Little Wing music program for toddlers and preschoolers
Little Wing
Ages 3-5

At School of Rock Chatham our Little Wing music program for preschoolers and toddlers teaches students foundational music skills by playing games and participating in other interactive musical activities. Little Wing students have one weekly group music lesson in which they use classic rock songs to learn about rhythm, song structure, melody and dynamics through play.

The Path to Take the Stage

The Little Wing music program is the first step in a young musician's journey. At School of Rock Chatham, toddlers and preschoolers who show an interest in music should start with Little Wing. As they get older, they will progress into the Rookies program, followed by Rock 101 and the Performance Program.

Rookies music program for children
Ages 6-7

At School of Rock Chatham, our music program for children with no previous musical experience (typically ages 6 to 7-years-old) is called Rookies. Rookies students have one weekly group music lesson where they learn fundamentals like chords, rhythm and song structure. Students also have the option to add a 30-minute private lesson. Kids get to learn and experiment with multiple instruments so they can later decide which one they ultimately want to continue pursuing in Rock 101.

The Path to Take the Stage

All of our music programs are designed to inspire students to learn and develop a strong musical proficiency. At School of Rock Chatham, younger students who are not ready for a more comprehensive program like Rock 101 can start in Rookies. Additionally, students who have completed the Little Wing program will progress into the Rookies music program. No prior musical experience is needed for Rookies. Once your child is ready for private music lessons (typically older than first or second graders), they will graduate into our Rock 101 program.

Ages 8-12

Rock 101 is one of School of Rock Chatham's top programs for kids and beginners. Students have one weekly group rehearsal where they learn to play classic rock songs that have been simplified for beginner musicians. Additionally, Rock 101 students in Chatham have a weekly private music lesson with an instructor who helps them learn the concepts and skills behind their performance songs.

Our music programs for kids in Chatham are designed to get students on stage performing, with the goal of building strong musical proficiency. Younger students at School of Rock Chatham who have participated in the Rookies program can move to our Rock 101 music program once they’re ready. Additionally, students (typically ages 8 to 12-years-old) can begin Rock 101 without any prior experience. The goal of this rock program is to quickly develop a basic competence on students’ chosen instruments before moving on to our famous Performance Program. Students graduate from Rock 101 into our Performance Program when they are ready to take the stage.

Performance music program for teens
Ages 8-18

The Performance Program at School of Rock Chatham is our hallmark music program, where tens of thousands of students enroll each year. It consists of a weekly group rehearsal where kids and teens learn by playing rock music's most iconic songs with a band composed of their peers. Students are assigned songs and parts that are tailored to them based on their age, experience and ability to learn new skills and concepts. Students then work through their parts in weekly private music lessons, refining the skills and concepts that those songs introduce. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare kids and teens for live performances. Every few months, School of Rock Chatham Performance Program students take the stage and play at local Chatham music venues in front of a live audience.

School of Rock Chatham's music programs for kids and teens are designed to inspire by getting students on stage and performing. All of our other music education programs focus on readying students for our famous Performance Program. This is where students develop incredible musical skills. Performance Program students have often gone through our Rock 101 program first or have some previous basic music experience. These young musicians will have custom development plans outlined by their instructors with key concepts reinforced during private lessons and group rehearsals, all with the goal of performing live at a Chatham music venue.

Adult Program
Ages 30+

School of Rock Chatham's Adult Program is for students over 30 years old who are looking to either improve their musical proficiency or pick up an instrument with no prior musical experience. As with most School of Rock music programs, the Adult Program uses a performance-based music education approach. This means the curriculum focuses on learning music concepts and applying them in a live performance setting. Our Adult Music Program includes one weekly private music lesson and a weekly group rehearsal. Every student at School of Rock Chatham is placed in a band of fellow adults and then assigned specific songs as a way of learning key music concepts and skills. Adult students then take the stage to play at a live show in Chatham.

The School of Rock Chatham Adult Program is open to all experience levels and each student will follow a customized learning plan developed by their instructor. Adult students will work together during rehearsal to prepare for a live performance at a real rock venue in Chatham.

Age 12-18

The School of Rock Chatham House Band music program gives students under 18 the opportunity to join a gigging band composed of fellow musicians from their school. These students perform additional live shows throughout the year. All students in the Performance Program have the opportunity to audition for a spot in School of Rock Chatham's House Band. Once selected, House Band members become leaders in their School of Rock community and perform live shows at NJ rock venues throughout the year.

