Programs

  • School of Rock Mokena's Performance Program is all about translating our students' abilities to play in the lesson room to performing for real on stage. In addition to refining their overall skill and proficiency as musicians, students learn what comes with being part of a band: teamwork, collaboration, and the special brand of fun that only comes from sharing awesome experiences with others.

Students learn, absorb, and perform iconic hits from some of history's greatest rock and roll performers including The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Van Halen, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and many more. No matter what they perform, our students will learn incredible skills and enjoy epic experiences that will last a lifetime.

All students in Mokena's Performance Program can expect:

    • Weekly private music lessons on guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, and/or vocals
    • Weekly band rehearsal to get students prepared for real shows
    • Real-life performances on stage at amazing venues
    • Advanced instruction in fundamentals such as stage performance, harmonies, musicianship, and more
    • Fun, music, and education wrapped into one all-inclusive experience!

  • Our Rock 101 Program at School of Rock Mokena is focused on making the first steps of a young student’s journey both fun and successful. The days of mundane music instruction are over. At School of Rock Mokena, we believe that playing music together is the only real path to mastering an instrument and developing a true love for music.

In Rock 101, we focus our instruction on the one instrument that students have chosen to study. Whether we’re teaching scales, chords, notes, or time signatures, we put concepts in context so students understand how the principles they learn are applied to real music. Using some of the world’s most famous songs and infusing fun into every chord, Rock 101 allows Mokena students to enhance their skills and move on to our Performance Program.

School of Rock Mokena’s Rock 101 students can expect:

    • Weekly private music lessons on guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, and/or vocals
    • Weekly group rehearsals to reinforce basic concepts and skills in a band setting
    • A firm grasp of the fundamentals of technique and music theory
    • An understanding of what it means to play solo and in a group
    • Real knowledge gained through real fun!

  • School of Rock Mokena’s top students can audition for our most prestigious honor: the School of Rock AllStars Program. Our AllStars represent the best of the best students from School of Rock’s entire global network of schools. With incredible musical aptitude, a knack for teamwork and incredible focus, today’s AllStars truly represent the future of rock and roll.

Each summer, our AllStars embark on an authentic concert tour to perform in jaw-dropping live shows across the country, including Red Rocks, Lollapalooza, Hangout Music Fest, NAMM, Gathering of the Vibes, and countless others. AllStars also get to share the stage with experienced, larger-than-life performers like Alice Cooper, Eddie Vedder, and Slash, to name a few. There is no better way for a star on the rise to get a taste for what professional music is really like.

School of Rock Mokena’s AllStars can expect:

    • Real-world performances where they can shine in their chosen medium: guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and/or vocals
    • A fast-paced tour experience with stage shows at legendary events and venues
    • To play with the best performers from School of Rock’s global community
    • The opportunity to rock out on stage with world-renowned artists
    • An epic rock experience like no other!

  • At School of Rock Mokena, we know how to bring the world of music, and the fun that comes with it, to adults. We get our students playing and learning at rapid-fire speeds through real performances of their favorite songs, instead of your old traditional music instruction programs with piles of sheet music and hours of rote memorization. At School of Rock Mokena, the stage can be yours at any age.

Our adult students learn the fundamentals of music, including scales, chords, notes, progressions, and more, from real-world instruction through some of the most iconic songs and sounds in music history. Whatever your musical taste may be, our instructors know how to create a program just for you. Whether you’re seeking basic proficiency, a standing gig as the resident guitar player at parties, or future rock star status, School of Rock Mokena works with you to help you reach your goals.

Students in School of Rock Mokena’s Adult Program can expect:

    • Fast-paced instruction on the instrument of your choice: guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and/or vocals
    • Weekly private instruction catered to your goals and level of proficiency
    • All-adult rehearsals to prepare for real performances in local venues
    • A firm grasp of music theory and technique fundamentals, taught through your favorite music genre
    • Fun, instruction, and great progression of practical skills wrapped all into one!

  • School of Rock Mokena’s Rookies Program offers a gateway to understanding music for first and second graders. Using proprietary set-ups for guitar, bass, drums and keyboard, as well as other tools, we introduce our Rookies to music fundamentals in a fun way. The skills and passion for music that our Rookies learn prepares them for Rock 101 and a lifelong love of music.

With exercises, tools and games customized to their age group, our Mokena Rookies learn the concepts of music theory, rhythm, pitch, form and dynamics as they play alongside their friends. We encourage our students to explore various instruments and play styles so they begin to understand how individual contributions form a band; even the best solo keyboard players or vocalists need to understand how an ensemble works.

All students in Mokena’s Rookies Program can expect:

    • Weekly group lessons using guitar, bass, keyboard and drums
    • Exposure to essential fundamentals like music theory, pitch and rhythm
    • A focus on teamwork and collaboration
    • An understanding of what it means to play solo and in a group
    • Fun combined with practical learning!

  • At School of Rock Mokena, we teach preschoolers in our Little Wing Program the creativity, confidence, and knowledge they need to grow into life-long lovers and practitioners of music. Music is the gateway to childrens’ growth, whether it’s in the form of great friendships from shared musical experiences or the joy of hearing an inspirational song for the first time.

Our Little Wing students at Mokena enjoy a unique variety of music-minded games based on some of the most popular music in rock and roll history. Through great music and a foundation of fun, our students refine their motor skills, coordination, pre-literacy, and group cooperation in a safe and inclusive environment.

