With Bachelors degrees both in Sociology and Music, Joseph Kunnuji found a meeting point of both fields in Ethnomusicology. His research interest centers on studies of music in culture. Kunnuji leads his band, Jo Kunnuji Experiment, which plays his original music and arrangements with jazz harmonic intervention on African music. Currently concluding his Masters of Music research at the South African College of Music (SACM), UCT, Joseph Kunnuji is exploring a novel idea of musical preservation through guided syncretism. In his ongoing research, Kunnuji favours the employment of jazz harmonic devices on African folk songs. His career path embraces teaching, research, and performing; being willing to share his musical discoveries with the younger generation. Kunnuji's musical roots can be traced to the Orthodox Church musical practices of hymn singing. He began playing the drum kit at an early age and moved on to the trumpet much later. His musical influences include Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Hugh Masekela, Terence Blanchard and Muyiwa Kunnuji among others. Kunnuji has recently joined the team of presenters of World Café on Fine Music Radio, 101.3fm, Cape Town.

Testimonios

  • “High professionalism in teaching. Child, youth and adult friendly. Challenging students to improve and to grow. There is a place for people to form a band, and then also to perform. Your public performances give students and musicians an opportunity to experience being part of a concert and being on stage, and to showcase their talents (of which there are many!).”

  • “School of Rock Claremont is awesome! Its about time we introduce music/learning/skillfully equipping kids in this manner. The way you merge teaching theory and practical to the younger rookies keeps the kids wanting more. Your environment is so contagious even I love it ;) well done and keep up the good work :)”

  • “Fantastic!!!!!!!!! My teacher Matthew is really great. I learn so much during the lessons and he takes an interest in the music style that I like and teaches me how to play it. The School of Rock is the best place to learn how to play an instrument. Even music theory is taught in a fun way and easy to understand. I can highly recommend the School of Rock's program to all music enthusiasts from complete beginners to advanced musicians who want to expand their knowledge of music.
