Music programs at School of Rock Glen Ellyn combine one-on-one lessons with group band practices

Programs we offer

Remote student playing guitar
All Ages

At School of Rock Glen Ellyn, our students can take online, one-on-one music instruction from the comfort of their homes. We call this program School of Rock Remote. This online music program contains weekly one-on-one instruction conducted by our expert School of Rock instructors in a safe virtual lesson room.
Students will receive their training using our proprietary education program, The School of Rock Method™, which couples live video lessons with our proprietary Method App™, SongFirst Approach™ and Method Books™.

All of our music programs for kids, teens, and adults are designed to help students gain amazing musical proficiency. School of Rock’s online music lesson program is no exception. Online guitar lessons, online piano lessons, online drum lessons, online singing lessons and online bass guitar lessons are all offered through the School of Rock Remote online program.

Little Wing music program for toddlers and preschoolers
Little Wing
Ages 3-5

At School of Rock Glen Ellyn our Little Wing music program for preschoolers and toddlers teaches students foundational music skills by playing games and participating in other interactive musical activities. Little Wing students have one weekly group music lesson in which they use classic rock songs to learn about rhythm, song structure, melody and dynamics through play.

The Path to Take the Stage

The Little Wing music program is the first step in a young musician's journey. At School of Rock Glen Ellyn, toddlers and preschoolers who show an interest in music should start with Little Wing. As they get older, they will progress into the Rookies program, followed by Rock 101 and the Performance Program.

Rookies music program for children
Ages 6-7

At School of Rock Glen Ellyn, our music program for children with no previous musical experience (typically ages 6 to 7-years-old) is called Rookies. Rookies students have one weekly group music lesson where they learn fundamentals like chords, rhythm and song structure. Kids get to learn and experiment with multiple instruments so they can later decide which one they ultimately want to continue pursuing in Rock 101.

All of our music programs are designed to inspire students to learn and develop a strong musical proficiency. At School of Rock Glen Ellyn, younger students who are not ready for a more comprehensive program like Rock 101 can start in Rookies. Additionally, students who have completed the Little Wing program will progress into the Rookies music program. No prior musical experience is needed for Rookies. Once your child is ready for private music lessons (typically older than first or second graders), they will graduate into our Rock 101 program.

Ages 7-12

Rock 101 is one of School of Rock Glen Ellyn's top programs for kids and beginners. Students have one weekly group rehearsal where they learn to play classic rock songs that have been simplified for beginner musicians. Additionally, Rock 101 students in Glen Ellyn have a weekly private music lesson with an instructor who helps them learn the concepts and skills behind their performance songs. Students will experience how their instrument fits into the bigger picture with full-band group lessons and will fine-tune their talents with one-on-one private instruction.

Our music programs for kids in are designed to get students on stage performing, with the goal of building strong musical proficiency. Younger students at School of Rock Glen Ellyn who have participated in the Rookies program can move to our Rock 101 music program once they’re ready. Additionally, students (typically ages 7 to 12-years-old) can begin Rock 101 without any prior experience. The goal of this rock program is to quickly develop a basic competence on students’ chosen instruments before moving on to our famous Performance Program.

Ages 8-18

The Performance Program at School of Rock Glen Ellyn is our hallmark music program, where tens of thousands of students enroll each year. It consists of a weekly group rehearsal where kids and teens learn by playing rock music's most iconic songs with a band composed of their peers. Students are assigned songs and parts that are tailored to them based on their age, experience and ability to learn new skills and concepts. Students then work through their parts in weekly private music lessons, refining the skills and concepts that those songs introduce. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare kids and teens for live performances. Every few months, School of Rock Glen Ellyn Performance Program students take the stage and play at local music venues in front of a live audience.

School of Rock Glen Ellyn's music programs for kids and teens are designed to inspire by getting students on stage and performing. All of our other music education programs focus on readying students for our famous Performance Program. This is where students develop incredible musical skills. Performance Program students have often gone through our Rock 101 program first or have some previous basic music experience. These young musicians will have custom development plans outlined by their instructors with key concepts reinforced during private lessons and group rehearsals, all with the goal of performing live at a music venue.

