Henry started his musical career when he was about nine years old, after hearing Beatles songs on the radio and then really became hooked on Feb. 9, 1964 (at the age of 10) when he saw the Beatles live on TV and expressed an interest in playing guitar. His Dad bought him an electric guitar but no amp so his career really began just by listening to the music and then trying to play the song later. In 1967, he learned his first guitar solo (without an amp) after being blown away by Cream's Sunshine of Your Love. Not realizing what he was doing, he traded his good electric Gibson Kalamazoo for a cheap acoustic/electric guitar and was happy for a couple of hours until he found out the new addition was not very good. Henry started lessons at the age of 12 and that's when he really got into the guitar, music and the whole 60's 70's music scene. He played with friends from school and his brother (who played drums) then later bought an acoustic guitar and started expanding by playing folk-based music. That's where he learned to play along with original recordings, which forced him to learn to play accurately. This was a technique he enjoyed until he passed away suddenly on Feb 23, 2017. He always played guitar in bands doing specific gigs, parties and projects and also enjoyed playing drums and bass. In 1995, when his kids were about 10 12, he taught them guitar, drums and bass. At that time he somehow starting teaching their friends and once word got out he ended up having several students. Henry enjoyed performing and jamming with friends and continued to play guitar, drums and bass whenever an opportunity came up. He was very excited about the School of Rock opportunity as it combined his business experience along with his music teaching and playing passion involving kids and adults. He will be forever remembered and sadly missed by the many people whose lives he touched for 62 years.

Graham got into music at a young age, starting piano lessons at age 6. His parents found him playing with a baby grand at a friend's party and couldn't tear him away from it! He continued with lessons for 6 years but his interest in piano waned when he was 12 and he turned to guitar instead. Graham took lessons for a short time then proceeded to teach himself, learning songs mostly by ear after endless frustration with incorrect online tabs. At age 16 he dedicated himself to practicing an hour a day and began to advance much quicker in his abilities. Around the same time, he began focusing on learning Metal songs, whereas previously he had been devoted to playing the Blues. This broke his habit of playing the same style continually and greatly broadened his perspective of different genres. Around that time, he also started writing his own progressions and riffs and recorded them onto his computer. As a shy and introverted teenager, Graham never imagined that he'd be performing in front of other people. He had only played for a couple friends in private settings or by himself, but knew he had to break away from this trend and conquer his stage fright so he could share the music he was making with other people. Graham attended the Toronto Film School and completed his certificate in Recording Arts Technology, getting lots of hands on experience recording himself and others in professional studio settings. While there, his interest in keyboards was rekindled and he began playing regularly again. After graduating, he formed his first band 'Santo Me Gusto,' taking the role of lead/rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist, and playing covers at local parties. He lost his stage fright and became hooked on performing, and when his band disbanded he knew he had to continue. He formed a Metal band with high school friends named 'Drakefield' where he plays rhythm and lead guitar, and also auditioned for and joined other bands including Ransom Note and now Mayfly’s Landing where he is on rhythm and lead guitar, as well as vocals. Graham is very passionate about teaching at School of Rock and enjoys sharing his passion for music and performance with all his students! He is very grateful and fortunate for the opportunity to advance the abilities of young musicians in such an incredible environment, and hopes to advance himself as a musician in the process.

Shauna has always loved to sing. She started taking classical piano lessons at the age of 8 and vocal lessons at the age of 10. She discovered her passion for performing when she was cast as the lead role in her school musical. Over the years Shauna has performed in many theatre productions, concerts, and various vocal ensembles. She attended Unionville High School and graduated the Arts York Program for Vocal Performance. In addition to the daily music classes, this program provided her with the opportunity to perform in local venues, such as Roy Thompson Hall, as well as venues around the world, including the Great Wall of China. She accomplished Grade 8 Voice, Grade 6 Piano Grade 2 Music Theory with the Royal Conservatory of Music. While studying Kinesiology at Western University she continued to keep music as a hobby. She continued on to complete her Bachelor of Education at Western. Teaching at the School of Rock is a unique experience for Shauna to combine her passion for music and performing with her teaching background.

