Mario picked up his first guitar when he was seventeen and couldn’t imagine his life without one, since. He poured all his passion and love for the instrument into every hour he spent deciphering its secrets, learning, exploring, and delving into multiple genres. That work put him on the path he’s on today. An accomplished live performer, respected by his peers, Mario has been sharing his knowledge and experience for the past sixteen years, joyfully helping students to advance their knowledge and mastery over their instrument.

Durga began singing almost as soon as she began talking. Not only is the voice the first instrument and the only one you can bring anywhere, but it brings music to life in ways no other instrument can. From her teaching and singing experiences, Durga feels that singing can and should be a free and effortless form of self-expression that connects you to your soul and truly moves the people who listen to you. Able to sing just about any genre, the most awesome moment of all Durga’s singing experience, however, was when found the singing, songwriting, and composing style that is all her own. As a teacher, her core philosophy is cultivating strong fundamentals and helping students get confident and grounded inside themselves- which enables them to sing any style- but more importantly, to go beyond their influences to find their natural sound and develop their own uniqueness. She has a flair for helping new performers get “in the zone” and overcome anxiety about singing in front of others.

The young musicians flash fleeting grins at parents and friends as they nervously walk on stage, some of them for the very first time. Above them, portraits of rock and blues legends Eric Clapton, BB King, Janis Joplin, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimi Hendrix seem to look on, as lovingly as the proud parents in the crowd. A few last fidgets with strings and sticks and suddenly the drummer is counting them down to the first song. It's showtime. The band members settle into the rhythm and seem to find their groove, finally letting loose relaxed smiles and showing their excitement of performing on stage. The students at Oviedo's School of Rock have been working toward this very performance for the past three months. They met with their instructor once a week for 45-minute private lessons and they spent two-and-a-half hours a week practicing together as a performance band. This season they performed the classic rock hits of KISS and Led Zeppelin, much to the delight of the dads in the audience who could be seen singing along on many of the tunes. 'It took me a while to get comfortable on stage,' said 15-year-old guitarist Athena Hagerman. 'I really like the feedback I get from the crowd though.' 'When I perform, I feel really nervous, excited, happy and alive,' she said. The gratification of performing on the big stage with everyone counting on you is what helps the students stay motivated to learn, School of Rock director Wes Simmons said. At the school, working musicians teach a mix of classic rock, blues, funk, reggae and RB to students, ages 7 to 18. 'A lot of research goes into what we teach,' Simmons said. 'We try to go back to the bands that started it all historically.' 'Our performance-based approach provides an accelerated music education,' he said. 'It gives them incentive to learn and practice because they are committed to their group and the performance.' Some kids, like 11-year-old guitarist Hunter Heusel, seem born to be on the stage. 'I love the thrill of it!' he said. 'When we found out all the school had to offer, I just couldn't say no,' Hunter's mom, Dayna Heusel said. Other students like Athena needed a little push from mom and dad to get on stage before they realized how much they liked it. 'Athena was shy and a perfectionist,' said her mom Victoria Hagerman. 'We had to push her a little to get her up there, but we felt it would be a good experience for her,' she said. 15-year-old Athena is an honor student at Lake Howell High School who dreams of becoming a physicist one day. Athena's only problem is she studies too much, her mom said jokingly. 'This has brought out her self-confidence and she's made a lot of friends from other schools,' said her mom. 'It's made me open up more, become more confident talking to people. I am much happier now,' Athena said, moments before going on stage and rocking out her Led Zeppelin set. Every season concludes with the final performance for family and friends, but instead of taking the stage at school or church, these kids take their first major performance step into the spotlight at BB King's Blues Club. Those who really excel are offered an audition for the School of Rock All-Star performance groups. Those who are accepted do regional tours, sometimes performing during Vans' Warped Tour or even Lollapalooza. 'The most important thing though,' Simmons said 'is that they are meeting other like-minded kids, learning together and from each other and gaining not only a skill but confidence.' It's not too late to sign up for next season said Simmons, 'We still have parts for our performances of Jimi Hendrix and Queen this spring and not just for guitar, we also teach bass, drums, keys and vocals.' From Jimi Hendrix to Queen, kids of all ages are learning to riff at the School of Rock in Oviedo, Florida.

      By Martin E. Comas, Orlando Sentinel 2:58 p.m. EDT, June 7, 2014
If you'll excuse 12-year-old Madison Sciarini, she's about to step on stage and go all psychedelic on us.She's about to "kiss the sky."Madison may not be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame anytime soon, but she's off to a decent start on a recent Saturday afternoon as she faces a raucous crowd of rock fans at a packed Orlando bar.Madison clutches her mike at Will's Pub, takes a deep breath and belts out Jimi Hendrix's classic "Purple Haze" as her teenage band mates drive the beat. Purple Haze all in my brain Lately things just don't seem the same Actin' funny, but I don't know why 'Scuse me while I kiss the sky In the crowd, Madison's mom watches in awe. There on stage, under the spotlight, is Peggy Sciarini's quiet daughter putting her personal touch on one of rock-and-roll's best-known anthems. A Jimi Hendrix tune that Peggy herself listened to as a teenager."She absolutely loves singing," the proud mom said above the roar of the crowd. "She's usually pretty shy. So I was really surprised. I thought she wouldn't want to do this. But she's doing it."The scene '” kids jamming to rock 'n' roll as their parents eagerly look on would have been unheard of a few decades ago. Rock music, after all, was all about rebellion, resisting authority or, as Jack Black drummed into the heads of his young converts in the movie, School of Rock, "sticking it to the man."But for Madison and her fellow band members, the Jimi Hendrix production was simply about learning to play music and having fun. They are students at Oviedo's School of Rock, a music academy that teaches kids from preschool to 18 how to sing, play instruments and, just as important, perform on stage. It's an after-school music school for wannabe rock stars with a focus on learning how to put on a show."We want them having fun right away performing before a crowd, and that way we get them interested in learning how to play a musical instrument," said Wes Simmons, owner and manager of Oviedo's School of Rock. "Once we say, 'Let's play some music,' then we've got them."School of Rock is a national chain started in Philadelphia more than a decade ago by musician Paul Green. The Oviedo school is the only one in Central Florida.Green discovered that young music students advanced more quickly when they started out playing with a group of their peers '” a far cry from the traditional one-on-one instruction from a teacher. The school quickly grew in popularity, especially after the 2003 hit movie with the same name starring Black, whose character was based loosely on Green.Even so, some purists might cringe at the school's approach. This is, after all, no Juilliard School of Music or even high-school band. Forget about the hours of practicing scales, learning harmony and theory '” or developing technique. This school, at its foundation, is about having fun.And there's nothing wrong with that, said Joe Gennaro, a lecturer on music at the University of Central Florida."I think anything, or by any mechanism, that gets a child interested in playing music is a good thing," Gennaro said. And if the students are grouped together in a band, "then it puts them into a mind-set that they are collaborating with others '” that they are part of a team," he said."It's no different than being part of a basketball or soccer team.