Age 12 and over

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens teaches the fundamentals of songwriting, arrangement and music theory, and helps students compose original works.  At School of Rock Glen Ellyn, songwriting students receive one weekly private lesson where they learn concepts, technique and theory on an instrument of their choice. These principles are then applied in a weekly group lesson where students work together on songwriting exercises and lyrical workshops.  Every few months, Songwriting students take the stage to perform or band together to record their original songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens in Glen Ellyn is designed to create musical proficiency through the creation of original music. Students at School of Rock Glen Ellyn who have completed our Rock 101 program can move to our Songwriting program once they’re ready. Additionally, new students who have prior experience with and basic knowledge of an instrument can also begin Songwriting. The program culminates with a live showcase where students perform their original compositions in bands at a local music venue. Students taking the Songwriting Program online will remotely record their original songs to produce a demo of the class's music.

Ages 18+

School of Rock Glen Ellyn's Adult Program is for students over 18 years old who are looking to either improve their musical proficiency or pick up an instrument with no prior musical experience. As with most School of Rock music programs, the Adult Program uses a performance-based music education approach. This means the curriculum focuses on learning music concepts and applying them in a live performance setting. Our Adult Music Program includes one weekly private music lesson and a weekly group rehearsal. Every student at School of Rock Glen Ellyn is placed in a band of fellow adults and then assigned specific songs as a way of learning key music concepts and skills. Adult students then take the stage to play at a live show in .

House Band program for gigging at local venues around town
House Band
Ages 8-18

The School of Rock Glen Ellyn House Band music program gives students ages 8-18 the opportunity to join a gigging band composed of fellow musicians from their school. These students perform additional live shows throughout the year. All students in the Performance Program have the opportunity to audition for a spot in School of Rock Glen Ellyn's House Band. Once selected, House Band members become leaders in their School of Rock community and perform live shows at rock venues throughout the year.

Performance is the core of School of Rock's educational approach. Therefore, we create additional opportunities for students to perform on stages throughout and the rest of . The House Band music program allows each school's most talented students the opportunity to join a band and play routinely in front of live audiences. Once a member, students will gain real music experience associated with gigging musicians and will become leaders and mentors inside the School of Rock community.

The AllStars national tour features the best child and teen musicians
Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock AllStars Tour takes the very best students from around the world and sends them on a nationwide summer tour across the United States. Less than 1% of School of Rock students are selected each year to represent School of Rock as an AllStar. All Performance Program students are eligible to audition for this prestigious program. The intensive audition process starts off with video submissions followed by live auditions. Once selected, AllStar students will have an authentic touring experience including traveling on a tour bus, doing tour publicity and starring in nightly performances at famous venues and festivals during a two-week tour.

Becoming an AllStar is the highest level of achievement for a School of Rock student. They play on legendary stages large and small, including The Knitting Factory, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, The Troubadour and Lollapalooza. AllStar students often go on to have accomplished careers in the music industry. Former AllStars have gone on to become touring artists, star in Broadway musicals, get signed to record deals, become finalists on talent competitions like "The Voice" and "American Idol" and have other notable roles in the music industry.

At School of Rock we teach differently than other music schools in Glen Ellyn. Our curriculum is performance-based, meaning that we prepare students to perform. Our piano lessons for beginners combine weekly private instruction with weekly band rehearsals. At School of Rock Glen Ellyn, our beginner keyboard lessons for kids take key concepts and music fundamentals—finger placement, scales, key differentiation and more—and teach them through popular rock songs. This approach inspires and engages students, which results in attaining a high level of musical proficiency. Sean Briskey Guitar Teacher

Sean Briskey is a guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and instructor based out of Chicago, IL. Currently, he performs frequently with Stampy, Great Sky Band, Shady Grady & the Nobodies and Northwest Corner.

