  • School of Rock Calgary’s Rookies Program is designed for first and second graders to provide a fun introduction to music fundamentals. Among other tools, we use proprietary setups for guitar, bass, drums and keyboard to provide a gateway to understanding music. The skills and passion for music that we teach our students gets them ready for Rock 101 and a lasting appreciation for music.

Our Calgary Rookies learn the fundamental concepts of pitch, rhythm, form and dynamics with age-appropriate exercises, tools and games. We encourage our students to explore a variety of instruments and play styles so they can get familiar with all parts of the musical landscape; even the most incredible solo guitar players or drummers need to understand how the rest of the band works together.

I have kids who enjoy music and I have always had a passion for rock music myself. I came across this business and was absolutely amazed at what they are doing to change kids lives. Then I got an opportunity to see the School of Rock All-Stars play in Chicago. I was blown away by the talent and maturity level of these kids. That is our product and our brand, the kids putting on a live rock show. No where else can you get this type of experience. I realized we could do the same for the community and kids in Calgary.

I look forward to working with you and your family to change the way we learn and perform rock music.

Growing up as a kid in Toronto with a dad who liked to blast his Hendrix, Zeppelin, and the Police records every day, I've always been surrounded by good music. From an early age I'd be humming and making guitar noises along to all the classics my dad would be playing around the house and in the car. At the age of 13, I finally got my first electric guitar as a birthday present, and I could finally learn all those songs for real. My first time on stage was later that year at a school dance where my first band played Green Day, and Blink 182 covers.

The first taste of the stage had me hooked. From that moment on, all I wanted was to play live with my band as much as I could. Fast forward 2 years, and I expanded my horizons into the world of metal, thanks to bands such as Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet For My Valentine, and Trivium. At this point, I decided to teach myself to sing and scream to one day front my own metal band. Fast forward a few years, and my first metal band was formed, and later transformed into my current band Chase The Grey. While In the developing stages of my band, I attended the Independent Music Production course at Seneca College in Toronto. After graduating, and going through line up changes and in need of a change myself, I relocated to Calgary to reform my band, and pursue my music career out west.

Ted was born and raised in Calgary and began playing drums 17 years ago and never looked back. Throughout school, Ted was immersed in musical projects inside and outside of school, playing in metal bands, cover bands, and the high school's wind ensemble. Even after Ted completed his history and teaching degrees at the University of Calgary, Ted continued to perform in numerous bands around the city such as Sub-Atomic Chaos, Hierarch, Bripolar, and many more projects, even aiding with his practicum school's Rock Band club instruction in 2015-2016. This would lead him towards a passion for teaching and playing music in his professional life.

Music has always been my creative outlet to express ideas, where words aren’t enough. It is my greatest source of inspiration. Singing along to CDs in the basement of my family’s home was where I learned first. Even when I was young and didn’t fully understand what I was singing, I knew the music felt right in my soul.

Encouraged by my high school music teacher to pursue music further, I attended Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton, Alberta. This is where I studied Voice and majored in Performance. Performing has always been my favourite musical experience. To this day I am a musician who gigs regularly. Feeling the energy of an audience is something I thrive off of. It has been where I have learned the most, about my strengths, where I need to grow and how to connect with people. Above all, music has been my greatest teacher of self-esteem and confidence.

I believe music is such a powerful tool in learning to confidently express oneself. It takes a lot of courage to stand in front of an audience and communicate our innermost feelings. The vulnerability of this experience is powerful.

As a teacher, I aim to assist students in their musical journey in a way they feel is most powerful for them, while implementing tools I know are valuable. I create a safe space for students to take risks they may not otherwise feel comfortable taking. And I focus on the positive elements of what each student offers, both musically and personally. I look forward to both teaching the students at School of Rock and learning from them.

Sam Spooner began singing and performing at age 8 and got his first guitar at age 10. He is predominantly self-taught in the rock genre since School of Rock didn’t exist back then! He took formal (or semi-formal, at least…) training in percussion through his school’s band program from ages 12-18, and during that time undertook several extra-curricular projects from dance bands to folk duos, usually providing vocals and guitar. In the late 90s he hit the road, touring clubs in western Canada with rock bands, playing shows between Peace River, Alberta (with Prism!) and Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan. Sam wrote and recorded two albums of original material that received national airplay.

Sam loves to sing and play guitar, bass, drums, and harmonica. His driving philosophy is that people are much happier when they are moved to sing and play together, so he is always up for a jam. Sam owes a debt gratitude to numberless musical friends for helping him develop his chops, along with his wild passion for music. He lives in Calgary and has 4 children.

Bradyn Jobs is from Red Deer, Alberta and has been playing guitar for just over a decade. Metal and Punk rock have always been his heart is but also draws inspiration from Jazz, Country, and classical music. Bradyn’s performing career started when he attended the RDC music program where he performed on RDC’s main stage countless times in solo, duo, Jazz combo settings and even as a Tenor in the RDC Chamber Choir. Now-a-days Bradyn is playing in Chase the Grey with some of the other instructors at the School of Rock.

Bradyn believes that learning to play an instrument is one of the most important things that a young person can do. It teaches discipline, perseverance, responsibility, and accountability (especially in the band setting). Playing an instrument is also a skill that can bring a lifetime of happiness and Bradyn is stoked to share these skills with his students.
