  • School of Rock San Antonio’s Rookies Program is designed for first and second graders to provide a fun introduction to music fundamentals. Among other tools, we use proprietary setups for guitar, bass, drums and keyboard to provide a gateway to understanding music. The skills and passion for music that we teach our students gets them ready for Rock 101 and a lasting appreciation for music.

Our San Antonio Rookies learn the fundamental concepts of pitch, rhythm, form and dynamics with age-appropriate exercises, tools and games. We encourage our students to explore a variety of instruments and play styles so they can get familiar with all parts of the musical landscape; even the most incredible solo guitar players or drummers need to understand how the rest of the band works together.

      T. Shay Lane has been playing guitar now going on 27 years. He has been a professional guitar instructor for the past eight years. He started with a couple private instructors in the past and also studied classical guitar at Texas AM Corpus Christi. Other than that he is for the most part self-taught. He plays a variety of styles such as acoustic, classical, blues, rock and metal. Shay's specialty and true passion is metal with technical rhythms and blazing solos. He spends most of his playing time writing and composing original material, in all styles of course. He spent most of his time from 2009-2011 playing in the Austin music scene and the surrounding areas. He has played along such major metal acts as The Iron Maidens, Ignitor, Danzig, and Devildriver, to name a few. As well as events such as Extreme Metalfest, SxSW, and Texas Rockfest. Shay truly enjoys teaching guitar and takes pride in watching his students progress. His primary goal is that the students reach their own personal goals, and he always takes the time to listen to what they want to get out of their playing and guides them in that direction'¦any style it may be. Music has been apart of Marisela's life all of her life. Her mom loved to sing and always encouraged her to sing as well. Her uncles were in bands that were well known in Mexico. She has been singing since she was in diapers. Her first performance was at the age of two in front of her elementary school. Michael Jackson and Selena Quintanilla are her main influences. From there she went on to perform all around San Antonio, TX at many festivals and churches. Marisela started learning piano at the age of eight and loved it. She performed at the Riverwalk in San Antonio a few times and even did competitions. Music is her passion and she could not imagine life without it! Marisela went on to college and did one year at Baylor University. From there she went to Memphis to Visible Music College where she majored in Worship Leading with a vocal emphasis. She never imagined leaving Texas but God had other plans in mind. Marisela was so excited to be studying music in Memphis, the music central! She met her husband at Visible and they were married this past July. She heard about School Of Rock in March and was so excited to work with kids and to share with them her passion for music. She believes that learning music is so rewarding and it shows kids how much determination and dedication pays off. Now she is back in San Antonio still doing what she loves! Marisela and her husband also lead worship at Last Chance Ministries.

Testimonials

  • “I can’t tell you what an enriching experience this has been for our whole family and especially for Josh. The instructors there were so much more than teachers for Josh, they were his idols and his role models. It has been an amazing time, and I know that as Josh gets older he will look back on all the memories he made at the SOR fondly. You have created something special there, and I hope you understand what an impact your efforts have had on the lives of these children.Thank you for everything! ”
    — Tim Gallagher, Father of School of Rock Denver student
  • “Carlson's time at School of Rock helped her recruit most of her current bandmates. It spurred her to apply to Berklee which, unlike other colleges that offer music majors geared mainly toward classical and jazz, offered the opportunity to train as a well-rounded musician. ”
    — Chelsea Carson, student from Long Valley School of Rock
  • “School of Rock is the best thing we have done for our three children. They learn self-confidence, teamwork, and musicianship in an environment that is safe and free of the typical age-barrier restrictions that are often inherent in other student activities. The youngest and oldest kids in the school work together and everyone is an equal on stage. I wish other youth activities were as welcoming. ”
    — Tony C., parent, Great Valley, PA
  • “School of Rock has helped develop my daughter's self confidence. She just lights up when she is on stage. I just love watching and seeing her growth as a person and as a musician. SOR is her second family. ”
    — Lori H., parent, Downingtown, PA
