About School of Rock Port Jefferson

Welcome to School of Rock Port Jefferson—a haven for aspiring musicians who love rock n’ roll. We believe live performance is the most fun and effective way to teach an instrument, which is why we get kids playing on stage as quickly as possible. Our classes are tailored to all age groups and levels of proficiency, and instructors are passionate about creating a legacy of music by helping students succeed in music and beyond.

We also believe that music is more than a solo act. That’s why School of Rock Port Jefferson teaches kids to play alone and as part of a team. This approach promotes accountability, speeds up the learning process, and fosters an inclusive community of rockers in Port Jefferson. Students are not only learning an instrument—they’re making friends, building confidence, and becoming better people.

The skills and passion for music that our Rookies learn prepare them for Rock 101 and a lifelong love of music.

With exercises, tools and games customized to their age group, our Port Jefferson Rookies learn the concepts of music theory, rhythm, pitch, form and dynamics as they play alongside their friends. We encourage our students to explore various instruments and play styles so they begin to understand how individual contributions form a band; even the best solo keyboard players or vocalists need to understand how an ensemble works.

Patrick's love affair with music began at the age of 9 when he picked up his first guitar. From there, he fed himself a steady diet of music from rock's greatest guitar gods, and cut his teeth playing in various bands in the Long Island area. Patrick began studying at Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music in 2005. There, he not only honed his craft and became one of Berklee's preeminent rock guitarists, but began studying composition and production in all styles of music. Patrick was selected to perform at Berklee's Guitar Night Rock/Pop Showcase in 2009. That same year, he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a dual major in Guitar Performance and Contemporary Writing Production. Patrick has since been making a name for himself in the New York rock scene, playing with Long Island alternative band Finespun and most recently playing with New York City's own Bazaar Royale. Patrick has shared the stage with such legendary performers as Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen, and played multiple showcases at both the Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg, PA and South By Southwest (SXSW), America's largest music conference. When not performing, Patrick has been working as a freelance composer in New York City, writing music for various major ad campaigns (Subway, Weis Supermarkets, Merck, etc.), as well as contributing videos for the upstart tablature website United We Tab.

At the age of 12, Peter was determined to learn how to play guitar in hope of starting a band with his friends. This was just the beginning of his musical journey. From there, he threw himself into anything that would offer him the opportunity to play music. As a teenager, he played in many rock bands and studied audio engineering. Being heavily influenced by guitarist Steve Howe from the 1970's progressive rock group YES, Peter became inspired to pursue jazz and classical guitar on top of his rock background. While attending Suffolk County Community College, Peter played guitar in Indie-Rock bands Mystic Flavor and The Woolgathering. After receiving his Associates Degree in music he continued his education at Purchase College where he studied classical guitar under the leadership of world-renowned guitarist, Frederick Hand. Today, Peter is still performing his music as a singer-songwriter around New York as well as playing gigs with musical pit bands, jazz artists, and other local songwriters. As a teacher, Peter encourages his students to have fun, play with other aspiring musicians, and to participate in anything that will further their musical abilities. Peter is currently enrolled as a graduate student at Purchase College where he plans to continue pursuing a master's degree in classical guitar beginning in the Fall of 2012.

Keenan’s passion and commitment to music is what makes him one of the most sought-after players, teacher and musician. He began playing in his school orchestra on viola but fell in love with playing the bass at the age of seventeen. It was then that he knew he wanted to dedicate his life to music. Immediately after high school, he enrolled at Suffolk Community College and has now proudly and diligently earned his Master’s of Music from SUNY Stony Brook.
In addition to his studies, Keenan plays with a variety of local artists such as the Bobby Sexton Trio, Kickback Trio, and Matter featuring SOR Port Jeff drum instructor Ryan Broderick and Pigtronix/Supro Amps owner Dave Koltai. Keenan can be heard on the latest release by The Vigilance Committee titled “Lost Again”, which also features SOR Port Jeff Music Director Peter Scoma and guitar instructor/show director Christian Cepeda. Keenan can also be seen playing with the Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra. With performing, rehearsing, and growing as a musician, Keenan feels that being true and “letting the music speak for itself” is what has allowed his diverse experiences.

Michael found himself enamored with music at a young age. His curiosity for music lead him to being selected for the Young Composers program lead by local scholastic music leader Dr. Daniel Deutsch at the age of 9 where his interest in music was first formally catered. From there he remained in the music world throughout his childhood playing in the Three Village school district orchestra. It was in highschool that Michael would finally find the bass after watching a live solo bass presentation by local (and internationally) renown bassist Bakithi Kumalo which left him eager to understand more about the instrument that just enchanted him. He was fortunate to always be surrounded by inspirational bassists throughout his continued music education at SUNY Binghamton. Michael has since played throughout Long Island and New York City in a multitude of bands with diverse backgrounds and genres including original, cover bands, and improvisational jazz acts. He also has had a successful career as a sound engineer and community leader for small local acts, as well as being the founder of The Long Island Music Bundle, a promotion which sold 10,000 albums exclusively from unsigned local artists in just 2 weeks. His teaching style emphasizes the fundamentals of strong bass playing while also allowing for the unique voice of each of his students to permeate through their playing.

Joanna Raimo obtained her Music Education degree from Houghton College where she participated and excelled in many outlets- with a keen interest in the classics. Joanna appeared in two main-stage productions while in her undergrad: The Marriage of Figaro and as Lucinda in Into the Woods. While there, she was also the President of the school’s Mime Team and performed and perfected several premieres of newly composed pieces as well as performing in many solo recitals.

Joanna has held an extensive private studio since 2011, prior to joining the team at School of Rock, and has had extensive training in the Opera world. Joanna worked with New York Lyric Opera Theater in their performances of The Magic Flute and The Telephone, as well as in their Young Artist Program. Joanna toured in an outreach program with All Access Productions across Long Island to bring their original production of No More Victims to public schools and was a study cover with the Martina Arroyo Foundation studying the role of Adele in their production of Die Fledermaus. With her experience of working professionally in Opera, she hopes to pass on her knowledge to the students at School of Rock that working diligently, thinking quickly on one’s feet, and securing and maintaining a healthy voice in all aspects of singing is a surefire way to performing at your best.

With years of experience working with children and her kindhearted personality, she is super approachable to our younger students and at the School of Rock Julianna combines her passion for music with her passion for teaching young children as the director of our Rookies program.

Testimonials

  • “A great place for creative, talented, awesome kids. The SOR provides a safe environment for the kids to hang out with friends as the make music together. Best thing we did for our son!!! Thank you !!!!! ”

  • “Like many kids, when I first came to School of Rock Port Jeff, I started with no stage or band experience on any instruments. I've never known what it's like to be on a stage or play in unison with other people. School of Rock accepted me in with constant smiles and good vibes everywhere. Since coming to SOR, I've not only seen myself grow musically, but socially. Calling people at SOR friendly would be an understatement. I've made irreplaceable friendships that I would never trade for ANYTHING. We all help each-other out and no-one get singled out. As a musician, I've grown tremendously. Being on stage and performing has become an incredible adrenaline rush for me, all while being incredibly confident and comfortable through the tons of programs and shows they offer. I'm blown away on how much my friends have improved throughout the seasons and the potential they have unlocked from themselves through School of Rock. Really, in general, School of Rock Port Jeff is an incredible place. I would recommend it to just about anyone who's even remotely interested. My experience here has been nothing short but amazing; and I'm positive I'm by far not the only one to think that. ”
