  • School of Rock Portland's Performance Program is all about translating our students' abilities to play in the lesson room to performing for real on stage. In addition to refining their overall skill and proficiency as musicians, students learn what comes with being part of a band: teamwork, collaboration, and the special brand of fun that only comes from sharing awesome experiences with others.

Students learn, absorb, and perform iconic hits from some of history's greatest rock and roll performers including The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Van Halen, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and many more. No matter what they perform, our students will learn incredible skills and enjoy epic experiences that will last a lifetime.

All students in Portland's Performance Program can expect:

    • Weekly private music lessons on guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, and/or vocals
    • Weekly band rehearsal to get students prepared for real shows
    • Real-life performances on stage at amazing venues
    • Advanced instruction in fundamentals such as stage performance, harmonies, musicianship, and more
    • Fun, music, and education wrapped into one all-inclusive experience!

  • School of Rock Portland’s Rock 101 Program encourages fun and success for our younger students as they begin their journey. The days of traditional instruction with piles of sheet music are over. At School of Rock Portland, we believe that playing real music is the only path to proficiency and a true appreciation for music.

In Rock 101, students select one instrument to study, and we begin teaching fundamentals: scales, chords, notes, time signatures, and all the rest. Our unique approach to music instruction teaches our students vital fundamentals through songs they know and love, not rote memorization. With real musical context in a fun environment, we give all of our students the knowledge they need to really pursue their passion for music.

All students in Portland’s Rock 101 Program can expect:

    • Weekly private music lessons on guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, and/or vocals
    • Weekly group rehearsals to reinforce the fundamentals in a team environment
    • A firm grasp of the basics of music theory and technique
    • An understanding of what it means to play solo and in a group
    • Real knowledge gained through real fun!

  • Our top performers can audition for School of Rock Portland’s most prestigious honor: a spot in our AllStars program! School of Rock’s AllStars represent the best of the best from School of Rock’s global network of schools and students. Equipped with incredible musical abilities, killer work ethics and leadership skills, our AllStars have the talent and drive to grow into the next generation of musical greats.

Every summer, our AllStars embark on an authentic concert tour for a one-of-a-kind experience. Our Portland musicians perform with All Star bands in multiple live shows at high-profile venues across the country, including Red Rocks, Lollapalooza, Hangout Music Fest, NAMM, Gathering of the Vibes, and countless others. AllStars also get to share the stage and learn from music legends like Alice Cooper, Eddie Vedder, and Slash, to name a few. The AllStars experience gives aspiring musicians the best glimpse of what a professional music career is like.

AllStars selected from School of Rock Portland can expect:

    • Real-world performances where they can master their skills on guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and/or vocals
    • An authentic tour experience with multiple live shows in various cities
    • Taking the stage with the best of the best from School of Rock’s global community
    • A chance to perform at legendary events and venues, side-by-side with top artists
    • A truly epic rock experience like no other!

  • At School of Rock Portland, we know how to bring the world of music, and the fun that comes with it, to adults. We get our students playing and learning at rapid-fire speeds through real performances of their favorite songs, instead of your old traditional music instruction programs with piles of sheet music and hours of rote memorization. At School of Rock Portland, the stage can be yours at any age.

Our adult students learn the fundamentals of music, including scales, chords, notes, progressions, and more, from real-world instruction through some of the most iconic songs and sounds in music history. Whatever your musical taste may be, our instructors know how to create a program just for you. Whether you’re seeking basic proficiency, a standing gig as the resident guitar player at parties, or future rock star status, School of Rock Portland works with you to help you reach your goals.

Students in School of Rock Portland’s Adult Program can expect:

    • Fast-paced instruction on the instrument of your choice: guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and/or vocals
    • Weekly private instruction catered to your goals and level of proficiency
    • All-adult rehearsals to prepare for real performances in local venues
    • A firm grasp of music theory and technique fundamentals, taught through your favorite music genre
    • Fun, instruction, and great progression of practical skills wrapped all into one!

  • School of Rock Portland’s Rookies Program is designed for first and second graders to provide a fun introduction to music fundamentals. Among other tools, we use proprietary setups for guitar, bass, drums and keyboard to provide a gateway to understanding music. The skills and passion for music that we teach our students gets them ready for Rock 101 and a lasting appreciation for music.

Our Portland Rookies learn the fundamental concepts of pitch, rhythm, form and dynamics with age-appropriate exercises, tools and games. We encourage our students to explore a variety of instruments and play styles so they can get familiar with all parts of the musical landscape; even the most incredible solo guitar players or drummers need to understand how the rest of the band works together.

All students in Portland’s Rookies Program can expect:

    • Weekly group lessons using guitar, bass, keyboard and drums
    • Exposure to essential fundamentals like music theory, pitch and rhythm
    • A focus on teamwork and collaboration
    • An understanding of what it means to play solo and in a group
    • Fun combined with practical learning!