Performance is the core of School of Rock's educational approach. Therefore, we create additional opportunities for students to perform on stages throughout Chatham and the rest of NJ. The House Band music program allows each school's most talented students the opportunity to join a band and play routinely in front of live audiences. Once a member, students will gain real music experience associated with gigging musicians and will become leaders and mentors inside the School of Rock community.

The AllStars national tour features the best child and teen musicians
Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock AllStars Tour takes the very best students from around the world and sends them on a nationwide summer tour across the United States. Less than 1% of School of Rock students are selected each year to represent School of Rock as an AllStar. All Performance Program students are eligible to audition for this prestigious program. The intensive audition process starts off with video submissions followed by live auditions. Once selected, AllStar students will have an authentic touring experience including traveling on a tour bus, doing tour publicity and starring in nightly performances at famous venues and festivals during a two-week tour.

Becoming an AllStar is the highest level of achievement for a School of Rock student. They play on legendary stages large and small, including The Knitting Factory, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, The Troubadour and Lollapalooza. AllStar students often go on to have accomplished careers in the music industry. Former AllStars have gone on to become touring artists, star in Broadway musicals, get signed to record deals, become finalists on talent competitions like "The Voice" and "American Idol" and have other notable roles in the music industry.

Ages 13-19

The Center Stage Artist Search Program is an opportunity to be heard by a major record label. Singers from the ages of 13-19 can submit an audition video as part of the selection process. Selected artists will then have the chance to participate in a studio recording session, and perform at a live artist showcase with record label executives in Los Angeles. We'll also provide School of Rock songwriting camp scholarships for 100 applicants. Submit your video audition today.

At School of Rock Chatham, we offer beginner guitar lessons for kids. Our expert guitar instructors guide your child from start to finish with private instruction and weekly group band rehearsals. We believe the best way to learn is by doing, which is why we combine weekly private guitar lessons with group band rehearsals. At School of Rock Chatham, our vocal coaches are practicing musicians who integrate key music fundamentals—breathing, posture and more—into a curriculum based on performing with a band. Each week, beginner singing students participate in a private singing lesson and a band rehearsal.

School of Rock Chatham teaches adults how to sing in our innovative Adult Program. Students develop vocal skills at a challenging pace designed to help you see results with every singing lesson. Keyboard Lessons for All Skill Levels

Beginner Keyboard Lessons for Kids

At School of Rock we teach differently than other music schools in Chatham. Our curriculum is performance-based, meaning that we prepare students to perform. Our piano lessons for beginners combine weekly private instruction with weekly band rehearsals. At School of Rock Chatham, our beginner keyboard lessons for kids take key concepts and music fundamentals—finger placement, scales, key differentiation and more—and teach them through popular rock songs. This approach inspires and engages students, which results in attaining a high level of musical proficiency. Our piano teachers have years of experience teaching music in the Chatham area, and know how to coach and motivate students of any skill level to play the keyboard.

Music Director

Art Lima Music Director

VP Operations, Music Director and National AllStars Director Art Lima has dedicated his life to music. Beginning his musical journey at age nine on trumpet, he learned to read music and understand theory, providing a foundation that has stayed with him always. Growing up with a classically-trained conservatory pianist mother, the encouragement of his pursuit of music was always there, and soon his love of guitar began, which also led to mastering of other instruments over the years.

As a National AllStar Tour Director for School of Rock USA, his students hit the road each summer to raise money for great charitable organizations while touring and playing famous clubs, venues and festivals like Lollapalooza. (The 'Rock The House' tours have raised proceeds to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities all over the country, and 'Love Hope Strength' finds bone marrow donors raising awareness with the audience members at the AllStars shows and matched over a dozen bone barrow donors from last year's AllStars tour to help in the fight against cancer!)

Art (and wife Jamie, School of Rock Chatham GM) were featured in Guitar World Magazine's March 2012 "Introducing" section as a promising new artist release (Fate28).

Jamie Lima General Manager

Jamie has been with School of Rock Chatham since its doors opened in January 2007, teaching keyboards and voice, which eventually evolved to performing dual roles as Instructor and General Manager.

Performing (vocals, keyboard, bass) on area stages as an original artist and cover band entertainer for 15 years, Jamie currently lends her talents to projects benefitting philanthropic organizations, rocking for great causes (JDRF).

Inspiring future rock stars to build confidence and express their individuality is what makes being involved with School of Rock Chatham so rewarding for Jamie!
Guitar Teacher

Matt Moliti Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher

Matt Moliti has been with School of Rock Chatham since 2007. In the last decade, he has directed over 30 shows and has instructed multiple current and former School of Rock AllStars. Matt is equally adept at teaching young beginners to very technically-advanced students, and all ages and skill levels in-between.