Raquel is a classically trained pianist and vocalist with a vast range of experience from choral music to musical theatre to solo art. Her musical interests and performances have just as much scope in genre from Country/Western, Rock, Pop, R&B, Motown, Funk and everywhere in between and has had the great fortune of working with incredible and renowned artists, composers and musicians through her endeavours.
Having started singing before she could speak and taking piano lessons at the age of 3, Raquel has never been able to turn down a stage - her favourite being the Toronto Centre for the Arts where she has repeatedly performed as a soloist, ensemble member and mass choir member with the Bach Children's Chorus and Bach Chamber Youth Choir known most popularly for their recording and performing of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Theme song 'I Believe' with Nikki Yanofsky.
Raquel is currently exploring, testing and pushing her artistic and musical boundaries through pursuing her own music while studying jazz at Humber College and is a firm believer that knowledge gained is only as useful as much as it is shared.

Born and raised in Richmond Hill, Ontario - Jesse developed an early interest in music by scouring through his parents record collection. Initially inspired by bands like AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Black Sabbath and Rush, he decided to start studying both drums and guitar.

Lawrie has been playing piano since he was about 4 years old and guitar since the age of 14.
He plays keyboards, guitar, bass and sings professionally in several bands but his main band is The Elton Rohn Band, one of the premier Elton John tributes in North America, playing festivals and theatres across Canada and the U.S.
Lawrie has also played piano in Bruce Springsteen and Beatles tribute bands as well as several Southern and classic rock bands and recently began fronting a new duo called the Soul Maitre D’s, mostly playing original material.
Songwriting is a passion, as is guitar and keyboard playing.

Mostly self taught, Lawrie did take traditional piano lessons as a kid and played in many high school bands. He did however play with an international band of dentists before getting side-tracked in his university years.

Lawrie believes you have to do what you love and love what you do. Making music
fun and enjoyable encourages you to grow, improve and do better and he feels he has learned a lot from playing with other wonderful musicians over the years, in many styles and genres including wedding and party bands to occasional jazz and blues and even some prog rock and classical.

Lawrie looks forward to helping other musicians along their journey at School of Rock Markham.

Music and sound perception is the second most dominant cognitive brain activity compared to the other senses. It is a very close second to sight. What we hear has incredible impact on how we perceive the things around us and on how we feel. A well-crafted sound design can manipulate the observers feelings deeply. Think of the last movie you saw that moved you or a commercial that impacts you greatly. What about a song that you listen to again and again because it means so much to you? The sound has so much to do with it that if it was done poorly, it wouldn’t have the impact the creator intended. Elliott has been working with sound and music as a music producer (16 years), sound designer (15 years), sound engineer (26 years) musician (40 years) and for the last 10 years as an educator teaching the finer details of what sound is and how to manipulate it in order to get the desired effect intended.

Out of the incredible experiences Elliott has gathered through his years of dedication to music production and sound design he brings his knowledge to the classroom with the same enthusiasm he has when crafting and recording the music. With his deep understanding of sound, acoustics and technology he weaves the information together smoothly and seamlessly inspiring students in the same way he’s been inspired for years and years to come.

Michelle has had a love for music ever since she was a baby. From what her mother recalls, she would sing lovely songs for her every morning even before she learned how to talk. Continuing her love of music, 6 year-old Michelle would beg her older cousin, who was 6 years older and taking piano lessons at the time, to teach her the simple things that she had learned. Fast-forward to when Michelle was 8 years old, she started taking official piano lessons from The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM). After completing Grade 9 piano with RCM, Michelle went on a hiatus with her piano lessons. She now enjoys practicing on her own and just plays the piano for fun. Michelle came to know about School of Rock when she decided to start taking guitar lessons to further her knowledge with different instruments. She is continuing her guitar lessons while studying Early Childhood Education at Seneca College. Michelle strongly believes in play-based learning where children learn and have fun at the same time. Her personal philosophy is to encourage children and to observe children’s interests and plan interesting activities to further their developmental knowledge.

