  • Our Rock 101 Program at School of Rock Eden Prairie is focused on making the first steps of a young student’s journey both fun and successful. The days of mundane music instruction are over. At School of Rock Eden Prairie, we believe that playing music together is the only real path to mastering an instrument and developing a true love for music.

In Rock 101, we focus our instruction on the one instrument that students have chosen to study. Whether we’re teaching scales, chords, notes, or time signatures, we put concepts in context so students understand how the principles they learn are applied to real music. Using some of the world’s most famous songs and infusing fun into every chord, Rock 101 allows Eden Prairie students to enhance their skills and move on to our Performance Program.

With exercises, tools and games customized to their age group, our Eden Prairie Rookies learn the concepts of music theory, rhythm, pitch, form and dynamics as they play alongside their friends. We encourage our students to explore various instruments and play styles so they begin to understand how individual contributions form a band; even the best solo keyboard players or vocalists need to understand how an ensemble works.

Benny Cole is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and a graduate of the Bachelor’s Composition program at McNally Smith College of Music. He grew up in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota and started his musical journey as a student of School of Rock St. Paul in the summer of 2007.

He has spent the past four years composing music for film and advertising, and touring the country in his rock band Lamp Shade Betty—who has been a feature on major festivals such as Rocklahoma, Moondance Jam and Halfway Jam, as well as opening for a myriad of national rock acts.

Benny relates exceptionally well to his students because he was once where they are. He is one of four School of Rock graduates who are now teaching at School of Rock Eden Prairie and understands how to teach the School of Rock way!

Nate began playing piano when he was 7 years old. He continued traditional, classical piano lessons until the age of 13. When he was 12, he picked up a guitar and that became his passion.

He studied guitar from the age of 12 through graduating from the St Paul Conservatory of Performing Artists High School and during his time at Musicians Institute - College of Contemporary Music in Los Angeles CA. As the saying goes, "in music, you never stop learning" and Nate continues to work at his craft through is own music project, Nate Beck and The Manchester Social Club.

While in L.A. Nate fronted a band called Black Velvet Deluxe which was nominated for a Rock Single of the Year in the L.A. Music Awards. The band was known to open for Gilby Clarke (best known for a 3-year tenure as the rhythm guitarist of Guns N' Roses, replacing Izzy Stradlin in 1991 during the Use Your Illusion Tour) and Adler's Appetite (headed by Steven Adler, best known as the original drummer of Guns n Roses.) In addition to playing live music, Nate also licensed music to several TV shows.

After 8 years in L.A., Nate returned home to the Twin Cities where he founded the band The Manchester Social Club, which was named one of the Top 10 Unsigned Punk Bands in America by PopPunk Magazine and the Best Band of the Year for 2014 and 2015 by Minneapolis Happenings Magazine.

Nate now gigs as a solo singer/songwriter.

During his teen years, Nate was a student at the St. Paul School of Rock where he was selected as a School of Rock All Star.

In addition to guitar and keys, Nate also plays drums and bass.

Sean Johnson has been involved in music his entire life. As a kid he took music lessons, formed his own band at 16, and tinkered with recording, producing, copy writing and voice acting. He’s proficient playing guitar, drums, bass and keys. He can also rap. Yep! Ask him to rap for you!

Sean studied Recording and Live Sound at the Madison Media Institute in Madison WI, using what he learned to work in television production for four years prior to pursuing his music business career.

At 23 years old he became one of the fastest and youngest employees ever promoted to Assistant Manager within Guitar Center when he worked at GC in Roseville MN in the early 2000’s. Wanting to see more of the world and test his business acumen, Sean moved to Central Europe where he launched his own DJ/Audio Engineering business and worked as an English language teacher. During his eight years there he met and married his wife, Karol.

Sean, his wife and daughter and their two dogs (who you’ll likely see at School of Rock on occasion) returned to the Twin Cities where Karol works as a personal trainer and Sean is managing the Eden Prairie School of Rock.

Testimonials

  • “The instruction that my son gets is first-rate. His private lesson instructor is phenomenal. My son comes out each lesson pretty enthused about guitar, and when he gets home he just pulls his Strat out and keeps playing. The performance component has really helped his confidence, at SoR, but also at school and in life. You can't ask for more than that. ”
    — JIm B., parent, Eden Prairie, MN
  • “Rookies is a great opportunity for young kids to try multiple options before committing to one instrument - very age appropriate, my son loves it!”
    — Janice S., parent, Minnetonka, MN
  • “School of Rock has literally changed my son's life. If it were not for School of Rock and the fabulous owners and teachers, I do not know where he would be today. It's a fantastic program! SOR is like a second family for us.”
    — Laura G., parent, Minnetonka, MN
  • “I just want to say what a great experience my son has had while being a student at School of Rock Eden Prairie for the past two years. His skill level as a bass player has increased exponentially and I never have to ask him to practice. He just loves to play. In addition, my son has developed skills that he will use for his entire life: Confidence in himself, self-assurance in front of a crowd, teamwork, how to be a mentor and to be mentored. These things he carries with him into the classroom and someday into conference rooms and corporate boardrooms. Not only does this confirm the approach to learning music (and life skills) that SOR offers, but it is also a testament to the quality of staff, from the management, to the instructors, and to the show directors, they are all truly exceptional. To anyone considering attending this school, I say: sign up today and provide your child with a life changing experience that will be part of their entire life!”
    — Pete M., parent, Hopkins, MN
