His goal with School of Rock is to make people passionate about music and make them want to keep music a part of their lives. He also wants to instill a love of music in his five-year-old daughter and give her an avenue for expression. He is Dr. Darrel Drachenberg, a urological oncologist in Winnipeg, not the most likely CEO of a School of Rock. He’s a very busy surgeon by day (and very long days), but an avid musician on weekends.
School of Rock, scheduled to open in January, will offer music lessons to students of all ages and will emphasize group instruction and performance.

Drachenberg developed a love of music from his mother while growing up in Saskatchewan. He picked up the guitar, but, disillusioned by the solitude of his classical guitar lessons, formed a band in grade eight with his schoolmates. They started playing at coffee houses and school dances. “That’s when my music really started to take form for me and that’s where my love of music started growing,” he said, in conversation in the Atrium of St. Boniface Hospital. Meanwhile, as a student, he was also interested in the sciences. Medicine ultimately won out, but it was his experience as a musician that ultimately led to his choice of profession. He was in third year doing a rotation with a surgeon. She asked him to close a hernia repair, and she observed him for teaching purposes. She was astonished at his ability with his hands. She also recognized him as the guitar player in the medical school band who had performed over the weekend. She convinced him that it would be an injustice not to go into surgery with the dexterity of his hands, a skill he attributes to his incessant guitar-playing.

While searching out a music school for his daughter, Drachenberg stumbled upon School of Rock, a franchise based in the US that is just starting to make inroads in Canada. Impressed with the philosophy and curriculum, he decided to bring it to Winnipeg. What’s key to the School of Rock is that it is performance based. Students will have the opportunity to play in bands, according to their age and level, and perform in public. “Performance-based learning really makes them life-long students of music,” he said. “Not necessarily that they want to play music for the rest of their lives, but they get the intangible benefits of learning music in a way that’s non-threatening, that’s engaging. And we all know the benefits of music education for people in sciences and mathematics.” Students come out of their shell, learn to work as a team, and learn to improvise. They become fearless on stage.

School of Rock is located at 657 Corydon, where a recording studio, rehearsal rooms and individual lesson rooms have been built. Musician and music lover Mike Reis is the general manager. Classes will be held five to six days a week, mainly in the evenings. All ages are welcome, from three to 83. Students will be grouped according to age.
Instruction will be offered in core instruments, like keyboard, vocals, bass guitar, electric guitar and drums, with more instruments added in the future, depending on interest. Parents supply the instruments, but the school is outfitted with some larger basics like keyboards and drum kits. Drachenberg himself has donated 20 guitars from his collection. A roster of some of Winnipeg’s finest musicians has been lined up as teachers.

Drachenberg is very excited about the project. For him, “playing in front of the audience and having the feedback from the crowd and that kind of enjoyment from performing live in public was really what stimulated that life-long desire to play music,” he said. “So I think I’d love to be the person that brings that to the city.” Source: Winnipeg Women and Men Magazine - Andrea Ratuski

Mike Reis has been playing guitar and bass for over 20 years and has been in various bands for the last 16. During this time he also been a vocalist and taken some piano training. He was also a touring musician for 14 of those years travelling all over North America.

As touring became more serious and “Musician” became an actual job title, Mike took over the roles of Management, Booking, Marketing and Promotions for his longest band, The Afterbeat. His relentless grind landed them on commercial and college radio, various college music charts all over North America and in various television shows, movies and most notably, an appearance on a 2010 NFL Superbowl Budweiser Beer commercial.

Aside from the band's busy schedule, Mike found time co-run a record label and freelance as a producer and song writer. He co-piloted the project “We Need an Anthem”, in which he wrote songs for purchase on iTunes in order to raise proceeds for varied charities spanning across different cities - Canadian and abroad. You may remember the song “Fuelled by Passion” which the Winnipeg Jets used at home games in their 2012-2013 season.

You think that would’ve been enough for most people. Not Mike. Amidst all this Rock N’ Roll, he also helped run two successful restaurants in Winnipeg. Mike is now ready to pass the performance torch along, share his knowledge and use his experience to move full steam ahead with School of Rock! He’s ready to create a positive community in Winnipeg that he definitely wishes had been around when he was younger.

      Hi I'm Steve,

Although most know me as Stevo.

      Music is life for me.

From a young age I knew I wasn't cut from the same cloth as most kids. Sure, I enjoyed soccer, hockey and going to summer camp but nothing captivated me quite like music. I remember seeing Star Wars for the first time on VHS and after the credits rolling, my mother playing the closing theme. In that moment she was my musical hero. She later encouraged me to take up piano and enrolled me in a local family run music program. I loved my instructors, paid my dues and was able to learn what would be the foundation for my musical journeys to come. Throughout my middle years, I played clarinet and tenor saxophone in the high school band but it was always the guitar that kept calling me... Whether it be the main riff of Nirvana's "Teen Spirit" or Billy Joe Armstrong's gnarly "Dookie" pick slides, I knew I had to player guitar, (little did I know at the time) that it was the BASS GUITAR that would truly be my calling...

It wasn't long after that I joined my first band and played some initial all ages gigs around town. The rush of performing on stage was unlike anything I'd ever felt before and I couldn't get enough. After graduating high school, I joined a local band called The Resistance. I quickly got a first hand experience of National touring life and couldn't get enough!

But it was the summer of 2005, when an experience of a life time came my way. A former drummer and close friend of mine asked if I'd be interested in joining another band called High Five Drive. It wasn't on guitar this time, but on Bass instead. Somewhat frightened but at the same time completely excited and confident, I knew I had to jump at the opportunity. Bass became my life. I was a sponge and soaked up anything four string related! From that point on, High Five Drive went on to slay crowds not only in Canada and the United States but in Europe several times over the following years. We released records, shot music videos and even took part in a documentary film covering one of our European tours.

Nowadays, I slap the 4 string and sing in another band called Clipwing, play guitar in hardcore metal band Bearfight and sing with Pop Punkers In 2 Months. I can't get enough! If I'm not playing music, I'm promoting it. Whether it be booking local gigs or plugging international acts on my Podcast Team Steve Radio. I literally eat, sleep, speak, and breathe music...

But here's the thing, I want to pass the torch. I want to see some kid bring back the spirit of Rock and Roll for real! I want to see the world's next best player bloom before my eyes!! Heck, I just want to be at that gig!!!

Winnipeg's School Of Rock has now made just that possible, and I couldn't be more stoked.

      See you in the crowd!
