Dan Gordon Guitar Teacher, Bass Teacher, Keyboard Teacher and Singing Teacher

Dan Gordon was born into a musical family. His mother played oboe in Chicago orchestras and his family was always going downtown to experience her shows. Dan began playing piano at age five and took lessons for a decade with his grandmother who encouraged him musically as she helped him develop his talents and ear. Dan’s currently playing out on the town in a couple bands, including 90s cover band Saved by the Bundy’s and Racket, a group Northwestern University faculty members who share his passion for rock music.

Dan finds the one-on-one in-person lesson as the best way to inspire students to focus their minds the skills and mindset they need to develop further. He says it’s working best when his students stretch themselves to explore music that takes them into new sonic territories.
Guitar teacher, Keyboard Teacher and Singing Teacher Marissa Barnette

Marissa Barnette Guitar teacher, Keyboard Teacher and Singing Teacher

Marissa Barnette can not recall any part of her life when she wasn’t a singer. The daughter of a songwriter, she grew up around music that included his original compositions that inspired her to further exploration into creating music. Mainly a vocalist, Marissa’s talents cover such instruments as keys, and guitar, as well as ukulele, sax and trombone. In the early years, she taught herself to sing beautifully just to meet the expectations of those who performed with her in various musical ensembles and repertory programs.

Later, she trained formally under the expert instruction of professors and mentors at the College of Lake County and Lake Forest College. (Along the way she won awards for her jazz performances.) She has sung as a regular of Timeless Entertainment and that has given her great exposure throughout the area. She inspires by drawing out the best in her students. She listens closely to them to help them and leads them to express their own music abilities in their performances and songwriting.
Guitar Teacher, Bass Teacher, Singing Teacher, Drum Teacher Walker Wilson

Walker Wilson Guitar Teacher, Bass Teacher, Singing Teacher, Drum Teacher

Walker Wilson was at the tender age of three when he was first introduced to music of the legendary band Rush. He recalls how his dad would play those prog rock gods constantly and how the family would join together in song and dance — often finishing on the furniture. Inspired by the band’s musicianship, Walker pursued music that keeps driving him to improve as a player.

Walker plays a broad range of instruments, including drums, vocals, guitar, and bass, and to a lesser extent keyboards. Walker practices constantly whenever he is not giving lessons or rehearsing for his next show in one of his bands. For the band Vivid Vision, he’s the lead singer from behind the kit, and in Fun Monkey he drives the drums on their jams. Walker engages his students in stories of his band practices and performances, and he’ll show them videos of drum solos he’s played at their many gigs. He encourages them with assurances that they too can become drumming rock gods with some practice and commitment.
Bass Teacher, Guitar Teacher, Keyboard Teacher and Singing Teacher Michael Salgado

Michael Salgado Bass Teacher, Guitar Teacher, Keyboard Teacher and Singing Teacher

Michael Salgado’s friends drew him into becoming a musician. His best friend was a guitar player and he wanted Michael to join a band. Then came the need for a bassist and he had found his instrument. Today, Michael performs and teaches bass, keyboards, guitar and vocals using skills he’s build over years of playing in bands from here to New Orleans. He’s played with such legends as Marquis Hill, Isaiah Collier, Ramsey Lewis, and Sugar Blue.

Michael inspires his student through his great talent and his way of connecting to his students’ music visions. He ties them together with analogies that create imagery his students use to understand music concepts and to energize their efforts.
Bass Guitar Teacher and Guitar Teacher Jonathan Dawson

Jonathan Dawson Bass Guitar Teacher and Guitar Teacher

Jonathan Dawson was naturally attracted to the guitar. His cousin had one and she would play it when the family came around. He immediately loved the sound and found it magical for musical expression. He moved started with The Beatles and took flight when he found Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin hitting the late 60s airwaves.

Over his 39 years of playing, he took lessons from a folk guitar lady, a jazz master, a series of teachers at his Pittsburgh arts high school, and then from professors in the music department at the University of Miami in Coral Gables. He’s mastered the guitar, bass, and ukulele, and helps his students develop with those, as well as players in our Performance Groups and House Band. His band is the JD Trio, and he’s played as a sessions artist and in the pit orchestra for such musicals as Rent. Now he inspires his students by showing them the possibilities they have as players in the exciting and ever-changing world of music.
Keyboard Teacher and Singing Teacher Jay Martini

Jay Martini Keyboard Teacher and Singing Teacher

Jay Martini felt drawn to music and the piano as a young boy when his musician father entertained the family and friends regularly in their Skokie home. He is said to have been playing by age 3 with his legendary father and by 6 was getting individual lessons from a local professional. The Beatles. Chicago. Elton John. Billy Joel. Keith Emerson. Rick Wakeman. Each provided inspiration for the budding keyboardist and his interest continued to expand as he found it further engaging his mind and senses the more he learned.

Jay has played with the likes of Leon Russell and Jim Peterik of The Ides of March. He’s currently on stages with another Jay in his Two Way Jay playing duets of classic songs, and he plays keys and sings in Soundtracks of a Generation, which puts on tribute shows as diverse as Pink Floyd (Have a Cigar), Van Morrison (Irish Heartbeat) and The Commitments. Jay nurtures his students musical growth by listening to what they want to play and teaching the foundations from that music, whether it’s classic rock or today’s pop sounds.
Drum Teacher Andrew Kolb

Andrew Kolb Drum Teacher Andrew Kolb

Andrew Kolb grew up in a musical family. Everyone played an instrument. Their father drew them in with his great sax playing, and the rest chose their instruments to complement other family members and find their musical passions. Andrew chose drums and began with private lessons at age five. In high school, he joined the marching band and took his place as a leader of the drumline. Later as he finished his music degree at Elmhurst College he instructed the local high school’s drumline and led them to great performances and competitions.

As a grad, he’s played in the drumline for Keith Urban’s show at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, and led a choir that included a spectacular European tour. At School of Rock Libertyville he’s inspiring his students by fulfilling their music interests through playing what they want to learn and building fundamental foundations along the way. He overcomes the challenges of teaching the youngest of the young students by demonstrating concepts where the words just won’t do.

Reviews

What I like about the program is that my kids LOVE it!

This is so different from the music lessons that existed when I was a kid. These kids are actually making music and learning to play as a band. The performances are so impressive, and watching the kids gain confidence and express themselves on stage is priceless.

The structure around how kids learn is amazing.

Taking lessons to learn an instrument is one thing, but learning how to be a part of a band is on another level. These kids are learning how to communicate, respect people and their opinions, and how to be accountable for themselves. It’s more than just music here.