A Long Island native, Matt started playing guitar at the age of 13. Initially inspired by 70s progressive rock bands such as Pink Floyd and Rush, Matt would eventually develop a love for all things heavy metal. Matt attended the Berklee College of Music, studying under acclaimed shred guitarist Joe Stump. Matt is currently the lead guitarist and vocalist for death metal band Sentient Horror, and has been featured in such publications as 'Decibel Magazine,' 'Rock Hard Germany' and 'Deaf Forever Magazine.' He cites Yngwie Malmsteen, Michael Schenker and Vinnie Moore as some of his favorite guitarists, and Genesis, King Diamond and Death amongst his favorite bands.

Nicole Santana Studio Coordinator

Throughout high school Nicole participated in the North Jersey All State Woman’s Choir and musicals ("All Shook Up," "Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory"). A Vocal Performance graduate of County College of Morris, Nicole studied under Ukrainian operatist, Oleg Chmyr. Expanding upon her background of opera, jazz and rock vocals, she co-founded the funk/blues/pop fusion band, Three Humans. Nicole began her journey with School of Rock Chatham in 2016 and is looking forward to the future. With a responsibility to share her musical knowledge with children, she aspires to continue her studies in elementary music education.

John Brigante Little Wing Teacher, Rock 101 Teacher

John E. Brigante holds a B.A. in Music Education (primary instrument: baritone saxophone) from the John J. Cali School of Music (Montclair State University). He has studied classical, jazz and rock, and has experience arranging/composing music for various ensembles. He has extensive recording experience, including on five albums and several session gigs. He has over 15 years of experience teaching musicians of all ages and has a passion for bringing out the best in his students. He has an avid interest in music education technology and currently uses many different music software programs/websites to help engage his students in learning. He is currently the middle school band director in Rutherford, NJ and has taught in Rutherford for the last nine years. John is eager to share his experience and knowledge with the students of School of Rock Chatham.

Christian Benevento Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher, Piano Teacher, Singing Teacher

Christian Francis Benevento has been with School of Rock Chatham since its beginnings in 2007 and has directed over 30 shows. Christian is a multi-instrumentalist and lead singer/guitar player for The Problem. Their album is available on Spotify and iTunes. Christian loves working with kids and has dedicated his life to teaching.

Kendall Lantz Drum Teacher

Kendall Lantz has been playing drums since he first put the sticks in his hands at the age of nine. Since that time, he has followed his passion and dream to play drums. In 2005, Kendall studied drumming at Berklee College of Music's summer program. He then moved to Los Angeles, where he enrolled at Musicians Institute and obtained an Associate's degree in Performance Arts. Since then, Kendall has been playing drums in New York City, and across the country with countless bands of various genres. Kendall has a love for teaching and enjoys helping students learn to play music. His ability to adapt and play what the music calls for is his strength. His versatility and capability to play all genres gives Kendall a unique ability, which he brings to being a drum teacher at School of Rock Chatham.

Sean Meyers Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher, Drum Teacher, Piano Teacher

Graduating from Montclair State University in 2014, Sean Meyers completed a bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance on drum set. His background, however, started with rock and heavy metal music two decades ago. Shortly after choosing the drums as his primary instrument, he went on to play guitar, bass and piano, and eventually even vocals. Sean has made it a goal to be fluent in all styles of music, ranging from jazz and Latin, to rock and heavy metal. He gigs regularly through the tri-state area with a myriad of different acts, and he self-released a full-length album in July 2019 that features him playing all the instruments that he teaches. Sean’s lessons put emphasis on theory and proper form and technique, while still keeping things fun and applicable for students of all skill levels. He is a guitar teacher, bass guitar teacher, drum teacher and piano teacher at School of Rock Chatham.

Rob Romano Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher, Piano Teacher, Drum Teacher, Vocal Instructor

Rob Romano is a professional musician, bandleader and educator. He is a multi-instrumentalist who writes, arranges and records his own music. Rob is well-versed in many styles, playing anything from punk rock to country to bossa nova. He has honed his skills by touring with his band, Professor Caveman, since 2014. In 2018, he joined the hip-hop band Conundrum, who has become a regular studio band for many R&B singers and rappers. He is a guitar teacher, bass guitar teacher, drum teacher, piano teacher and vocal instructor at School of Rock Chatham.

