At School of Rock Carmel, we believe that playing real music is the only path to proficiency and a true appreciation for music.

In Rock 101, students select one instrument to study, and we begin teaching fundamentals: scales, chords, notes, time signatures, and all the rest. Our unique approach to music instruction teaches our students vital fundamentals through songs they know and love, not rote memorization. With real musical context in a fun environment, we give all of our students the knowledge they need to really pursue their passion for music.

    • Fun, instruction, and great progression of practical skills wrapped all into one!

  • School of Rock Carmel’s Rookies Program offers a gateway to understanding music for first and second graders. Using proprietary set-ups for guitar, bass, drums and keyboard, as well as other tools, we introduce our Rookies to music fundamentals in a fun way. The skills and passion for music that our Rookies learn prepare them for Rock 101 and a lifelong love of music.

With exercises, tools and games customized to their age group, our Carmel Rookies learn the concepts of music theory, rhythm, pitch, form and dynamics as they play alongside their friends. We encourage our students to explore various instruments and play styles so they begin to understand how individual contributions form a band; even the best solo keyboard players or vocalists need to understand how an ensemble works.

All students in Carmel’s Rookies Program can expect:

    • Weekly group lessons using guitar, bass, keyboard and drums
    • Exposure to essential fundamentals like music theory, pitch and rhythm
    • A focus on teamwork and collaboration
    • An understanding of what it means to play solo and in a group
    • Fun combined with practical learning!

Steve began his musical career at age 16 playing with bands such as Kiss, Aerosmith, Van Halen and Rush ... ok it was air guitar but he was a rocking pretender from an early age. Actually, if you fast forward 30 years... Steve saw the idea for School of Rock and wished it would have been around when he was young. After seeing his children take endless lessons with no motivation, the idea of getting kids on stage with School of Rock just made sense. With a sports background and having coached youth sports for many years, the idea of SoR was natural... individual lessons (practice), group rehearsals (team practice) and the show (the game). "I've always wondered why some people "make" their kids take an instrument just because they think it's a good idea to learn an instrument. You don't hear of anyone making their kids take a sport and never playing on a team or in a game. Why make them take endless lessons with no chance to perform?" As the owner, Steve challenges his team to make sure we are INSPIRING Kids to Rock on Stage and in Life in everything we do... lessons, shows, camps or just having cheese bread! Nicole is from Bloomington, Indiana and has worked with School of Rock Carmel since September of 2014. She began playing keyboard at an early age with her grandmother and fell in love with music and the way it brings people closer with their friends and family. She then went on to sing and perform in choir during her middle school years which she loved. Although she did not stick with an instrument, she continued integrating music whenever possible and eventually found her calling with a career at School of Rock. Nicole loves seeing the students bond and form friendships, with music and performing on stage being the glue that holds those bonds together.

Dave started playing trumpet in IPS public schools in the fifth grade, along with piano lessons. His first performance in front of a large audience was with the Shortridge Jr. High rap club at Bush Stadium in 7th grade, and he quickly found peers in the 8th grade that wanted to start a punk band. That lead to picking up the guitar at 13, and he has played in dozens of bands in the ensuing 25 years. He maintained brass instrument chops and played in the top tier perfomance bands throughout high school, while also studying jazz guitar and playing in the competitive jazz band at Pike High School. Apart from recording in studios from the age of sixteen on and touring both nationally and internationally from the age of 18 as a guitarist, he has also played bass and drums in a variety of bands and toured filling these roles as well. He currently plays in multiple bands that span territory ranging from country, heavy metal, classic rock, modern rock, and punk.

Bernadette's musical journey began around the record player with stacks of her parents LP's - from the Beatles to Patsy Cline and the swing era of the 30's and 40's. With age she acquired a more eclectic ear for independent/alternative and more experimental music that was directly derived from her surroundings via the local scenes as well as friends she made along the way. Becoming more actively involved in their pursuits, which were close enough to her heart to feel almost like her own, she was eventually inspired to pick up the 6 string and begin crafting her own songs. She still finds herself at home among the Indianapolis music scene and is inspired by working with the next generation of musicians at the School of Rock.

Mimi Mapes McCloy grew up in Old Town Chicago, surrounded by music. Her mother, folk singer Jo Mapes, was the “go-to” person for friends and musicians in town. It wasn’t unusual for Mimi to come home from school and find people like Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, Harry Chapin or her “uncle” Shel Silverstein hanging out… sharing songs… stew… laughter in her living room.
Naturally, she started playing guitar at an early age, only to put it down for awhile to explore other genres besides folk. She went on to work with jazz trios and several bands including Dr. Bop & The Headliners, where she was known as “Mimi Valendez”, one of the infamous Valendez sisters. From there she joined Indiana rocker Henry Lee Summer, who got a record deal, which took her on tour with bands like Chicago, The Doobie Brothers, Eddie Money, and Richard Marx, to name a few. During that time she also was doing a lot of studio work, including jingles for Coca Cola and McDonalds. Her album credits include John Mellencamp’s "Scarecrow", James McMurtry’s "Too Long in The Wasteland", the “Twins” Soundtrack, as well as lending her voice to other artists' recordings. Her TV credits include The Arsenio Hall Show, and Farm Aid ‘90.
Through all of this she managed to raise a beautiful daughter, now in college, and is really feeling the “empty nest” syndrome. She has a love of kids and is looking forward to sharing her knowledge and experience with them on their musical journey! Her main influences (besides her mom) include Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Janis Joplin, Heart, The Beatles and Billie Holiday.

Testimonios

  • “We love the School of Rock. They have given our 3 boys a passion. They make kids really care about learning music, plus it's fun! This is not a place where the kids dread lessons. Our boys will come home from school playing, play a concert and are still playing at nearly 10 PM. It's the teachers there. They are amazing and every bit as passionate about what they do. Worth every penny. Our kids have gained confidence, friends, a talent that had given them more friends (at their age it is not easy to ask kids to play but it's so much easier to ask a group of musically able kids to come jam for a bit), more things to join in school- band, choir etc. Kids who learn music do better academically and have higher test scores (proven over and over) and it keeps them busy with a hobby, teaches them about practicing, not letting your band members (teammates) down. Our kids are more accepting. They now know kids express themselves differently, they aren't dangerous or bad just because they may have colored their hair, etc. We dropped regular piano, drums. It was BORING. They wanted to ROCK! Play songs they were interested in. So we switched and this works! We have been going to SOR for 2 years. Hands down you will not be disappointed. Amazing.”

  • “I love the way you get kids to explore all types of music. I love the School of Rock format. I love the way you boost kids' confidence. The impact School of Rock has had on my son is indescribable. He does better in school, feels better about himself and has blossomed into a confident, young musician who is passionate about playing guitar but also loves drums and vocals now too!! ”

  • “You are the only area school that allows young students to play in fully formed rock bands - and your coaches are great! Very happy with how our son has been tutored and how much better he has become at drum set during his 2 years at School of Rock.”

  • “Organized. Thoughtful. Professional. David will start his second year soon. Probably one of the best investments we have made in his student life. Nothing but great things to say about the program.”
