In Rock 101, we focus our instruction on the one instrument that students have chosen to study. Whether we’re teaching scales, chords, notes, or time signatures, we put concepts in context so students understand how the principles they learn are applied to real music. Sean Johnson has been involved in music his entire life. As a kid he took music lessons, formed his own band at 16, and tinkered with recording, producing, copy writing and voice acting. He’s proficient playing guitar, drums, bass and keys. He can also rap. Yep! Ask him to rap for you!

Sean studied Recording and Live Sound at the Madison Media Institute in Madison WI, using what he learned to work in television production for four years prior to pursuing his music business career.

At 23 years old he became one of the fastest and youngest employees ever promoted to Assistant Manager within Guitar Center when he worked at GC in Roseville MN in the early 2000’s. Wanting to see more of the world and test his business acumen, Sean moved to Central Europe where he launched his own DJ/Audio Engineering business and worked as an English language teacher. During his eight years there he met and married his wife, Karol.

Sean, his wife and daughter and their two dogs (who you’ll likely see at School of Rock on occasion) returned to the Twin Cities where Karol works as a personal trainer and Sean is managing the Eden Prairie School of Rock.

Nate began playing piano when he was 7 years old. He continued traditional, classical piano lessons until the age of 13. When he was 12, he picked up a guitar and that became his passion.

He studied guitar from the age of 12 through graduating from the St Paul Conservatory of Performing Artists High School and during his time at Musicians Institute - College of Contemporary Music in Los Angeles CA. As the saying goes, "in music, you never stop learning" and Nate continues to work at his craft, playing bass in St. George's Folly with instructors Adam Az'rael and Benny Cole.

While in L.A. Nate fronted a band called Black Velvet Deluxe which was nominated for a Rock Single of the Year in the L.A. Music Awards. The band was known to open for Gilby Clarke (best known for a 3-year tenure as the rhythm guitarist of Guns N' Roses, replacing Izzy Stradlin in 1991 during the Use Your Illusion Tour) and Adler's Appetite (headed by Steven Adler, best known as the original drummer of Guns n Roses.) In addition to playing live music, Nate also licensed music to several TV shows.

After 8 years in L.A., Nate returned home to the Twin Cities where he founded the band The Manchester Social Club, which was named one of the Top 10 Unsigned Punk Bands in America by PopPunk Magazine and the Best Band of the Year for 2014 and 2015 by Minneapolis Happenings Magazine.

During his teen years, Nate was a student at the St. Paul School of Rock where he was selected as a School of Rock All Star.

In addition to guitar, bass and keys, Nate also plays drums.

2018 marks the 10 year anniversary of School of Rock in Eden Prairie, MN. It also happens to be the 20 year anniversary of the opening of the first School of Rock, which was in Philadelphia, PA.

In those 10 years School of Rock has touched the lives of almost 2,000 young people who live in or near Eden Prairie. Some students join School of Rock to simply see if they like playing an instrument while others find their passion here.

You know you're doing something right when your students graduate, go to college and come back asking to work here. Four of our 13 teachers are former students.

When we first opened 10 years ago, we had one music program to offer everyone. Now we have a menu of programs for kids of varying experience levels between 5 - 18 years old. Plus we offer Camps during school breaks (Summer and Winter) and audition-based Summer Touring Programs.

We invite you to stop by for a tour. Call us to set up a free trial lesson for your child.

    - Alisa D., Parent
  • “Tonight was killer! Mazey came out STOKED! She is loving the program and its crazy to me how much the kids pick up in an hour. She was humming and singing TNT the whole way home. We have tried all kinds of programs but School of Rock has hooked! I can’t wait to see what is in store. Thank you folks so much, its incredible to see how engaged the kids get in such short time. (Parent of Rookies II student.)”
    - Ben H., Parent
  • “School has a vey positive, engaging atmosphere and devoted teachers and staff. It shows kids that hardwork and growth go hand in hand. Thank you very much!”
    - Ming H., Parent
  • “Rookies is a great opportunity for young kids to try multiple options before committing to one instrument very age appropriate, my son loves it!”
    - Janice S., parent, Minnetonka, MN
  • “School of Rock has literally changed my son's life. If it were not for School of Rock and the fabulous owners and teachers, I do not know where he would be today. It's a fantastic program! SOR is like a second family for us.”
    - Laura G., parent, Minnetonka, MN
  • “I am very impressed by your learning design. SOR's approach to teaching puts fun first, ensuring my child stays engaged. Combine fun with lessons, independent practice, the opportunity to perform as a group in front of others and you've created the motivation and desire to learn and apply. My son started just a few months ago. He loves the selections, and has learned 8 songs, including one he learned completely on his own.”
    - Lance L., Parent, Eden Prairie
  • “First, we are always welcomed by Sean as we walk in. He knows all the students by name, and where they should be going and as a parents of a 10 year old makes us feel confident leaving her for lessons or band practice. Her instructors have been patient, nice and enthusiastic about teaching her guitar. The Rock 101 is her favorite and she loves being part of a band. The performances are energetic, fun and full of talent!!”
    - Beth F., Parent
  • “Flexible, easy going teachers, prioritize teaching my child to love music without too much pressure for results. Great for my young first time student.”
    - Cat E., Parent
  • “I just want to say what a great experience my son has had while being a student at School of Rock Eden Prairie for the past two years. His skill level as a bass player has increased exponentially and I never have to ask him to practice. He just loves to play. In addition, my son has developed skills that he will use for his entire life: Confidence in himself, selfassurance in front of a crowd, teamwork, how to be a mentor and to be mentored. These things he carries with him into the classroom and someday into conference rooms and corporate boardrooms. Not only does this confirm the approach to learning music (and life skills) that SOR offers, but it is also a testament to the quality of staff, from the management, to the instructors, and to the show directors, they are all truly exceptional. To anyone considering attending this school, I say: sign up today and provide your child with a life changing experience that will be part of their entire life!”
    - Pete M., parent, Hopkins, MN
  • “Fun for the kids. Teachers are energetic, young, and inspirational because they themselves are in bands. A unique approach to teaching kids how to play an instrument...lessons & rock band session each week.”
    - Laurie L., Parent, Eden Prairie
  • “The instruction that my son gets is first rate. His private lesson instructor is phenomenal. My son comes out each lesson pretty enthused about guitar, and when he gets home he just pulls his Strat out and keeps playing. The performance component has really helped his confidence, at SoR, but also at school and in life. You can't ask for more than that.”
    - JIm B., Parent
  • “Everyone is so friendly and welcoming every time we come in! The instructors are passionate about teaching and motivating students! We love school of rock!”
    - Ally H., Parent
  • “All around fun – from individual lessons, to rehearsals, to performing. My child loves playing drums at the School of Rock. Great instructors and staff and a unique format that motivates students.”
    - Melissa S., Parent
  • “Commitment to the whole child, and making the experience work for them and their individual needs, while making sure they work well inside the group dynamic. A band is made up of unique individuals with a common goal!”
    - Donni T., Parent
