In Rock 101, students select one instrument to study, and we begin teaching fundamentals: scales, chords, notes, time signatures, and all the rest. • School of Rock Mason’s Rookies Program is designed for first and second graders to provide a fun introduction to music fundamentals. Among other tools, we use proprietary setups for guitar, bass, drums and keyboard to provide a gateway to understanding music. The skills and passion for music that we teach our students gets them ready for Rock 101 and a lasting appreciation for music.

Our Mason Rookies learn the fundamental concepts of pitch, rhythm, form and dynamics with age-appropriate exercises, tools and games. We encourage our students to explore a variety of instruments and play styles so they can get familiar with all parts of the musical landscape; even the most incredible solo guitar players or drummers need to understand how the rest of the band works together.

    • Weekly group lessons using guitar, bass, keyboard and drums
    • Exposure to essential fundamentals like music theory, pitch and rhythm

With a deep love for music from a very early age, Carl has been performing professionally in different local bands for 15 years. His high school cover band, The Rockefellers, had their first paid gig when Carl was just 15. They performed for a festival at Boldface Park in 1997, and from that point on Carl knew what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. He comes from a musical family; his mother Barbara was a featured vocalist for the Cincinnati May Festival Youth Chorus and performed for Max Rudolf's retirement from the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. In high school, Carl participated in the Senior Choir, the Show Choir, and played bass guitar in the Jazz band. He was also the first student at Western Hills High School that was permitted to sing lead vocal while performing with the Jazz band. After high school, Carl attended the Recording Workshop in Chillicothe, OH. There he became a certified sound engineer, learning skills that would help him record compositions that he and his sister Alison Shepard created. In 2001 they formed an original band called entheos. The sibling duo entheos has released 2 studio albums, and they are currently recording a 3rd album and making music videos. Over the years Carl has performed with several cover bands including The Rockefellers, The T-Sly Band, and 3 Day Rule. He has pulled multiple duties in each group, playing bass and guitar and singing lead. He is currently performing multiple solo/duo acoustic gigs around the Tri-State area. You can find his schedule here on Facebook. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Carl-G-Acoustic/273736686011046 Carl has a sincere passion for teaching music and has been working as a guitar/bass instructor for six years. He is very enthusiastic about sharing the joy of music with students of all ages, and is thrilled about being given the opportunity to further his career by participating with the School of Rock. "I'm so excited about the potential that the School of Rock will have, and I hope to help build a stellar reputation along with the other instructors", says Carl.Carl G grew up in Sayler Park. His initial "G", stands for Gracely, a family name for which the main street of Sayler Park was named. "It's a nice feeling to know my family changed the history of Sayler Park. I aspire to have an impact that great someday", states Carl. His art, and his talents are unique. From his vocal stylings to his original work with his sister Alison, Carl truly is one of a kind. Check him out in the local music scene, in entheos, or see his videos on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/user/entheosband

Testimonials

  • “I can’t tell you what an enriching experience this has been for our whole family and especially for Josh. The instructors there were so much more than teachers for Josh, they were his idols and his role models. It has been an amazing time, and I know that as Josh gets older he will look back on all the memories he made at the SOR fondly. You have created something special there, and I hope you understand what an impact your efforts have had on the lives of these children.Thank you for everything! ”
    — Tim Gallagher, Father of School of Rock Denver student
  • “Carlson's time at School of Rock helped her recruit most of her current bandmates. It spurred her to apply to Berklee which, unlike other colleges that offer music majors geared mainly toward classical and jazz, offered the opportunity to train as a well-rounded musician. ”
    — Chelsea Carson, student from Long Valley School of Rock
  • “School of Rock is the best thing we have done for our three children. They learn self-confidence, teamwork, and musicianship in an environment that is safe and free of the typical age-barrier restrictions that are often inherent in other student activities. The youngest and oldest kids in the school work together and everyone is an equal on stage. I wish other youth activities were as welcoming. ”
    — Tony C., parent, Great Valley, PA
  • “School of Rock has helped develop my daughter's self confidence. She just lights up when she is on stage. I just love watching and seeing her growth as a person and as a musician. SOR is her second family. ”
    — Lori H., parent, Downingtown, PA
