About School of Rock Port Jefferson

Welcome to School of Rock Port Jefferson—a haven for aspiring musicians who love rock n’ roll. We believe live performance is the most fun and effective way to teach an instrument, which is why we get kids playing on stage as quickly as possible. Our classes are tailored to all age groups and levels of proficiency, and instructors are passionate about creating a legacy of music by helping students succeed in music and beyond.

We also believe that music is more than a solo act. That’s why School of Rock Port Jefferson teaches kids to play alone and as part of a team. This approach promotes accountability, speeds up the learning process, and fosters an inclusive community of rockers in Port Jefferson. Students are not only learning an instrument—they’re making friends, building confidence, and becoming better people.

Using proprietary set-ups for guitar, bass, drums and keyboard, as well as other tools, we introduce our Rookies to music fundamentals in a fun way. The skills and passion for music that our Rookies learn prepares them for Rock 101 and a lifelong love of music.

With exercises, tools and games customized to their age group, our Port Jefferson Rookies learn the concepts of music theory, rhythm, pitch, form and dynamics as they play alongside their friends. We encourage our students to explore various instruments and play styles so they begin to understand how individual contributions form a band; even the best solo keyboard players or vocalists need to understand how an ensemble works.

Two bands emerged from that cuddle of crud and proved that you could still make good music. Patrick's love affair with music began at the age of 9 when he picked up his first guitar. From there, he fed himself a steady diet of music from rock's greatest guitar gods, and cut his teeth playing in various bands in the Long Island area. Patrick began studying at Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music in 2005. There, he not only honed his craft and became one of Berklee's preeminent rock guitarists, but began studying composition and production in all styles of music. Patrick was selected to perform at Berklee's Guitar Night Rock/Pop Showcase in 2009. That same year, he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a dual major in Guitar Performance and Contemporary Writing Production. Patrick has since been making a name for himself in the New York rock scene, playing with Long Island alternative band Finespun and most recently playing with New York City's own Bazaar Royale. Patrick has shared the stage with such legendary performers as Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen, and played multiple showcases at both the Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg, PA and South By Southwest (SXSW), America's largest music conference. When not performing, Patrick has been working as a freelance composer in New York City, writing music for various major ad campaigns (Subway, Weis Supermarkets, Merck, etc.), as well as contributing videos for the upstart tablature website United We Tab.

At the age of 12, Peter was determined to learn how to play guitar in hope of starting a band with his friends. This was just the beginning of his musical journey. From there, he threw himself into anything that would offer him the opportunity to play music. As a teenager, he played in many rock bands and studied audio engineering. Being heavily influenced by guitarist Steve Howe from the 1970's progressive rock group YES, Peter became inspired to pursue jazz and classical guitar on top of his rock background. While attending Suffolk County Community College, Peter played guitar in Indie-Rock bands Mystic Flavor and The Woolgathering. After receiving his Associates Degree in music he continued his education at Purchase College where he studied classical guitar under the leadership of world-renowned guitarist, Frederick Hand. Today, Peter is still performing his music as a singer-songwriter around New York as well as playing gigs with musical pit bands, jazz artists, and other local songwriters. As a teacher, Peter encourages his students to have fun, play with other aspiring musicians, and to participate in anything that will further their musical abilities. Peter is currently enrolled as a graduate student at Purchase College where he plans to continue pursuing a master's degree in classical guitar beginning in the Fall of 2012.

