Students learn, absorb, and perform iconic hits from some of history's greatest rock and roll performers including The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Van Halen, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and many more. • Fun, music, and education wrapped into one all-inclusive experience!

  • Our Rock 101 Program at School of Rock Mokena is focused on making the first steps of a young student’s journey both fun and successful. The days of mundane music instruction are over. At School of Rock Mokena, we believe that playing music together is the only real path to mastering an instrument and developing a true love for music.

In Rock 101, we focus our instruction on the one instrument that students have chosen to study. Whether we’re teaching scales, chords, notes, or time signatures, we put concepts in context so students understand how the principles they learn are applied to real music. Using some of the world’s most famous songs and infusing fun into every chord, Rock 101 allows Mokena students to enhance their skills and move on to our Performance Program.

School of Rock Mokena’s Rock 101 students can expect:

    • Weekly private music lessons on guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, and/or vocals
    • Weekly group rehearsals to reinforce basic concepts and skills in a band setting
    • A firm grasp of the fundamentals of technique and music theory
    • An understanding of what it means to play solo and in a group
    • Real knowledge gained through real fun!

  • School of Rock Mokena’s top students can audition for our most prestigious honor: the School of Rock AllStars Program. AllStars also get to share the stage with experienced, larger-than-life performers like Alice Cooper, Eddie Vedder, and Slash, to name a few. There is no better way for a star on the rise to get a taste for what professional music is really like.

School of Rock Mokena’s AllStars can expect:

  • At School of Rock Mokena, we know how to bring the world of music, and the fun that comes with it, to adults. We get our students playing and learning at rapid-fire speeds through real performances of their favorite songs, instead of your old traditional music instruction programs with piles of sheet music and hours of rote memorization. At School of Rock Mokena, the stage can be yours at any age.

Our adult students learn the fundamentals of music, including scales, chords, notes, progressions, and more, from real-world instruction through some of the most iconic songs and sounds in music history. Whatever your musical taste may be, our instructors know how to create a program just for you. Whether you’re seeking basic proficiency, a standing gig as the resident guitar player at parties, or future rock star status, School of Rock Mokena works with you to help you reach your goals.

Students in School of Rock Mokena’s Adult Program can expect:

    • Fast-paced instruction on the instrument of your choice: guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and/or vocals

    • A firm grasp of music theory and technique fundamentals, taught through your favorite music genre
    • Fun, instruction, and great progression of practical skills wrapped all into one!

  • School of Rock Mokena’s Rookies Program offers a gateway to understanding music for first and second graders. Using proprietary set-ups for guitar, bass, drums and keyboard, as well as other tools, we introduce our Rookies to music fundamentals in a fun way. The skills and passion for music that our Rookies learn prepares them for Rock 101 and a lifelong love of music.

With exercises, tools and games customized to their age group, our (geomodifer) Rookies learn the concepts of music theory, rhythm, pitch, form and dynamics as they play alongside their friends. We encourage our students to explore various instruments and play styles so they begin to understand how individual contributions form a band; even the best solo keyboard players or vocalists need to understand how an ensemble works.

All students in Mokena’s Rookies Program can expect:

    • Weekly group lessons using guitar, bass, keyboard and drums
    • Exposure to essential fundamentals like music theory, pitch and rhythm
    • A focus on teamwork and collaboration
    • An understanding of what it means to play solo and in a group
    • Fun combined with practical learning!

  • At School of Rock Mokena, we teach preschoolers in our Little Wing Program the creativity, confidence, and knowledge they need to grow into life-long lovers and practitioners of music. Music is the gateway to childrens’ growth, whether it’s in the form of great friendships from shared musical experiences or the joy of hearing an inspirational song for the first time.

Our Little Wing students at Mokena enjoy a unique variety of music-minded games based on some of the most popular music in rock and roll history. Through great music and a foundation of fun, our students refine their motor skills, coordination, pre-literacy, and group cooperation in a safe and inclusive environment.

Joey Karczewski honed his formidable musical talents in both Illinois and California. Raised in the south suburbs of Chicago, he began his singing career at the age of eleven, and by twenty-one, was also accomplished on guitar, drums, keyboards and bass. He does not consider his music theory studies at Moraine Valley College to be his only education. He understood early on that performing and interacting with an audience were just as large a part of music as the theory behind it. A multi-instrumentalist with tremendous charisma and a hunger for live performance, he spent several years in Los Angeles perfecting his stagecraft, performance and songwriting skills while working in the film industry. "Watching guys like Steven Tyler and Roger Waters was fascinating to me," he says, "because they understand how to turn it on when it counts. You have to be able to pull out the magic at the drop of a hat, whether you feel good or bad, tired or energetic. You have to deliver and do it when it counts, because an artist who can't will never be a professional." Last year, he performed live over 200 times both solo, and with various groups and ensembles. Joey is more comfortable holding a microphone than most people are holding a fork and knife. He makes his living as a professional musician. His dedication and professionalism have earned him not only his living, These are the same qualities he brings to his students every day at The School of Rock.

Eric Somers-Urrea has spent the majority of his life working hard to be the most versatile drummer/ percussionist possible. He recently graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Music Performance and studied classical music under his professors William Moersch and Ricardo Flores. While in attendance at the U of I Eric participated in a wide range of classical ensembles, world music ensembles, and even drumlines and in 2011 he was the recipient if the Edgard Varese Percussion Award for most outstanding undergraduate or graduate percussion student. Eric's true calling, however, is sitting behind the drumset. For most of his life now he has been performing behind the kit at venues large and small. His drumset experience ranges from jazz bands to latin groups to musical pit orchestras to local bands that play anything from indie rock to metal. Eric's newest project, Marina City, is an alternative rock band from Plainfield. Despite only being in existence since February of 2012 they already performed at prestigious venues across Illinois including the Canopy Club, The Metro, and a sold out show at Chicago's House of Blues. Whether it's live or in the studio, classical music or metal, Eric has made absolutely certain that he is prepared for every musical situation that arises.

Joe has played all kinds of music on the bass: pop, rock, industrial, metal, alternative, country, southern rock, 50's rock, rb, and blues. Inspired by Geddy Lee Stanley Clarke, for when those guys play, it can bring you to tears of joy'¦or just plain tears, depending upon your mood. Joe has written hundreds of songs, but most will never be heard, for they were written in study hall'¦two songs every 45 minutes. Joe can play bass, guitar, drums, and keyboards'¦but the bass is where the heart beats. He has played all over the country, playing all kinds of clubs, bars, fests, arenas, concert venues'¦for crowds both small and large. Joe's first foray into music was clarinet'¦practiced a bunch, reached mediocre, developed asthma, quit playing clarinet. Seemed logical. Joe then bought a drum set having no idea how to play. Tried to play melody on those drums, with no success. Figured out that it was rhythm instrument and played drums for 6 years. Taught himself keyboards along the way by memorizing a piano chord chart. Wrote all the instrument parts for an original band. Gave up the drums (and all that sweating that went with it) for bass guitar 28 years ago. Hasn't looked back.
