With exercises, tools and games customized to their age group, our Short Pump Rookies learn the concepts of music theory, rhythm, pitch, form and dynamics as they play alongside their friends. We encourage our students to explore various instruments and play styles so they begin to understand how individual contributions form a band; even the best solo keyboard players or vocalists need to understand how an ensemble works.

TIM BAKKER published his first song at the age of twelve, demonstrating to those around him that his promising career in the music industry was imminent. From the age of 10 he was tutored at a prestigious private music school in Cape Town, South Africa while continuing his formal education at a public school and winning numerous music awards along the way. His final year of high school saw the crumbling of the apartheid regime in South Africa, and for the first time in 40 years, South Africans were allowed into international competition. It was during a school music tour to Europe, where he represented South Africa at a youth music competition and beat the rest of the world to win first prize, where he realized that music is his passion and cemented Tim’s determination to make music his career.

After completing his music degree and further post graduate studies, Tim worked for 10 years in South Africa in the music industry doing everything from playing in symphony orchestras to doing studio session work in all musical styles. After spending 7 months in Israel directing a music project and producing a LIVE album, he moved to the USA in 2005.

He worked for 2 churches as Music Director, one in Boston and one in Richmond.

In January 2014, Tim shifted direction in his career and moved into music education and commercial music. He started teaching at School of Rock and spends his time teaching keys, vocals, and directing season shows.

Bill Roberts has been a professional musician for several decades playing guitar, bass, drums, vocals and several other instruments. Growing up in Baltimore, where there is an active live music scene, Bill performed in various bands five to six nights per week. He believes developing his ear to be of utmost importance.

Recalling an important event in a college music theory class, his professor gave a series of important tests. The task was to identify the interval between two random notes played on the piano. The grading for the tests was given to each student privately. Up to that point the classically trained students had an advantage but that day he noticed one of the best had left the teacher's office in tears. This was a concern. When Bill's time came he scored 100% on every example. The teacher explained how important an indicator this was for a successful future in music. Obviously, Bill was highly encouraged.

Bill grew up in a home with a basement. His bands usually practiced there, leaving their instruments for him to use. This enabled Bill to learn to play drums, bass, and keyboards. He consistently worked as a professional musician even as many of his peers gave up.

Since moving to Richmond in 1995 Bill started his own band, Cat Daddy and has played guitar, bass, drums and keyboards for other top Richmond area bands. In his recording studio, Bill has recorded over 700 songs and several CDs for recording clients.

Bill is delighted to be affiliated with School of Rock because of their unique teaching process. School of Rock is much like the process he used with his own students where learning the instrument by preparing for the show has given their students a much faster, more relevant, engaging and fun path to reaching their musical goals when compared with traditional methods.

Bill is excited about sharing his skills with others and helping them to develop into great musicians.

Testimonials

  • “"School of Rock changed his life. I don't know where he would be. When we first started he couldn't even play his guitar and now he is soloing Led Zeppelin songs and touring with the House Band. More importantly, he has gone from a painfully shy teen to a more confident young man. He literally could not talk to people. He was painfully shy. School of Rock is life changing."”
    — Amy, Parent, Glen Allen, VA
  • “"School of Rock has been an AWESOME experience for our child. Andew smiles when he arrives and smiles when he leaves. This after a tragic accident that left our son with no memory. He has had to re-learn everything and has found a love for music that he did not have before. He cannot get enough of SOR. . It has helped build up his self esteem and given him the ability to explore all of his potential. School of Rock is just a great place for kids who enjoy music to be in a safe environment and grow as musicians." ”
    — Kristine, Parent, Richmond, VA
  • “"School of Rock Short Pump has been amazing for both my daughter and me and brought new meaning to "family time". She has found a love of music and has new found confidence beyond her years, and I have rediscovered my own love and appreciation of different genres of music through Grad School. We've discovered something that we can do together that highlights our individual talents, yet requires us to work together and learn compromise. All of the staff and instructors are very supportive and offer ideas on how we each can improve our craft. Here's to many more years with the SOR family!! " ”
—Anna, Parent & Student, Glen Allen, VA
  • “"My son started with piano lessons then he switched to guitar, because it was cooler. He is a full fledged ROCKSTAR now. It is unbelievable. He has found his best friends at School of Rock. I recommend it to all of our friends."”
    — Tom, parent, Goochland, VA