  • School of Rock Portland’s music camps and workshops are designed to bring out the best performance in a fast-paced learning environment. Just like our standard programs, our camps offer a high-energy experience that is fun, creative and team-oriented. Our students learn music by playing it with their peers, guided by experienced instructors from the music community.

From basic Performance Boot Camps to more advanced Guitar Building and Songwriting Training, School of Rock offers opportunities for musicians of all skill levels. Camps vary by location, so please contact us for a current list of camps and workshops at School of Rock Portland.

See School of Rock students performing Let it Be; the final Beatles album release just months after the band broke up. Returning to an ensemble approach of playing and less overdubs and studio tricks. Let it Be was Paul McCartney's last attempt to get the band into playing live again. This is a fantastic rock album featuring gems like Let it Be, Dig a Pony, Across the Universe and Get Back.

Formed in 1975 in New York City, the Talking Heads played their first show at CBGB opening for the Ramones. Talk about a rad start to a career! Being former art school students who were involved in the NYC 70's punk scene, David Byrne, Chris Frantz, and Tina Weymouth began creating a sound of high energy, danceable, and unique music that could be defined in so many ways, including New Wave, Art Pop, and Post Punk. The songs of the Talking Heads are incredibly fun and equally challenging to learn to play. Schuyler’s diverse professional background includes both west coast and European tours with Poeina Suddarth and the Lucid Dreamers, a residency as the upright bassist with the Portland, OR jazz combo “Plan B”, an award winning turn in musical theater, as well as extensive work as a studio musician. He’s performed with Grammy Winner Thara Memory, Fred Wesley of James Brown fame, Radiation City, and Page Hamilton of Helmet, among others.

He’s a graduate of the Alan Jones Academy of Music where he worked with some of the world’s finest jazz musicians, and also a graduate of the School of Rock in Portland, OR.

Zack is a graduate of School of Rock Portland and a ripping Drummer! One of Zack's greatest memories is touring with the School of Rock All-Stars when he was a student. He met/played with other amazing musicians from around the country, and it was a very humbling experience. On the tour Zack played Red Rocks & Gathering of the Vibes, as well as other major events. Recently, he's also been touring with this band LiquidLight. He loves recording and performing music. "As I continue to do both of those things, my goal is to continue improving at both; if I work hard and get a little lucky, I hope to make a living off of my creative outputs."

I hope that my students know how to be honest with themselves; they should be able to recognize things they need to work on and that they know how to tackle those challenges effectively. I hope more than anything, though, that they have fun doing whatever we're doing.

Here are some bands who have influenced Zack: Soundgarden, Frank Zappa, Mike Patton and his various projects, Yes, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, The Beatles, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Aerosmith, Husker Du, The Replacements, Death, Swervedriver, Boards of Canada, Kendrick Lamar

Zack's Dream band line up: Stewart Copeland on drums, Jaco Pastorious on Bass, John Mcluaghlin and Frank Zappa on Guitar, Mike Patton on Vocals

Zack projects and bands include: LiquidLight. And also played with Mursa, The Adam Finger 4tet, Aseitas, Dragon Curve

Testimonios

  • “My daughter was taking private music lessons for two years until she started to get bored. "I want to play with other kids. I want to be in a band". We looked into the School of Rock, and it was the perfect fit! She really enjoys practicing now because she loves her teachers and she knows that the other kids are counting on her. Best decision to come here. ”
    — Chrissy Segal, Parent of School of Rock Portland student
  • “School of Rock, well, rocks! The instructors are not only fantastic teachers and caring people but great musicians. How they so expertly bring together kids of different ages and skill levels to put on such amazing shows is beyond me. So glad my daughter can be part of such a positive, inspiring community! ”
    — Susie Kaplan, Parent of School of Rock Portland student
  • “My son and daughter both perform with School of Rock, and take individual lessons once a week. My 14 year old son has been playing piano and drums for several years. We arrived at school of rock last year to mix things up a bit. He was hoping to learn more about performance, gigging and playing a show with many other styles and personalities. Being thoroughly introduced to playing classic rock, meeting with teachers every week and a great group of kids of all ages to shape another amazing show : his confidence has really grown, as well as his ability and his passion for playing. There is so much nuance to be found when you break down a song into its simplest form and then build it up again in a group. So much jazz in Zappa ! So much landscape in Pink Floyd. My kid is on a journey with SoR- having the time of his life. The group at the school are very supportive, friendly, talented and enthusiastic. Everyone takes care of each other and they all help one another out- both in rehearsals and at shows. This is such a wonderful community to belong to when other aspects of life can be fragile and challenging. All of the staff are excited, smart and available: it's very refreshing ! We plan to stay for years.”
    — Karissa Rippy, Parent of two School or Rock Portland students
  • “Through SOR, our son has become a much more confident performer, which has helped him with presentations in class or at school, as well as in other music venues. He says, "SOR is a great place to play music with your friends, and try out new instruments and styles." I so look forward to the Monday night adult rehearsal to be surrounded by music with other engaged adults, who are really interested in learning and having fun!”
