  • School of Rock Orangeburg's Performance Program is all about translating our students' abilities to play in the lesson room to performing for real on stage. Students learn, absorb, and perform iconic hits from some of history's greatest rock and roll performers including The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Van Halen, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and many more. • Fun, music, and education wrapped into one all-inclusive experience!

  • Our Rock 101 Program at School of Rock Orangeburg is focused on making the first steps of a young student’s journey both fun and successful. The days of mundane music instruction are over. At School of Rock Orangeburg, we believe that playing music together is the only real path to mastering an instrument and developing a true love for music.

In Rock 101, we focus our instruction on the one instrument that students have chosen to study. Whether we’re teaching scales, chords, notes, or time signatures, we put concepts in context so students understand how the principles they learn are applied to real music. Using some of the world’s most famous songs and infusing fun into every chord, Rock 101 allows Orangeburg students to enhance their skills and move on to our Performance Program.

School of Rock Orangeburg’s Rock 101 students can expect:

    • Weekly private music lessons on guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, and/or vocals
    • Weekly group rehearsals to reinforce basic concepts and skills in a band setting
    • A firm grasp of the fundamentals of technique and music theory
    • An understanding of what it means to play solo and in a group
    • Real knowledge gained through real fun!

Each summer, our AllStars embark on an authentic concert tour to perform in jaw-dropping live shows across the country, including Red Rocks, Lollapalooza, Hangout Music Fest, NAMM, Gathering of the Vibes, and countless others. AllStars also get to share the stage with experienced, larger-than-life performers like Alice Cooper, Eddie Vedder, and Slash, to name a few. There is no better way for a star on the rise to get a taste for what professional music is really like.

  • At School of Rock Orangeburg, we know how to bring the world of music, and the fun that comes with it, to adults. We get our students playing and learning at rapid-fire speeds through real performances of their favorite songs, instead of your old traditional music instruction programs with piles of sheet music and hours of rote memorization. At School of Rock Orangeburg, the stage can be yours at any age.

Our adult students learn the fundamentals of music, including scales, chords, notes, progressions, and more, from real-world instruction through some of the most iconic songs and sounds in music history. Whatever your musical taste may be, our instructors know how to create a program just for you. Whether you’re seeking basic proficiency, a standing gig as the resident guitar player at parties, or future rock star status, School of Rock Orangeburg works with you to help you reach your goals.

    • A firm grasp of music theory and technique fundamentals, taught through your favorite music genre
    • Fun, instruction, and great progression of practical skills wrapped all into one!

  • School of Rock Orangeburg’s Rookies Program offers a gateway to understanding music for first and second graders. Using proprietary set-ups for guitar, bass, drums and keyboard, as well as other tools, we introduce our Rookies to music fundamentals in a fun way. The skills and passion for music that our Rookies learn prepare them for Rock 101 and a lifelong love of music.

With exercises, tools and games customized to their age group, our Orangeburg Rookies learn the concepts of music theory, rhythm, pitch, form and dynamics as they play alongside their friends. We encourage our students to explore various instruments and play styles so they begin to understand how individual contributions form a band; even the best solo keyboard players or vocalists need to understand how an ensemble works.

All students in Orangeburg’s Rookies Program can expect:

    • Weekly group lessons using guitar, bass, keyboard and drums
    • Exposure to essential fundamentals like music theory, pitch and rhythm
    • A focus on teamwork and collaboration
    • An understanding of what it means to play solo and in a group
    • Fun combined with practical learning!

Just like our standard programs, our camps offer a high-energy experience that is fun, creative and team-oriented. Our students learn music by playing it with their peers, guided by experienced instructors from the music community.

Founding member and lead guitarist of the band Cohed and Cambria, Travis Stever, has had some downtime between putting out killer metal albums and touring the world. This season, he happened to make himself available to us to drop some serious knowledge, trade licks, tell stories and share experiences and overall help the Orangeburg SOR be better at what we do best- teach our kids how to become next level musicians.

