  • School of Rock Ashburn's Performance Program is all about translating our students' abilities to play in the lesson room to performing for real on stage. In addition to refining their overall skill and proficiency as musicians, students learn what comes with being part of a band: teamwork, collaboration, and the special brand of fun that only comes from sharing awesome experiences with others.

Students learn, absorb, and perform iconic hits from some of history's greatest rock and roll performers including The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Van Halen, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and many more. No matter what they perform, our students will learn incredible skills and enjoy epic experiences that will last a lifetime.

All students in Ashburn's Performance Program can expect:

    • Weekly private music lessons on guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, and/or vocals
    • Weekly band rehearsal to get students prepared for real shows
    • Real-life performances on stage at amazing venues
    • Advanced instruction in fundamentals such as stage performance, harmonies, musicianship, and more
    • Fun, music, and education wrapped into one all-inclusive experience!

  • School of Rock Ashburn’s Rock 101 Program encourages fun and success for our younger students as they begin their journey. The days of traditional instruction with piles of sheet music are over. At School of Rock Ashburn, we believe that playing real music is the only path to proficiency and a true appreciation for music.

In Rock 101, students select one instrument to study, and we begin teaching fundamentals: scales, chords, notes, time signatures, and all the rest. Our unique approach to music instruction teaches our students vital fundamentals through songs they know and love, not rote memorization. With real musical context in a fun environment, we give all of our students the knowledge they need to really pursue their passion for music.

All students in Ashburn’s Rock 101 Program can expect:

    • Weekly private music lessons on guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, and/or vocals
    • Weekly group rehearsals to reinforce the fundamentals in a team environment
    • A firm grasp of the basics of music theory and technique
    • An understanding of what it means to play solo and in a group

Equipped with incredible musical abilities, killer work ethics and leadership skills, our AllStars have the talent and drive to grow into the next generation of musical greats.

AllStars also get to share the stage and learn from music legends like Alice Cooper, Eddie Vedder, and Slash, to name a few. The AllStars experience gives aspiring musicians the best glimpse of what a professional music career is like.

AllStars selected from School of Rock Ashburn can expect:

    • Real-world performances where they can master their skills on guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and/or vocals
    • An authentic tour experience with multiple live shows in various cities

    • A chance to perform at legendary events and venues, side-by-side with top artists
    • A truly epic rock experience like no other!

  • School of Rock Ashburn’s Rookies Program is designed for first and second graders to provide a fun introduction to music fundamentals. Among other tools, we use proprietary setups for guitar, bass, drums and keyboard to provide a gateway to understanding music. The skills and passion for music that we teach our students gets them ready for Rock 101 and a lasting appreciation for music.

Our Ashburn Rookies learn the fundamental concepts of pitch, rhythm, form and dynamics with age-appropriate exercises, tools and games. We encourage our students to explore a variety of instruments and play styles so they can get familiar with all parts of the musical landscape; even the most incredible solo guitar players or drummers need to understand how the rest of the band works together.

All students in Ashburn’s Rookies Program can expect:

    • Weekly group lessons using guitar, bass, keyboard and drums
    • Exposure to essential fundamentals like music theory, pitch and rhythm
    • A focus on teamwork and collaboration

Our students learn music by playing it with their peers, guided by experienced instructors from the music community.

She auditioned for House Band multiple times and finally made it in as a vocalist. After a two-year tenure, she graduated high school. She is now attending NVCC and is planning to transfer to Shenandoah University to study nursing and music therapy. She loved being a part of the School of Rock family for six years and is glad that she gets to continue being involved with the program!

A life long singer, Audrey recalls fondly his earliest singing memory was in the children's choir at his Grandmothers Church. Even in elementary school, Audrey was always asked to sing at school events. This continued through High School and led him to pursue music performance in college. He started his first group consisting of a guitar, drummer, horn player and himself. They regularly performed on the local radio station "The High Low and Hot Show" in his home town of High Point, North Carolina. Audrey received a Music scholarship to North Carolina AT State University where he studied with Frank Boulware of the Manhattan School of Music. A verstile performer, in college he sang rolls in Show Boat, Man of La Mancha and various other shows and operatic arias of the classical and romantic periods in addition to various rock and jazz bands. Audrey was invited to sing in the master class of George Shirley (Metropolitan and International Operatic Tenor)and has performed master classes at the North Carolina School of the Arts. In the course of his career Audrey spent time in New York New York and sang with Voices Inc., the East Side Singers, and for the Bi-Centennial performance of " US" a musical tribute to Americas' first 200 years. He also performed in an Off Broadway pilot of New Breed is now the Seed. Audrey has continued to sing with a number of small ensembles locally and has found his passion in teaching the next generation of vocalists at the School of Rock.

