Our Tenafly Rookies learn the fundamental concepts of pitch, rhythm, form and dynamics with age-appropriate exercises, tools and games. We encourage our students to explore a variety of instruments and play styles so they can get familiar with all parts of the musical landscape; even the most incredible solo guitar players or drummers need to understand how the rest of the band works together.

Art Lima has dedicated his life to music. He began his musical journey at age 9 and started on his first instrument - the trumpet, where he learned to read music and gain a basic understanding of theory which provided a foundation that has stayed with him always. Growing up with a classically trained conservatory pianist mother, the encouragement of his pursuit of music was always there, and soon his love of guitar began, which also led to mastering of other instruments over the years.

A University of Connecticut alumnus, Art studied music there before delving into a career of 15+ years as an original and cover band lead guitarist before joining School of Rock full-time.

Although involved with several recording and performing projects with bands such as Lazy Sunday and Rhythm Method, his most notable project was THE ZONE - a Philadelphia-based band whose touring schedule featured them in front of hundreds of people every week in major metropolitan areas, shore points, and resorts up and down the east coast, playing thousands of stages, venues, and stadiums, with Art as lead guitarist and backing vocalist. Performances included NFL pregame and halftime shows as the contracted band for The Washington Redskins, and opening act for notable bands and artists such as Jimmy Buffet and Fuel.

Transitioning out of touring, Art has worked with his wife, Jamie (School of Rock instructor and GM) for the past couple of years on their original collaboration in the studio. Forming together their independent record label OzoneBaby Records, their band FATE28 released an August 2011 debut album Experimental Tendencies, which was featured in Guitar World Magazine's March 2012 "Introducing" section as a promising new artist release.

Art honed in on another passion over the course of creating the album, which is working on the recording side as a producer.

Art is excited to share his knowledge and skills with students at School of Rock in the newly-constructed studio facility, outfitted with the latest Pro Tools technology and software. He is a dedicated teacher who has inspired and positively-influenced so many who have had the opportunity to work with him.

In the Summer Art keeps busy as a National All-Star Tour Director for School of Rock USA, rockin' to raise money for great charitable organizations while touring and playing famous clubs, venues, and festivals like Lollapalooza. The 'Rock The House' tours have raised proceeds to benefit Ronal McDonald House Charities all over the country, and 'Love Hope Strength' finds bone marrow donors raising awareness with the audience members at the All-Star shows, and matched over a dozen bone barrow donors from last year's All-Star tour to help in the fight against cancer!

Art also jams with notable artists at various School of Rock promotional events - most recently, on-stage as guitarist on "Jellybelly" by The Smashing Pumpkins with their original drummer Jimmy Chamberlin (Smashing Pumpkins, Zwan) at Chicago's Montrose Room 2014; and as drummer on-stage with Earl Slick (New York Dolls, David Bowie), Jim Peterik, Slim Jim Phantom (Stray Cats), and Eric Bloom (Blue Oyster Cult) in Milwaukee 2013.

Anne has spent her whole life in customer service roles, starting in High School she worked in retail jobs in London, moving into promotions work in duty free shops throughout Europe right after college and then to a long career in recruitment and career services in London and NYC. Apart from a short stint in a band in college
(aptly named Zone Ends), her music experience is extremely limited, but she is dedicated making sure every student makes the most of the opportunities on offer at the School of Rock. As a Mom of two teens, (one is a student at the SoR) she recognizes that the benefits of the SoR program go far beyond teaching music. Her only regret – that the School of Rock did not exist when she was a kid!