Tony Rivera Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher, Piano Teacher, Vocal Instructor

Passionate about sharing his love of music with students of all ages, Tony Rivera has been teaching for more than 30 years. Learned in acoustic, electric and bass guitar, piano and vocal instruction, Rivera incorporates the latest in computer-aided teaching techniques to capture students’ attention, offering obtainable objectives to encourage growth.
A trained flamenco guitarist, Rivera began, at a young age, performing professionally. He had the honor of performing with such nationally known musicians as Billy Bang (legendary fiddle player), Willy Calhoun (Living Colour), Vassar Clements Band, Tom Chapin, Stanley Jordan, Buddy Miles and Michael Powers. Tony graduated from the American Institute of Guitar, studying under acclaimed Flamenco guitar teacher Dennis Koster. He also attended the Juan Orozco School of Flamenco Guitar in New York, studying under Emilio Prados, Mario Escudero and Juan Orozco. He is trained in the blues and has married the two art forms to create his own home-grown style of flamenco blues. He is a guitar teacher, bass guitar teacher, piano teacher and vocal instructor at School of Rock Chatham.

Mike Maiello Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher, Piano Teacher, Vocal Instructor

Michael Maiello has been passionately pursuing music for over 15 years, continuing his family’s history coming from the jazz tradition. Beginning at age 11 on guitar and drums, Michael then began more seriously exploring bass and keyboards as well. He soon integrated production and vocals into his repertoire, which resulted in four years of work at a recording studio as an audio engineer. He creates music in the ambient, trip-hop, electronic and progressive rock genres, and hopes to create the same musical opportunities for his students. He is a guitar teacher, bass guitar teacher, piano teacher and vocal instructor at School of Rock Chatham.

Mike Dersch Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher, Drum Teacher, Piano Teacher

Mike Dersch studied at County College of Morris for Audio Engineering and Music Performance/Theory. He started his musical journey on the saxophone with the school band starting in fourth grade and continued performing through high school. Mike is a self-taught guitar/piano player and has picked up a handful of other instruments along the way. He has been performing mainly original music with multiple groups since age 17 and also writes/produces and gigs in his free time. He is a guitar teacher, bass guitar teacher, drum teacher, saxophone teacher and piano teacher at School of Rock Chatham.

Bryan McCaffrey Drum Teacher

Bryan McCaffrey has been playing drums professionally for over 16 years. He began as a self-taught drummer and later went on to attend the Musicians Institute’s P.I.T. program, where he received instruction under some of the world's top drummers, including four-time world champion snare drummer Rob Carson and acclaimed rock drummer Glen Sobel.

Bryan is skilled in a number of musical styles and has performed live in nearly every musical setting, ranging from rock and metal bands, to jazz and Latin, reggae, folk, cover/tribute bands and orchestral. Bryan also performed in the renowned off-Broadway musical "The Great Comet of 1812." Bryan has been a drum teacher at School of Rock Chatham since 2011 and has taught students of all ages and skill levels. He has instructed many of the former and current school AllStars and Street Team members, and has had students continue on to Berklee College of Music and beyond. Bryan brings his love and enthusiasm for drums and music, along with his wide array of experience, to his lessons.

Nick VanLeer Drum Teacher

Nick VanLeer started drumming 12 years ago, starting out completely self-taught until finding School of Rock Montclair a year later. Nick has always had superb technical ability on the drums and with the help of his School of Rock instructors learned how to channel that ability into true professionalism, on and off the kit. After graduating from School of Rock, Nick attended masterclasses and clinics with some of todays leading performers, educators and clinicians, including Matt Halpern, JP Bouvett and Mike Johnston. Nick plays every genre and style and currently does session work for recording studios and paid live performances with entertainment agencies and artists under record label representation. He is a drum teacher at School of Rock Chatham.

Will Sapanaro Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher, Piano Teacher, Vocal Instructor

Will Sapanaro is a versatile electric bass player who has played professionally/toured in multiple genres including rock, funk, progressive rock, metal, jazz, classical and musical theater. Will’s diverse musical background and interests help him bring insightful playing to collaborators with a focus on composition and audience. His voracious appetite for learning and studying has positioned him to be an in-demand teacher of not only bass, but of guitar, harmony, ear training and theory. Will has had several students go on to attend the Berklee College of Music, Rutgers University and William Paterson University to further pursue their music careers. Will is currently playing and writing in sci-fi prog metal band Valence and the jazz fusion inspired project Surreal Measures, and is a hired musician for such acts/performances as Bionic Mash, NiCori Studios and Productions, and Julianne Mason. He is a guitar teacher, bass guitar teacher, piano teacher and vocal instructor at School of Rock Chatham.