Sean was surprised with a guitar at the age of 10 by his father and has not looked back since. He co-wrote and recorded his first album when he was just 16 years old. By the time he was a senior in high school, he had already performed at many notable Chicagoland venues and shared bills with national touring acts such as The Alan Parsons Project and The Ides Of March. He gained a tight grasp on music theory and multiple genres/styles while studying under Chicago jazz giants Kyle Asche, Pat Fleming, Anthony Molinaro and Victor Garcia while at Loyola University. After completing his degree, Sean went on to teach guitar and ensemble performance for a few Chicago music-based companies before landing his current position with School of Rock Glen Ellyn.

Sheldon Dukes Bass Guitar Teacher

Sheldon Dukes is a seven-year professional bassist in the Chicagoland area. He’s well-versed in playing a large variety of musical styles such as rock, jazz and pop. He’s performed on many stages, including the United Center. He has performed with a variety of different artists, one of them being six-time Grammy Award winner Bebe Winans.

David Belcher Drum Teacher

David’s passion for drums was ignited when he witnessed a rock concert at a middle school talent show in his early teens. He finds an immense amount of joy in teaching and bestowing just a little sliver of his wild musical mind into the hearts and souls of his students. He believes School of Rock is a perfect avenue for his love of teaching music, as it’s a place that really embraces individuality. He finds great pleasure in meeting each and every new student, learning about their unique perspectives on life and music and how he can help expand their understanding through a shared love of music.

Eric Binder General Manager

Eric has spent the majority of his life as a performing musician, playing in a handful of bands spanning multiple rock sub-genres for the better part of two decades. He's performed at renowned venues like House of Blues Chicago and Bottom Lounge with his current band, 7 Corners, and also done graphic design work for musicians across the country including the logo design of rock band XEB (comprised of founding members of Third Eye Blind). He also served as a co-leader of the Chicago division of 30 Seconds to Mars' street team, where he collaborated with Virgin Records on marketing and promotion, as well as the distribution of promotional materials. After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Business from Full Sail University, he fell in love with the idea of being a part of School of Rock, where he could put his lifetime of experience in the music industry to good use. He is absolutely thrilled to be able to share his passion for music and his insights about the music industry with the kids who will become torch-bearers for the local music scene and beyond.

Tina Schmidt Studio Coordinator

Tina Schmidt’s journey with School of Rock started as a parent of two awesome boys that began attending the day the school opened its doors in 2013. She saw firsthand how unique and special the program was through the eyes of her sons. Sharing their excitement about music that is so close to your heart and being part of the great opportunities they were experiencing, School of Rock Glen Ellyn became home. She knew from that moment that her background in education and her lifelong passion for music could truly come together at School of Rock. So when the roles of Studio Coordinator and Little Wing Instructor presented themselves, it was a perfect fit. With a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Northern Illinois University and a Master’s Degree from University of Illinois, Chicago, Tina is no stranger to working with children of all ages. Being an educator, she understands the importance of music education and all the rewarding benefits it has to offer. When she is not busy playing Tetris with the students’ schedules and helping to keep the school running smoothly, you can find her engaging the youngest of rockers in the Little Wing program and instilling a love for music and learning.

Xander Condie Singing Teacher, Piano Teacher

Xander has been playing piano ever since he was old enough to reach the keys. He is currently the worship coordinator at Jericho Road Church, and couldn't be more excited to be teaching at School of Rock. He is an alumni of Wheaton College and served as their gospel choir’s pianist, as well as a vocalist in their concert choir. The only thing he loves more than making music is helping others do so. His former piano and voice instructors instilled in him a deep love for music, and he strives to pass on this same passion to his students at School of Rock.

Sam Cho Guitar Teacher

Sam Cho was enraptured with the electric guitar when he first heard Jimi Hendrix over the radio, which resulted in him spending years studying all of the greats of the 21st century. After graduating high school in North Carolina, he moved to Wheaton to attend Wheaton College. During his time there, he participated with the Wheaton College Gospel Choir in tours around the globe. If you can’t find him playing guitar, you’ll find him in the deepest and darkest caves of the library, studying. He is a guitar teacher at School of Rock Glen Ellyn.