To learn how to play the drums is not just learning how to play a beat or a groove, maybe even a song or a solo. Its learning self discipline and self sacrifice. Its learning how to breathe, how to become calm, and let go. It's learning how your body was naturally designed to move. Its learning how to put all of yourself into something. It's learning that the best things are learned slowly and mindfully. It's learning that your mind and body are malleable clay, and you are the sculptor. And most importantly it's learning that you are a powerful co-creator of your life and your destiny, and that whatever you dedicate yourself to, the universe will gladly remove all the seemingly impossible obstacles that stand in your way. I began playing the drums at the age of 10. Through out high school I played in the jazz band, wind ensemble, percussion ensemble, marching band, performed in the pit orchestra for 13 productions and many of my own original and cover bands. During my senior year of high school I studied under the great Dom Famularo. In 2005 I received a scholarship to Berklee College of Music at the age of 17, and graduated Cum Laude with a drum set performance degree in 2009. While at Berklee I studied under many musical greats including my favorites, Dave Dicenso and Deantoni Parks. I now perform in many original groups, cover bands, studio sessions and am an active performer in the Long Island and New York City music scene. I have been teaching since 2009 and find great joy in sharing my extensive knowledge on drumming and music. Lessons with me will include reading music, learning proper technique, active listening and analyzation of music, playing grooves, songs, and creating your own music on the drum set. Specialties include the moeller technique, phrasing, sound design and the relationship between a drummers mind and body.

Keenan’s passion and commitment to music is what makes him one of the most sought-after players, teacher and musician. He began playing in his school orchestra on viola but fell in love with playing the bass at the age of seventeen. It was then that he knew he wanted to dedicate his life to music. Immediately after high school, he enrolled at Suffolk Community College and has now proudly and diligently earned his Master’s of Music from SUNY Stony Brook.
In addition to his studies, Keenan plays with a variety of local artists such as the Bobby Sexton Trio, Kickback Trio, and Matter featuring SOR Port Jeff drum instructor Ryan Broderick and Pigtronix/Supro Amps owner Dave Koltai. Keenan can be heard on the latest release by The Vigilance Committee titled “Lost Again”, which also features SOR Port Jeff Music Director Peter Scoma and guitar instructor/show director Christian Cepeda. Keenan can also be seen playing with the Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra. With performing, rehearsing, and growing as a musician, Keenan feels that being true and “letting the music speak for itself” is what has allowed his diverse experiences.

Growing up in a musical household, Lauren began singing as a young child. Throughout her life, she has experimented with various vocal styles and discovered that not only is her voice powerful, but uniquely versatile. Lauren currently sings in Unaware Wolf and Killer Wails. She also sings and plays bass, guitar, and keyboard in Ninja Tree House (along with Christian and Peter). She has performed with local hip-hop artists live and in the studio. Lauren received classical training at the Hartt School of Music, Dance, & Theatre at the University of Hartford where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Music Education Degree. Depending on each student’s goals and abilities a lesson with Lauren might include stretching, breathing exercises, vocal warm-ups, music theory, ear training, sight-reading, and vocal technique. Although Lauren’s education and experience cultivate growth in musicians of all ages, her playful demeanor makes her highly accessible to younger students. When she’s not at School of Rock or wailing in one of her bands, she’s either teaching parent child music classes, banging on the drums, or going on adventures with Norah (the little girl she nannies).

Michael found himself enamored with music at a young age. His curiosity for music lead him to being selected for the Young Composers program lead by local scholastic music leader Dr. Daniel Deutsch at the age of 9 where his interest in music was first formally catered. From there he remained in the music world throughout his childhood playing in the Three Village school district orchestra. It was in highschool that Michael would finally find the bass after watching a live solo bass presentation by local (and internationally) renown bassist Bakithi Kumalo which left him eager to understand more about the instrument that just enchanted him. He was fortunate to always be surrounded by inspirational bassists throughout his continued music education at SUNY Binghamton. Michael has since played throughout Long Island and New York City in a multitude of bands with diverse backgrounds and genres including original, cover bands, and improvisational jazz acts. He also has had a successful career as a sound engineer and community leader for small local acts, as well as being the founder of The Long Island Music Bundle, a promotion which sold 10,000 albums exclusively from unsigned local artists in just 2 weeks. His teaching style emphasizes the fundamentals of strong bass playing while also allowing for the unique voice of each of his students to permeate through their playing.

