At School of Rock Regina, we believe that playing real music is the only path to proficiency and a true appreciation for music.

In Rock 101, students select one instrument to study, and we begin teaching fundamentals: scales, chords, notes, time signatures, and all the rest. Our unique approach to music instruction teaches our students vital fundamentals through songs they know and love, not rote memorization. With real musical context in a fun environment, we give all of our students the knowledge they need to really pursue their passion for music.

  • School of Rock Regina’s Rookies Program is designed for first and second graders to provide a fun introduction to music fundamentals. Among other tools, we use proprietary setups for guitar, bass, drums and keyboard to provide a gateway to understanding music. The skills and passion for music that we teach our students gets them ready for Rock 101 and a lasting appreciation for music.

Our Regina Rookies learn the fundamental concepts of pitch, rhythm, form and dynamics with age-appropriate exercises, tools and games. We encourage our students to explore a variety of instruments and play styles so they can get familiar with all parts of the musical landscape; even the most incredible solo guitar players or drummers need to understand how the rest of the band works together.

Roland Schulz is an experienced drummer who started playing at age 12, forming his first rock band at 13. In high school he played in the jazz band and, after graduating, toured professionally with "Transient" a Top 40 hits group. Through that two year experience he learned the challenges, and rewards, of band life. His musical journey next took him to a private music school in Toronto, Trebas Institute of Recording Arts, where he earned a diploma in Music Business Management. During that phase he learned about the inner workings of the music business and also through his internship with an entertainment lawyer who represented artists such as Cory Hart, Luba and The Northern Pikes.

Interested to continue his business studies, Roland returned to Regina to pursue a Business degree at the U of R. While completing his degree, he operated and started up various businesses with his family. After successfully selling the main family business, Roland went on to complete his MBA through the Levene School of Business at the U of R.

It was in January 2016 that Roland discovered the School of Rock franchise business opportunity. "When I started to research it, " he said, "I realized very quickly it brought my love for music and business together in a unique way. It gave kids the opportunity to learn music with others while gaining confidence on stage. I wish I would have had this type of school when I was growing up! I am excited to bring this opportunity to kids in Regina and surrounding area to be able to rock on stage and in life!"

Roland currently drums for a local blues/rock band. He will be one of the school's drum instructors as well as oversee the financial and human resource aspects of the school.

      Time to rock Regina!

Laurie's experience with music started with singing in elementary school choirs and taking piano lessons. During highschool, she shifted to buying and listening to various kinds of rock music and going to concerts. She liked the School of Rock model right away when she heard about it from Roland. "Where else can kids get this type of opportunity?" she said. "Or the opportunity to aspire to higher levels such as the school 'House Band' or national 'All Stars' program? This is more than a business, it feels like a calling to help kids pursue their musical passion."

Laurie is an experienced administrator having assisted various Presidents of a provincial Treasury Board Crown. She also pursued research and policy revision and helped establish the organization’s first employee wellness program. Most recently she was the Managing Director for the Family Enterprise Xchange (formerly the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise). She holds a B.A. Advanced majoring in English as well as a Certificate in Administration from the University of Regina. As General Manager Laurie will focus on the overall business strategy, studio scheduling and marketing aspects of the school.

Laurie and Roland have two sons, Connor, age 20, and Quinn, 15--and Roxy, their beloved border collie!

Testimonios

  • “School of Rock is the best thing we have done for our three children. They learn self-confidence, teamwork, and musicianship in an environment that is safe and free of the typical age-barrier restrictions that are often inherent in other student activities. The youngest and oldest kids in the school work together and everyone is an equal on stage. I wish other youth activities were as welcoming.”
    — Tony C., parent, Great Valley, PA
  • ““I can’t tell you what an enriching experience this has been for our whole family and especially for Josh. The instructors there were so much more than teachers for Josh, they were his idols and his role models. It has been an amazing time, and I know that as Josh gets older he will look back on all the memories he made at the SOR fondly. You have created something special there, and I hope you understand what an impact your efforts have had on the lives of these children.Thank you for everything!"”
    — Tim Gallagher, Father of School of Rock Denver student
  • “School of Rock has taught me how to perform in public with self-confidence.”
    — Dan, 18, Downingtown, PA
  • “You want your kid to be passionate about something, whether it be sports, scouts, dance or whatever. School of Rock does this for my son. We have discovered a talent we didn't know he had. My son would live at School of Rock if he could. We’ve already recommended the program to several friends.”
    — Susan Snyder, Clifton, VA