Tim Krahenbuhl Drum Teacher

Growing up, Tim Krahenbuhl was heavily influenced by Tony Williams, Aaron Spears and Rex Hardy. By the age of 14, he started to play at church and by the age of 18 he knew he wanted to be involved with music on a professional level. Tim began studying formally in college under the seven-time Grammy Award-winning drummer Paul Wertico at the Chicago College of Performing Arts on a scholarship. Tim drums professionally in Chicago, playing for churches, weddings and theatre shows. He also works at clubs and well-known music venues, playing for a variety of Chicago artists, including Ethan Butler from NBC's "The Voice." He is a drum teacher at School of Rock Glen Ellyn.

Jordan Phillips Piano Teacher, Vocal Instructor

Jordan Phillips has had a passion for music for as long as they can remember, and has spent a significant portion of their career working with students and parents to help with comprehension, proficiency and application of music theory. Jordan has always had exposure to great classic rock hits from their dad who played in rock bands in the late 70s and 80s, and is thrilled to be working with budding musicians at School of Rock. Jordan holds a bachelor's degree in K-12 Music Education from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. While in college, they served as the director of the bell choir at First Lutheran Church, and also participated in the top vocal ensemble at Luther College in The Nordic Choir, which has toured both nationally as well as internationally. Jordan has also performed with the Des Moines Symphony conducted by Joseph Giunta. In addition to their choral work, Jordan has been on stage since they were eight years old. They have performed in musicals such as "Hairspray," "Honk," "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat," "Godspell" and "Footloose." To top off their stage experience, Jordan also had experience in roles such as Carmen in the opera "Carmen" by George Bizet. They are a piano teacher and vocal instructor at School of Rock Glen Ellyn.

Brian Vollriede Piano Teacher

Brian Vollriede has played in numerous bands and with many stars. His music career has taken him to over 74 countries as a performing musician. He has played with the likes of Chi-lites, The Drifters, The Classic 4, Sugar Blue, John Lee Hooker, Lonnie Brooks and Otis Rush. His band, The Mike Wheeler Band, was recently awarded the distinction of Best Blues Band in the City of Chicago at the 2015 Chicago Music Awards. Brian was inducted into the Chicago Blues Hall of Fame in October 2016. He loves listening, playing and teaching music of all different kinds, and believes in the power of music to change a life. He is a piano teacher at School of Rock Glen Ellyn.

Justin Walsh Guitar Teacher

Justin Walsh is a multi-instrumentalist specializing in guitar. A recent graduate of Millikin University with a bachelor's degree in Commercial Music, Justin comes with classical and rock guitar performance experience. Justin studied under the direction of Dr. Mark Tonelli (Clay Aiken, John Faddis, Rita Moreno) in both guitar and production studies. A former touring School of Rock AllStar, Justin has played the Gathering of the Vibes, Gramercy Theatre and Union Transfer. While working in many collaborative groups, Justin has played live performances in Chicago venues such as Lincoln Hall, Subterranean, Empty Bottle and Reggie’s. A special highlight for Justin was performing on Naperville Ribfest's main stage in his hometown. He is a guitar teacher at School of Rock Glen Ellyn.

Jenny James Vocal Instructor

Jenny James is a Chicago area rockabilly, country and rock vocalist. n addition to being a vocal instructor at School of Rock Glen Ellyn, she performs as one of two lead singers in a rockabilly band called JP and Jenny. She also headlines shows as Jenny V. James. An atomic fireball of vocal prowess, personality and charm, Jenny is a lifelong singer with a background in vocal performance and musical theater. She’s never met a song she couldn’t sing, and she makes every tune her very own. She is a songwriter/composer, multi-instrumentalist, and world-class entertainer who has appeared in bands, plays, productions and hootenannies all over.