Calvin has been fully captivated by music since the age of 3. At age 6, Calvin began taking lessons in both piano & drums, and eventually reached Grade 9 honours in piano from the Royal Conservatory of Music. But it was at the age of 8 that he discovered his love for guitar. The guitar soon became Calvin’s passion. He performed for the first time at the age of 9, singing and playing guitar. From that moment, Calvin always felt like the stage was his home and has continued to entertain audiences internationally. And then, Calvin found the School of Rock Markham! As one of the 5 original students to take part in the school’s very first performance, at a small karaoke event, Calvin has been with the school since the very beginning. As one of the school’s longest-tenured House Band members ever, Calvin knows first-hand exactly all of the wonderful things School of Rock has to offer.

During his time in the House Band, Calvin had the opportunity to play at some amazing venues including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Lincoln Hall in Chicago, Summerfest in Milwaukee, J.C. Dobbs in Philadelphia, The Pier That Rocks in Wildwood, and he was part of a 1-week residency at the Hard Rock Resort in Punta Cana. Calvin also had the amazing opportunity to become a leader in the school's House Band, and oversaw musical arrangements, vocal harmonies, and all sorts of other tasks involved with the group's musical output.

Calvin has been working at the school for over a year and has thoroughly enjoyed his experience there. If you see Calvin at the school’s front desk, say hi! Calvin is thoroughly committed to making sure that every client’s experience at School of Rock is a great one!

Music has been a part of Jesse’s life for as long as anyone can remember. Enamoured by the drums as early as age 3, Jesse quickly went down a path full of music. He started piano when he was 6 years old, eventually achieving Grade 9 Piano at the Royal Conservatory of Music. A little while after starting piano, Jesse finally took up drums, the instrument that had captivated him as a young child. Never looking back, Jesse has now played drums for over a decade.

Jesse started at School of Rock Markham as a student, and became a founding member of the school's House Band shortly after he joined. He was the House Band's drummer for 4 years. In addition, he has taken part in 3 tours across North America, and has played a residency at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana. Jesse continues to hone his drumming skills and technique to this day, and is always in search of another challenge. Jesse is excited to be working at School of Rock Markham, and is thrilled to have the chance to bring the spirit of music that fascinated him at a young age to the next generation.

  • “The performance program is a great way for kids to learn and have fun performing for a live audience! The instructors are very supportive and encouraging! ”

  • “This is a super night out and unless something urgent comes up I will NOT miss these sessions every Tuesday night. Great setup in Markham to plug in and play. Good people working for SoR and participants making some great new friends! Flexibility to play anything, so I'm learning material I've never heard before to stuff I love and know well. I've experience an excellent balance of jamming and structure for practicing tunes to lead up to an event. Rehearsing to lead up to a performance is effective and rewarding. Markham has an advanced room for experienced players and another room for those who haven't played as much. Both bands played last night at a local pub and everyone had a terrific time with plenty of friends and relatives there to enjoy. It is clear that playing has improved by many since joining SoR.”
    J. Bolger, Markham, Ont - Adult Grad School Program
  • “I love the amazing quality of the teachers, the facilities are great, the combination of the individual lesson and band provides an incredible experience not only with music but also with the community. My son loves his drums and I believe that this gives him confidence that is reflected in other parts of his life.”
    M. Papa, Markham, Ont - Son is in Performance Program
  • “Welcoming, down-to-earth, yet dynamic atmosphere... excellent teachers who are not only fabulous musicians in their own right, but, know how to motivate and work with kids. We switched music schools after we felt our kids had a strong, initial, foundation - they weren't feeling inspired to continue with their music lessons. At School of Rock they have progressed leaps and bounds in a few short months. ”
