About School of Rock Cresskill

Welcome to School of Rock Cresskill—a haven for aspiring musicians who love rock n’ roll. We believe live performance is the most fun and effective way to teach an instrument, which is why we get kids playing on stage as quickly as possible. Our classes are tailored to all age groups and levels of proficiency, and instructors are passionate about creating a legacy of music by helping students succeed in music and beyond.

We also believe that music is more than a solo act. That’s why School of Rock Cresskill teaches kids to play alone and as part of a team. This approach promotes accountability, speeds up the learning process, and fosters an inclusive community of rockers in Cresskill. Students are not only learning an instrument—they’re making friends, building confidence, and becoming better people.

VP Operations, Music Director, National All-Star Director Art Lima has dedicated his life to music. He began his musical journey at age 9 and started on his first instrument - the trumpet, where he learned to read music and gain a basic understanding of theory which provided a foundation that has stayed with him always. Growing up with a classically trained conservatory pianist mother, the encouragement of his pursuit of music was always there, and soon his love of guitar began, which also led to mastering of other instruments over the years.

A University of Connecticut alumnus, Art studied music there before delving into a career of 15+ years as an original and cover band lead guitarist before joining School of Rock full-time.

Although involved with several recording and performing projects with bands such as Lazy Sunday and Rhythm Method, his most notable project was THE ZONE - a Philadelphia-based band whose touring schedule featured them in front of hundreds of people every week in major metropolitan areas, shore points, and resorts up and down the east coast, playing thousands of stages, venues, and stadiums, with Art as lead guitarist and backing vocalist. Performances included NFL pregame and halftime shows as the contracted band for The Washington Redskins, and opening act for notable bands and artists such as Jimmy Buffet and Fuel.

Transitioning out of touring, Art has worked with his wife, Jamie (School of Rock instructor and GM) for the past couple of years on their original collaboration in the studio. Forming together their independent record label OzoneBaby Records, their band FATE28 released an August 2011 debut album Experimental Tendencies, which was featured in Guitar World Magazine's March 2012 "Introducing" section as a promising new artist release.

Art honed in on another passion over the course of creating the album, which is working on the recording side as a producer.

Art is excited to share his knowledge and skills with students at School of Rock in the newly-constructed studio facility, outfitted with the latest Pro Tools technology and software. He is a dedicated teacher who has inspired and positively-influenced so many who have had the opportunity to work with him.

In the Summer Art keeps busy as a National All-Star Tour Director for School of Rock USA, rockin' to raise money for great charitable organizations while touring and playing famous clubs, venues, and festivals like Lollapalooza. The 'Rock The House' tours have raised proceeds to benefit Ronal McDonald House Charities all over the country, and 'Love Hope Strength' finds bone marrow donors raising awareness with the audience members at the All-Star shows, and matched over a dozen bone barrow donors from last year's All-Star tour to help in the fight against cancer!

Art also jams with notable artists at various School of Rock promotional events - most recently, on-stage as guitarist on "Jellybelly" by The Smashing Pumpkins with their original drummer Jimmy Chamberlin (Smashing Pumpkins, Zwan) at Chicago's Montrose Room 2014; and as drummer on-stage with Earl Slick (New York Dolls, David Bowie), Jim Peterik, Slim Jim Phantom (Stray Cats), and Eric Bloom (Blue Oyster Cult) in Milwaukee 2013.

Since jammin' out to Green Day's "Welcome To Paradise" in the backseat of a car at age 3, Francesca knew that music had to be the main focus of her life.

Francesca graduated from Bloomfield College with a BA in Music Technology in 2015. During her time in school, she held internships with entertainment companies such as Bergen PAC and The Syndicate, where she went on to work as a Marketing Coordinator before joining the SoR team.

In terms of creating music, Francesca was the vocalist for the band A Verbal Equinox who gained local recognition for winning the Next Big Thing competition at Webster Hall and performing with an impressive list of national touring acts including Ice Nine Kills, The Birthday Massacre, D.R.U.G.S. and Our Last Night. With A Verbal Equinox, Francesca recorded the album "The Ringmaster Is Pleased To Introduce..." and played many insane and very crowd-interactive shows. She also released an experimental EP this past May under the moniker "Cheska & Friends".

She also plays ukulele sometimes and is also an entertainment promotions consultant, graphic designer, writer and live music enthusiast. You can usually find her getting stoked about shows and avocados.

Devon is a singer/songwriter who fell in love with music, when she sang her first solo at a school play. Soon after listening to her parents record collection would introduce her to the soul of the Stylistics, the heart of Queen, the mind of Billie Holiday, and her Latin roots of Hector Lavoe. Music became an essential part of her life and at the age of 9 she began vocal training with Romanian opera singer Renee Corenne. While building her voice and confidence through the years, it also gave her the push to audition and participate in the choir and dramatic arts programs at school. This path led her to the televised NJN Hispanic youth showcase were she was a finalist performing the song smile by Charlie Chaplin. Her voice gained local recognition in her young adolescents, and she started honing in on writing her own songs and recording them. Devon is currently a songwriter for Hookzandbridges.com were she writes and sings for various artists. She also is working on her own album set to release in 2016. Devon loves teaching at the School of Rock and working with such a talented staff. She believes music is the universal language and possessing the ability to share that knowledge with our youth is absolutely beautiful!