A DC native, Ricardo "P"-Nut Johnson began his musical journey on the bass in the 5 th grade when he received his first instrument '“ a Sears electric guitar. He enjoyed the guitar but then he heard the bass in Rufus and Chaka Khan's Sweet Thing and from that point on "P"-Nut knew he wanted to be a bass player. Hearing of his new obsession, his uncle, a bass player in his own right, loaned him a bass and challenged him to see what he could learn by the time he got back from the road and the rest is history. During his years in the D.C. area, "P"-Nut played with various groups in a variety of styles. He played with the sensational vocal group Prim Degree, the cutting edge gospel group God's Creation, vocalist Gloria Brown and blues great Memphis Gold. In the 90's "P"-Nut toured Europe with the blues legend Memphis Gold. After years of playing on stage he decided to go get his music degree and attended the Music Tech College of Music, now called McNalley Smith, in Minneapolis MN. After graduation he stayed in Minnesota for 10 years where was very active in the music scene and where he taught many aspiring musicians. He played with the blues group The HooDoo Kings , the 12 piece group Arayastone , the reggae mainstay Dred I Dred , the funk band Down with Gravity , jazz guitarist John Penny , and a host of others. When you hear him play you get hints of the his influences like Bootsy, Jimi Hendrix, Parliament and Larry Graham to name a few. "P"-Nut is a consummate bass player and works at his craft continuously. In 2007 he attended Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey's Bass at the Beach and later that year he also attended Victor Wooten's Bass Nature Camp. He learned many things at these camps and has integrated them into his playing and teaching. Tired of the cold of Minnesota and homesick for the sights and sounds of D.C. "P"-nut moved back in the area in 2011. He has played with a number of groups since being back and is happy to be a part of the School Of Rock family.

A multifaceted musician, Kevin has been studying and playing the piano since age 5. The piano has always been his central passion, and although he plays guitar and other string instruments as well, he believes the piano is, of all the instruments, the one most capable of being a full vehicle for musical expression. Needless to say, it is his favorite tool for exploring the musical realm, whether in composition, improvisation, or performing written music. Kevin enjoys all genres of music and is currently majoring in Jazz Studies at George Mason University. He studies piano with renowned DC-area jazz pianist Wade Beach. When not teaching at School of Rock or practicing, Kevin can be found performing at various DC Area restaurants, bars, weddings, church functions, and, oh yeah, he sings and teaches voice too. Kevin has a keen interest in singing, and has performed as a soloist with GMU choirs. Along with his interest in jazz, Kevin enthusiastically pursues Irish traditional music, and performs with Irish bands in the Northern Virginia area.

Kenny Gardner was born, raised. and has lived in Northern Virginia for 30 years. "Kenny G" received his first guitar at age 9. It was a cheap Peavey Predator that helped inspire him to play. The first songs/riffs he learned were the intros to "Day Tripper" by the Beatles and "Layla" by Derek and the Dominos. At age 14, he heard Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze," and that was the moment where he knew wanted to learn everything about guitar. Kenny studied music theory at NVCC and is a versatile player of bass, drums, piano, and vocals. He is very excited to be working with the next generation of musicians.

Richard Smith began his musical journey at the age of 8, Richard when he started plucking his way through bass. Seeing his dedication at such a young age, his mom got him started his musical abundance with taking private instruction in guitar, bass and drums at School of Rock Vienna. Richard's skill has led him to perform from coast to coast, as well as with rock greats such as: Roger Waters (Pink Floyd), Earl Slick (john Lennon, David Bowie), and he has shared bills with bands such as Jane's Addiction, Switchfoot, Elvis Costello, The Black Crowes, and many more, Richard is a not only a School of Rock Alum, former member of the Vienna House Band, and School of Rock All-Star, but also the lead guitarist in Milo in the Doldrums - a truly up and coming band. He is already working on a new album and is so appreciative of all the support he received during his time on the show. Like many of our students, Dalton grew up in School of Rock, and, in addition to his obvious talent, he has always been a generous friend and band mate in every show he’s been a part of and we know there will be big things ahead for him. In the meantime, you can catch him on tour - check it out.

  • “School of Rock has been my second home and the people I've met through it are some of the most important people in my life. I also never thought I'd get to be decent at an instrument, due to my lazy demeanor and my consistent ability to learn everything 80% of the way, but by the time of our last show, I felt like I had actually learned enough to where I consider myself a musician. I'm going to miss playing music in a band of talented kids that are all in one place, because outside of somewhere like SoR, its very hard to find that. Despite regular shows being pretty radical, I'd have to say that I have two favorite moments. First is the very first show I played in house band, the Rock and Roll Marathon (the Cowboy Mouth one). Never in my life prior to house band did I think that I would get the opportunity to play on a stage that big and for that many people. For the second one, I can group together both trips to Wildwood, NJ. Those trips were my first experiences playing music away from home, and it was glorious. There is nothing more American and awesome than playing music on the steps of the LINCOLN MEMORIAL. Then, we got to spend 2 days of pure rock awesomeness at the beach, playing on the boardwalk and meeting cool people. But in reality, my favorite moment was all of it. Every single second I've spent at School of Rock was worth it.”
    — Chris W., Graduate, Ashburn, VA
  • “When we decided to send our daughter to SOR, we never imagined what a positive impact that one decision would have on her life. She transformed from a shy, quiet kid to a confident, incredible musician, with an active social life and many close friends she considers her second family. The amazing memories she’ll always have of touring and performing with the All-Stars at world-renowned venues and festivals are just icing on the cake. ”