THE KILLERS VS. THE STROKES - Tuesdays 5:30-8:30 Directed By Peter Scoma
In the dark ages of modern rock music - the 2000’s - when the charts were awash with terrible bands with names that rhyme with Bicklefack, Cuddle of Crud, and Coldplay. Two bands emerged from that cuddle of crud and proved that you could still make good music. One brought back the classic sounds of 1970’s New York, while the other plumbs the synthy sounds of 80’s new wave. School Of Rock Port Jefferson pits these two bands in a fight to certain death when we present The Killers Vs. The Strokes.

BEST O’ THE 80’s **WILDWOOD SHOW**- Wednesdays 5:30-8:30 Directed By Peter Scoma
You remember the 80's, right? The big hair? The leg warmers? Communism? We'll have it all at WILDWOOD when School Of Rock Port Jeff presents A Tribute To The Big Fat 80's! Don't forget to bring your Aquanet.

FUNK & REGGAE **WILDWOOD SHOW**- Thursdays 5:30-8:30 Directed By Ryan McGovern
School Of Rock Port Jefferson and WILDWOOD will be One Nation Under A Groove at our Funk & Reggae show. We'll be jammin' out to tunes by Bob Marley, James Brown, Parliament-Funkadelic, and many more. Come get your groove on!

DAVID BOWIE**WILDWOOD SHOW** - Fridays 5:00-8:00 Directed By Patrick Brennan
David Bowie is a man of many musical personas. From hippie folkster to androgynous, apocalyptic space alien; to emotionally detached soul singing royalty, then to pop superstar and back again. Join School Of Rock Port Jefferson at WILDWOOD as we celebrate the life and work of the incomparable Starman waiting in the sky.

CBGB - Saturdays 10am-1pm Directed By Patrick Brennan
Opened in 1973 in the Bowery neighborhood of downtown Manhattan, CBGB became home to such legends as The Ramones, Blondie, The Talking Heads, Patti Smith, Television, and many more. These bands would come to define the sound of Rock music for generations. We pay tribute to the sounds and spirit of 70's American punk when School Of Rock Port Jefferson presents A Tribute To CBGB.

MOTORHEAD - Saturdays 1pm-4:00 Directed By Ryan McGovern
Bring your motorcycle jackets and your Ace Of Spades when School Of Rock Port Jefferson pays tribute to quite possibly the most rock 'n roll band to ever grace the earth: MOTÖRHEAD. Two hours and 20+ songs worth of mind-melting, ass-kicking, face-boiling (no pun intended) metal! \m/

Testimonials

  • “A great place for creative, talented, awesome kids. The SOR provides a safe environment for the kids to hang out with friends as the make music together. Best thing we did for our son!!! Thank you !!!!! ”
    — Maryann M., parent School of Rock Port Jefferson
  • “Like many kids, when I first came to School of Rock Port Jeff, I started with no stage or band experience on any instruments. I've never known what it's like to be on a stage or play in unison with other people. School of Rock accepted me in with constant smiles and good vibes everywhere. Since coming to SOR, I've not only seen myself grow musically, but socially. Calling people at SOR friendly would be an understatement. I've made irreplaceable friendships that I would never trade for ANYTHING. We all help each-other out and no-one get singled out. As a musician, I've grown tremendously. Being on stage and performing has become an incredible adrenaline rush for me, all while being incredibly confident and comfortable through the tons of programs and shows they offer. I'm blown away on how much my friends have improved throughout the seasons and the potential they have unlocked from themselves through School of Rock. Really, in general, School of Rock Port Jeff is an incredible place. I would recommend it to just about anyone who's even remotely interested. My experience here has been nothing short but amazing; and I'm positive I'm by far not the only one to think that. ”
    — Jordan S., student School of Rock Port Jefferson
  • “I wish I had School of Rock when I was growing up. ”
    — Nearly Every Parent Who Walks Through Our Doors
  • “It's just the most amazing place, it's somewhere you can go to get away from everything and have fun, make such awesome friends that you'll just love forever. The teaching is absolutely amazing, all the teachers are just amazing people and musicians, love this place! ”
    — Steven D., student School of Rock Port Jefferson