Travis has been in and out of the rehearsal and lesson room so much this season, we had a great idea: Let's let Travis run a show! Of course, we are making it even harder for him - we are giving Travis all of a month to get our performers and some of Travis's guitar students into shape. We'll show you what Travis' dedication powered with SOR students can do - come check it out live at the Whiskey Kitchen December 17th! Tickets are $10 in advance $15 day of show. Send any ticket requests to orangeburg@schoolofrock.com. This event WILL sell out so don't wait!

Rich found the love of drums during 5th grade when the middle school band performed at his elementary school to recruit students for the band next year. The only instrument that Rich was drawn to was the drums. The band director warned the student body not to apply for drums because it was a very popular instrument and being there was only 2 positions available it was unlikely that the applicant would be accepted. Everyone was asked to choose two instruments, Rich only wrote the drums. Of course, many people chose the drums and an aptitude test was performed, Rich was accepted into the program. It’s been love ever since. In the eighth grade Rich and some classmates started a cover/original rock band and by ninth grade they had been awarded best up and coming youth band at the New York State Fair performing in front of audiences of 3,000 people. Following suit Rich only applied to one college, Berklee College of Music and was accepted to the percussion performance program. Rich studied at Berklee took time to tour with various acts and study privately, finally completed his 4 years at Berklee in 1987. Rich has also studied privately with some great teachers including Gary Chester (New Breed) , Butch Miles (Count Basie) , Skip Hadden (Weather Report) and Joe Hunt (The Stan Getz Quartet ). Rich has been teaching drums for over 35 years and continues to play live, record in the studio and teach, loving every minute of it.

  • “The School of Rock program has and continues to give my son a platform to shine. It provides a safe and fun outlet for expression, and a life long influence that will positively impact his future. As parents, we are grateful for the opportunity the School of Rock has afforded our son and to see him perform is truly a proud experience. School of Rock Orangeburg NY ”

  • “All of the staff (owner, directors, instructors, reception) are team players who are kind, friendly, flexible, great communicators and efficient. My children have a blast while learning and performing great music. The performance groups have the right formula: one individual lesson per week accompanied by one rehearsal with their band mates per week which encourages practice, carry over, team work, responsibility and fun. The camps are amazing also. The set the students play in just one week's time is nothing short of impressive! My children say they really enjoy it and have fun!”
    - Annie P
  • “My 9 year old daughter has been in the school of Rock for about 2+ years. She had been taking 1-on-1 classes elsewhere. She had learned to play a couple basic songs. When I read about School of Rock I decided to give it a try. I was skeptical at first. Instead of learning to play songs as she had been doing before, she was practicing chords, and parts of songs, scales and so on. Then she performed at Nyack Farmers Market. She played guitar one song, bass one song, and sang one song. For me it was like being back stage for a U2 concert. Nothing can describe seeing your kid perform in a band. That was after less than a year with School of Rock. A year later, I get it. Now she is truly a musician. Not someone who can play a song or two, but a musician. One of those mysterious people who just understands music. She is rehearsing for a concert at the Pearl River Brew House. More complicated parts, more singing. Yes I am excited about that, and my wife and I are amazed at the sounds she can coax out of her guitar. The understanding of music that has evidently become ingrained in her. There are the other ineffable benefits as well, such as confidence and work ethic - I no longer have to force her to practice, because as a part of a band, she WANTS to be good. And she has finally grasped the concept that she actually can get good at anything she sets her mind to, as long as she works hard at it. Yep, worth every penny. As a final note, from what I have seen, Shuman and his staff are amazing with the kids.”

  • “The School of Rock experience is unlike anything I have ever experienced. Top notch teachers and staff, and the talent and passion of young minds combine to allow students to experience what it is like to be in a rock band. They perform at live venues with real audiences and are challenged to be the best that they can be. Only wish they had had one around when I was a teenager!”