Michael Reid has been playing guitar and performing music for the past 25 years. At age 16, he joined his first band, which gained local notoriety for winning a talent search held by the producer of The Kinks. Over the next few years he went on to elevate the sound of many other area bands, bringing his unique style to each project, and opening for such acts as Twisted Sister, Ben Folds, and Gavin Degraw. Feeling confined by the local music scene at the time, he branched out and landed a gig playing guitar for the incredibly talented Regina Spektor. Michael joined Regina on her U.S. and European tours supporting her acclaimed album, 'Begin to Hope'. Along the way he also appeared with Regina performing her hit songs "Fidelity", "On The Radio", and "Better" on TV shows including The Tonight Show, Last Call w/ Carson Daly, The Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Good Morning America, and Friday Night with Jonathan Ross in the United Kingdom, and has played large festivals such as Coachella and Bonnaroo. In addition, Michael recorded an EP with Regina entitled "Live in California 2006", and worked with producer David Kahne on a recording of her song "Better". In 2008, Michael joined up with Geffen/Interscope recording artist Matt White as his lead guitarist, touring the U.S. and Canada playing arenas as direct support for Sheryl Crow as well as opening for legendary artists Elvis Costello, BB King, and Counting Crows at PBS Soundstage, which aired on AXStv recently in 2013. Most recently he has toured Germany, France, Switzerland, and Austria with Nick Howard, 2012 winner of the German TV show "The Voice of Germany", and remainsan active session guitarist in the NYC scene. He is elated to share his passion of music with the students at The School Of Rock!!

From the beginning, music was constant in the household of rising young drummer, Shawn Hajizadeh, who would become fascinated by the music he heard at such an early age. His father was a prominent Iranian-born drummer playing with famous Persian popular singers coming through the United States. These were his first experiences with the drums, often sitting behind his dad while playing local shows as early as three years old. At six years old, Shawn moved to Atlanta, Georgia where he would spend the next decade of his life.

His musical experiences then shifted to public school education. By the beginning of junior high school, he became more interested in the drums, developing practice habits in percussion and the drum set. At the end of junior high, he became exposed to his district high school’s drumline, becoming captivated by the sound. In his second year of high school he moved back to his hometown of Houston, settling in the northwestern town of Cypress. His love for drumline flourished into marching in DCI (Drum Corps International) in the summer of 2007. After the summer tour he shifted his focus back on the instrument he was attached to from birth, the drum set.

After high school, Shawn attended the Houston Community College studying with the visually impaired master Houston jazz drummer, Sebastian “Bash” Whittaker. Bash became a serious mentor to Shawn, inviting him to his house for private sessions about the drums, music, and life. Shawn also became Sebastian’s driver to gigs around Houston which were lessons in how to become a professional musician. In the mean time, Shawn played around Houston with various musicians and was in the college small group and Big Band led by Woody Whitt, having performed with Bill Cunliff and Rich DeRosa. In the fall of 2013, Shawn moved to New Jersey to finish his degree at William Paterson University. While attending, he has been instructed by Christian McBride, Bill Charlap, Harold Mabern, Vincent Herring, Bill Mobley, John Mosca, Horace Arnold, Dennis Mackrel, and many others. Shawn graduated in May of 2016 and is eager to make a name for himself in the New York jazz scene.

Philip McGarry is an aspiring young musician and educator who prides himself on charisma, hard work, and passion for music and art. He began playing guitar at age 11 and has been in love since. After attaining a certain amount of proficiency on the guitar, Philip joined his middle and high school’s school Jazz band and chorus - allowing him to discover a love for vocals, the piano and the bass guitar. After years of feverishly honing his craft, Philip graduated highschool in 2013 as a member of the Tri-M National music honor society. Since then, he has been on the road almost non-stop, performing professionally as a guitarist, vocalist, keyboardist and bassist over 400 times in 37 US states and 2 Canadian provinces. His performance resume ranges from theater pit bands, to jazz ensembles, to his college choir, and to his own active touring rock band. With a refined skill set, a positive attitude and an appreciation for all styles of music, Philip is excited to further the passion of young musicians looking to take their skills to the next level.

Testimonials

  • “The kids feel like they are a part of something. It's such a team effort to get a show together. The balance of having all different levels working together is outstanding. The newer students have great role models in both teachers and the school of rock band kids. The weekly 1-on-1 lessons are elevated by having the group jam sessions. Best part? No recital hall! The kids play at a real venue for their show - and they sound great.”

  • “I like that my daughter is able to bond with others because they tend to have similar interests! My daughter started School of Rock when she was 11. She is almost 16 now and has grown so much. She has developed a love for voluntarily helping the younger students learn and grow and it makes me so proud!”

  • “Geared to performance experiences, SOR builds confidence and stage presence. Instructors are well qualified in their respective instruments.”

  • “I like the fact that my 5 year old gets exposure to the drums, electric guitar, and keyboard all at the same time. I also like that he is exposed to different genres of music than what he's used to.”