Michael Reid has been playing guitar and performing music for the past 25 years. At age 16, he joined his first band, which gained local notoriety for winning a talent search held by the producer of The Kinks. Over the next few years he went on to elevate the sound of many other area bands, bringing his unique style to each project, and opening for such acts as Twisted Sister, Ben Folds, and Gavin Degraw. Feeling confined by the local music scene at the time, he branched out and landed a gig playing guitar for the incredibly talented Regina Spektor. Michael joined Regina on her U.S. and European tours supporting her acclaimed album, 'Begin to Hope'. Along the way he also appeared with Regina performing her hit songs "Fidelity", "On The Radio", and "Better" on TV shows including The Tonight Show, Last Call w/ Carson Daly, The Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Good Morning America, and Friday Night with Jonathan Ross in the United Kingdom, and has played large festivals such as Coachella and Bonnaroo. In addition, Michael recorded an EP with Regina entitled "Live in California 2006", and worked with producer David Kahne on a recording of her song "Better". In 2008, Michael joined up with Geffen/Interscope recording artist Matt White as his lead guitarist, touring the U.S. and Canada playing arenas as direct support for Sheryl Crow as well as opening for legendary artists Elvis Costello, BB King, and Counting Crows at PBS Soundstage, which aired on AXStv recently in 2013. Most recently he has toured Germany, France, Switzerland, and Austria with Nick Howard, 2012 winner of the German TV show "The Voice of Germany", and remainsan active session guitarist in the NYC scene. He is elated to share his passion of music with the students at The School Of Rock!!

Charlie Kessenich decided to play drums at the age of twelve when he first heard John Bonham's thunderous groove on 'Immigrant Song' by Led Zeppelin. This and a diverse combination of Paul Simon in the car, Prince on his toy radio, and Ravel from his mother's piano, set Kessenich on a musical path from which he would never stray. Throughout high school he had the good fortune of studying with greats Jackie Santos (Tavares) and Richie Barshay (Herbie Hancock). From this befuddled world of rock, jazz, neo-classical, tribal rhythms, and city sounds, Kessenich has formulated a unique and highly versatile style. After playing about as much as one could in Boston, as well as touring the west coast and Japan, Kessenich moved to Brooklyn to pursue more creative/serious endeavors. He currently plays in numerous groups around the city on multiple instruments. Kessenich recently recorded his first full-length record as a bass player and is currently composing incessantly for his upcoming projects as a leader.

Joe discovered his love for music at a very early age, mostly due to his surroundings. At nine years old, he had already secured his first gig, accompanying his mother's choir on the drums. Although he greatly enjoyed his first performing experience, he soon discovered his true passion- the joy of rock and roll music. He then got struck by lightning and was never allowed in church again. Inspired by classic rock bands such as Guns N' Roses, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, etc., Joe decided to pick up the guitar at the age of twelve, and hasn't looked back ever since. However, he still continued his drum studies, and Joe was offered a job as the Northern Valley Demarest H.S. marching band percussion instructor at the age of nineteen. Around this time, he also began teaching private guitar lessons throughout the Northern Valley area, as well as joining his first band with long-time friend, Rick Warren. In 2008, Joe went on to create his own band, NOOE, where he had the opportunity to compose original music as well as take on the role of lead guitarist. Joe is currently still an active member of the music scene and continues to compose music for his band and as well as accepting various small session jobs. Joe's enthusiasm lies in teaching others the inner workings of music as well as advancing his own studies and furthering his experience as working musician.

  • “School of Rock has taught me how to perform in public with self-confidence. ”
    — Dan, 18, Downingtown, PA
  • “School of Rock. The best music school anywhere. This whole idea of getting kids not just taking lessons and learning notes and chords, but learning songs and playing with other young musicians, and getting out on stage… I was so impressed that my daughter Cheyenne goes to School of Rock on Long Island. ”
    — Dee Snider, Twisted Sister
  • “You want your kid to be passionate about something, whether it be sports, scouts, dance or whatever. School of Rock does this for my son. We have discovered a talent we didn't know he had. My son would live at School of Rock if he could. We’ve already recommended the program to several friends. ”
    — Susan Snyder, Clifton, VA
  • “Our son explored many other extra-curricular activities prior to SOR, and no other activity was able to keep his interest. He has been challenged with new material, gained a foundation in theory and songwriting, as well as learned how to work in a group with other students to put on phenomenal rock 'n roll concerts in real" concert venues." ”
