and my Mom a Soprano vocalist. I remember when I was a kid watching my
Dad perform every weekend with his brother and cousins; that impacted
me greatly. I wanted to be like my Dad and Uncle. I started singing before
getting into guitar though. I used to sing with my parents at parties when I was 4
years old. It was a couple years later when I started to listen to my Dad’s music
(Paco De Lucia, Los Panchos, Andre Segovia) that I got even more
interested in guitar. So, to answer the question, I was 6 years old when I got
      into playing guitar. : )

What do you love most about teaching?
I love to see the progress of the student. Seeing them playing songs and
doing scales on their own is awesome. I love it when a student is passionate
about guitar, it reminds me of when I was young. Also, believe it or not, I do
like learning from my students. Yes, I am a teacher but I’m constantly
learning. Sometimes a little thing a student does grabs you and teaches you
something. I know some of my peers will agree with me on this!

What is your favorite genre of music?
I have to say two: Flamenco and good old 70s-80’s Hard Rock / Metal. Yes,
      loud guitars, big hair, make-up, smoke, leather, spandex !!! \ W /

Who is your favorite musical artist/group?
Paco de Lucia, Struntz & Farah, Rainbow, Deep Purple, Dokken, Michael
Schenker, Heart, Dio, Foreigner, Whitesnake, Dream Theater…

What is your favorite song of all time?
That’s an extremely hard question. Wow! Maybe something that was
written and recorded by Ritchie Blackmore & Ronnie James Dio?!

What would be your dream SoR show?
I might get hatted by the music director for this but, I would love to see an
all original show by our students. I think it would be a great way for some
students to break out of their shell. I know we have some amazing talent in
      our school.

What is your best advice for a student?
Practice, Practice, Practice! ...and be yourself. Eddie Van Halen & Slash,
can only be Eddie Van Halen & Slash. We all have our musical heroes that
we appreciate and love and that’s OK but don’t be a copycat. Rather, use
your heroes as influence to find your own sound and style. I also hear a lot of
young players wanting to play fast or be the fastest. Fast doesn’t mean
better! A beautiful melody that has a few notes, that’s composed from the
heart, speaks louder than playing a ton of notes with no meaning just to
      show off.

What are your hobbies aside from music?
I love going to the beach. For me there’s nothing like sun, sand and water
…especially the turquoise waters of the Caribbean.

What do you love about working at SoR?
There’s always Rock & Roll going on. I love that!

What is the coolest gig you ever played?
I have been performing live professionally since I was 14 so there’s been
many cool “gigs”. I have been blessed to have performed all over in many
different countries, states, cities, and towns. But, I have to say that one of the most
memorable “gigs”/ shows that I have played has to be from Puerto Rico,
October 2001. I have a couple of reasons for why. One, it was a show in
memory of all the victims of 9-11. Secondly, it was the last show my Dad saw
me perform live before he passed away. That show will always have a
special place in my heart. : )

  • “It is hard to articulate the pride you feel as a parent when you see your kid perform on-stage. As a music teacher for fifteen years, it is easy to say that choosing the School of Rock Randolph for our fifteen year-old son, was indeed, the best parenting decision we have made yet. ”

  • “When we decided to send our daughter to SOR, we never imagined what a positive impact that one decision would have on her life. She transformed from a shy, quiet kid, to a confident incredible musician, with an active social life and many close friends she considers her second family. The amazing memories she’ll always have of touring and performing with the All-Stars at world-renowned venues and festivals are just icing on the cake. ”

  • “School of Rock has been a great community for these kids. It is an alternative to extracurricular activities that a lot of these kids can really fit into where they might feel out of place in other arenas. ”
