  • School of Rock Roslyn is now enrolling for our Adult Performance Program, where adult students of all proficiency levels can explore and conquer the world of music. We get our students playing and learning at lightning-quick speeds through practical performance rather than run-of-the-mill music instruction programs. At School of Rock Roslyn, the thrill of the performance is just as important as learning the skill to rock.

Our adult students learn the fundamentals of music, including scales, chords, notes, progressions, and more, through some of the most iconic songs and sounds in music history. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of rock ‘n roll or a metal-loving head-banger at home in the mosh pit, our teachers know how to best connect your love for music with a passion for learning it.

All students in School of Rock Roslyn’s Adult Program can expect:

    • Fast-paced instruction in one of our great musical offerings: guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and/or vocals
    • Weekly private instruction catered to your goals and level of proficiency
    • Rehearsals with others just like you to get ready for real shows at live music venues
    • An understanding of music theory and technique fundamentals, learned through songs from your favorite music genre
    • Fun, instruction, and a great progression of practical skills wrapped all into one!

  • School of Rock Roslyn’s Rookies Program offers a gateway to understanding music for first and second graders. Using proprietary set-ups for guitar, bass, drums and keyboard, as well as other tools, we introduce our Rookies to music fundamentals in a fun way. The skills and passion for music that our Rookies learn prepares them for Rock 101 and a lifelong love of music.

With exercises, tools and games customized to their age group, our (geomodifer) Rookies learn the concepts of music theory, rhythm, pitch, form and dynamics as they play alongside their friends. We encourage our students to explore various instruments and play styles so they begin to understand how individual contributions form a band; even the best solo keyboard players or vocalists need to understand how an ensemble works.

All students in Roslyn’s Rookies Program can expect:

    • Weekly group lessons using guitar, bass, keyboard and drums
    • Exposure to essential fundamentals like music theory, pitch and rhythm
    • A focus on teamwork and collaboration
    • An understanding of what it means to play solo and in a group
    • Fun combined with practical learning!

Music is the gateway to childrens’ growth, whether it’s in the form of great friendships from shared musical experiences or the joy of hearing an inspirational song for the first time.

Our Little Wing students at Roslyn enjoy a unique variety of music-minded games based on some of the most popular music in rock and roll history. Through great music and a foundation of fun, our students refine their motor skills, coordination, pre-literacy, and group cooperation in a safe and inclusive environment.

    Open Mic Rules/Info

Thank you for taking part in what will be a wonderful monthly series of shows! Shows will take place on the last Tuesday of every month from 6:30pm-8:30pm in our upstairs showcase room located at 154 Mineola Avenue in Roslyn Heights. Please review the rules below, and email us at Roslyn@schoolofrock.com if you have any questions. Performers age 17 and under only.

    1. Each performer has a 15-minute time slot, which includes setup and breakdown (generally 1 minute will be spent on each). Any extra time spent setting up will cut into your set time to ensure we stay on schedule.

    2. Electric guitars/effects pedals are ok to use…just no distortion! Acoustics are preferred and encouraged (both acoustic-electrics and regular acoustic guitars). Bass guitars are fine as well. We’re trying to keep these nights as “organic” as possible

    3. Drummers can use our drum kit with brushes or hotrods only – no sticks! If you need to change setup/swap out cymbals, etc., please factor that into your set time.

    4. Weighted piano will be available to use, or you can bring your own (please factor into set time).

    5. Instrumentals, spoken-word poetry, comedy, and any genre of music is OK to perform…just keep it clean and appropriate for the vibe of the night. Originals are highly encouraged!

    6. This is an all-ages event…please keep the content of your performance PG. We reserve the right to cut you off and not have you back if you violate this rule. If something is questionable, email us about it…or just do something else.

To sign up for a night, please email Roslyn@schoolofrock.com the following information:
    - Full name

    - Age

    - Email address

Hailey Unlikely. Derek is also well versed in Afro-Caribbean music having studied
extensively at The Drummerʼs Collective in Manhattan. He studied Afro-Caribbean drum
set, conga, bongo, timbale, bells, shekere, guiro, and maraca with Bobby Sanabria and
Brazilian Drum set with Daduka Fonsaka. Derek utilizes his knowledge by playing
countless DJ based percussion gigs at weddings, barmitzvahs, corporate events, and
parties. He has also brandished his percussive skills for Zumba dance classes and yoga
classes. He is currently playing percussion with Rob Nolfe, and performing at the

proficient guitarist and pianist, written over fifty original songs, and recorded an original
      CD entitled I Would.
Derekʼs formal training began at the age of eight when he studied privately for
eight years with Robert Blumenthal, a highly acclaimed jazz drummer and musical
director for The Harlem Youth Center. He went on to study at the prestigious Drummerʼs
Collective in Manhattan for three years, and continued his studies on Long Island with
Richie Rodriguez, focusing on sight reading and Afro-Caribbean music. Derek is
proficient in all genres of drumming. He is very creative and has incorporated many
unique techniques and tricks into his playing. He is also very proficient with double
bass, ostinatos, polyrhythms, hemiolas, and odd time signatures. Derek is a qualified
NYSSMA instructor and has achieved great success with all levels of snare drum and
      drum set.
Derek tries to cater to his studentʼs tastes, and focuses mainly on the styles,
drummers, and genres that inspire them. He teaches fundamentals, such as rudiments
and reading, but will never force it upon a student. He is extremely patient, friendly, and
relates well to children and adults. Derek believes that music should be fun at all costs,
and tries to fashion his classes with that in mind, at the same time exposing his students
to many different styles, to not only expand their horizons and make them better
drummers, but to also show them how music is all somehow connected, creating a
beautiful universal language; a language in which no words are necessary.

  • “School of Rock. The best music school anywhere. This whole idea of getting kids not just taking lessons and learning notes and chords, but learning songs and playing with other young musicians, and getting out on stage… I was so impressed that my daughter Cheyenne goes to School of Rock on Long Island. ”
    — Dee Snider, Twisted Sister
  • “You want your kid to be passionate about something, whether it be sports, scouts, dance or whatever. School of Rock does this for my son. We have discovered a talent we didn't know he had. My son would live at School of Rock if he could. We’ve already recommended the program to several friends. ”
    — Susan Snyder, Clifton, VA
  • “Our son explored many other extra-curricular activities prior to SOR, and no other activity was able to keep his interest.