Young rockers in Mokena’s Little Wing Program can expect:

    • Exploration of hand percussion and other tools to spark their imagination
    • Unique and engaging music games
    • Teamwork, cooperation, and group music activities
    • Fundamental skills for music and life

Cue the lights, the music, open the curtain! Kathy has been involved in theatre and music since the age of 12. She began her love of performance by participating in stage plays and expanded into musicals and tv commercials. Kathy earned roles in the Sound of Music, No No Nanette, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Kismet, George M, Funny Girl, Where’s Charley, High Button Shoes, How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying, Sorry Wrong Number, Curious Savage, and Carousel. Each show introduced new opportunities and challenges which helped build her skills on stage presence and performance techniques. Kathy had years of private vocal lessons with Dan Moore as well as vocal education at Roosevelt University; as a result she can sing classical, blues, pop ballads and power rock. After completing her degree at Loyola University, Kathy became the lead singer of Cat’s Eye, a Chicago-based cover band, in which she performs with her husband, Joe, who is currently the Music Director at School of Rock Mokena. For Kathy, music is, and always has been, a powerful force that gives meaning to each and every day. With such a dedication and passion, she is grateful to be able to share her experience and talents to teach a new generation of vocal students.

f you have the chance to see Joe perform on stage, you will witness firsthand Joe’s connection to the music, and how the bass seems to be a part of him.
Starting as a drummer in an original rock band Mercury, Joe began his career as a self-taught lyricist and songwriter.
Because Joe wrote most of the parts of these songs, inexorably, the siren call of the bass drew him in like a warm beacon on a frozen winter night.
Joe then studied under EADG author and bass master John Falstrom.
Joe is a National Award winning poet who strongly believes in the power of the right mixture of words and music.
He has played in front of thousands in large arenas, as well as more intimate venues.
He has shared the stage with such acts as Starship, Kansas, and The Buckinghams.
Joe studied audio, songwriting, and fiction writing at Columbia College.
He was part of the goth band The Dark Theater, whose original music appeared on MTV, as well as getting radio play overseas.
As a singer-songwriter who can play all the instruments, Joe ultimately turned down interest from a start-up record label. Some of these songs eventually showed up in Joe’s all original rock band Gemini Justice.
His resonating low singing voice is a melodic compliment to the powerhouse vocals of his wife Kathy, who is the Gm of the School of Rock Mokena.
This Chicago-based cover band, Catseye, has been playing clubs for almost 20 years.
After discovering School of Rock, Joe became a firm believer in this unique school that did not exist in his youth.
He is proud to help the next generation live the dream.

Eric Somers-Urrea has spent the majority of his life working hard to be the most versatile drummer/ percussionist possible. He recently graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Music Performance and studied classical music under his professors William Moersch and Ricardo Flores. While in attendance at the U of I Eric participated in a wide range of classical ensembles, world music ensembles, and even drumlines and in 2011 he was the recipient if the Edgard Varese Percussion Award for most outstanding undergraduate or graduate percussion student. Eric's true calling, however, is sitting behind the drumset. For most of his life now he has been performing behind the kit at venues large and small. His drumset experience ranges from jazz bands to latin groups to musical pit orchestras to local bands that play anything from indie rock to metal. Eric's newest project, Marina City, is an alternative rock band from Plainfield. Despite only being in existence since February of 2012 they already performed at prestigious venues across Illinois including the Canopy Club, The Metro, and a sold out show at Chicago's House of Blues. Whether it's live or in the studio, classical music or metal, Eric has made absolutely certain that he is prepared for every musical situation that arises.

Anne Debre is a musician, producer, and educator living and playing in Chicago. She holds a Bachelors of Music degree in Performance with a concentration in Vocal Jazz. Anne has been singing since she could talk, began taking classical piano lessons at age 5, and began to write original music not long after. Anne picked up the Clarinet at age 11, and pursued it seriously for 7 years. At age 12, she began to play guitar (as well as a bit of bass guitar), writing/recording songs and playing for fun. Her career began as an instrumentalist, which blessed her with the ability to understand music theory and read music from an early age--it wasn't until High School that she joined the choral program and began to seriously pursue singing, even though it was something she had always done with no instruction. Anne has a plethora of experience playing and performing at many notable venues on many instruments. Music has always and will always be the most important part of her life. She is thankful for every moment she is allowed to share her love of music with the world.

From the great begins, music has been a big part in Nathan Van Dyke’s life. As a child Nathan has been following a dream, a very long dream to become the best that he can be, as a songwriter, performer, artist, and most important a musician. Nathan has been playing guitar for 17 years, and hasn’t been slowing down one bit. Nathan started playing guitar early in 1999/2000, but became strongly involved shortly after his father died. Nathan stated, “my father really wanted me to play music, so that’s what I did, and I haven’t stopped since.

Since then Nathan has played in 2 bands since 2007, Bleed for the Fallen (2007) was the more successful of the 2. Playing over 1000+ shows, 2 EP’s, a bunch of great memories and most importantly all original music. The band disbanded in late 2014, due to many reasons. “Everything happens for a reason”. Nathan, didn’t stop there, oh no. During the Bleed for the Fallen years, Nathan enrolled in 2010 at Tribeca Flashpoint Academy, where he received his Associates degree in Audio Engineering & Film/ Video Game sound designing. After graduating in 2012, he went on to run sound at many different clubs in the Chicago land area, and recorded many bands at his home studio “Lady Luck Studios” in Grant Park Illinois.

Nathan has been working for the School of Rock, as a guitar instructor and now audio engineer as well. Nathan teaches all styles of music ranging from, rock, country, blues, jazz, to a little classical. Some of Nathans inspirations include Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and many more.

“ This is what hard work and dedication can lead you to, a dream.” – Nathan Van Dyke. Nathan is a prime example that if you work hard, and don’t let anything get in your way to can reach any level of success in music and most importantly your dreams.
