Instructor: Vocals, Guitar, Bass, Keys, Drums Trevor started in music as a piano student at age 7. He quickly moved on to playing guitar and drums, joining his youth group band at the age of 13. Trevor joined a band with his friends as a Freshman in high school and went on to record 3 albums, do a national tour, and play all over Texas opening for bands such as Chevelle, etc. As an adult, he joined a cover band on the side and has played lots of shows all around the Houston area. He loved his time working as a touring musician, but decided to make a change for his own personal growth. In 2013, Trevor had the honor of singing the national anthem at a Houston Dynamo professional soccer game. As an instructor at School of Rock, Trevor's positive energy is reflected in the love his students have for him and his teaching style. He enjoys all different types of music, being influenced by bands such as Muse, Incubus, Silver Chair and Umphrey's McGee. Motto: 'To infinity and beyond.' Interesting Fact: Trevor's actually a lefty but prefers to play guitar and bass as a righty.

Matt is a guitar, vocal, drum, bass and keys instructor at Kingwood. He has been a student in the School of Rock for four years prior to becoming an instructor. He held an in-depth internship at School of Rock Kingwood for three years, during which time, he learned first hand the ins and outs of the program. He participated in Dean's List for three years and toured the central US twice in the summer of 2016 with both the School of Rock Summer Tour and School of Rock AllStars.

Matt has a wide range of musical abilities and tastes. He is well versed in guitar, vocals, drums, bass, and keyboard, all of which he learned through the School of Rock program. He also played cello in his school’s orchestra for 4 years, giving him a background in classical music. He currently teaches all of these instruments across three School of Rock locations.

His taste ranges from alternative rock such as Radiohead, Jeff Buckley and Soundgarden, to metal such as Tool and Deftones, to the more "out there" side of things like Phish, Pink Floyd, and Frank Zappa. Matt has a strong sense of musical technicality but believes that feel and a good ear will always come out above sheer technicality.

Matt has played shows at venues and events across the country ranging from small clubs and bars to Lollapalooza in Chicago. Matt's creative talents and influences are shown in his band Desense. In Desense, he acts as the lead guitarist, lead vocalist, lyricist, and central songwriter. Desense is an alternative rock band showing tinges of Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, Deftones and The Mars Volta with their own flares of improvisation, odd time signatures, and clever melody. They are currently playing shows in and around the Houston area and are focusing on writing for their upcoming EP and future full-length recordings.

Matt started playing guitar as his first instrument after being inspired by the heavy metal band Metallica. Focusing on the rhythm guitar player James Hetfield, he developed a strong sense of complex song structure and right hand sensibility early on. After studying every Metallica song known to man, he moved on to the 90s alternative rock scene. He became intrigued by acts such as Tool, Alice in Chains, and Nirvana, due to the large amount of emotional expression found in the styles of those bands and others like them. While studying Tool, he developed an understanding of odd time and polyrhythm and surrounded himself with these complex concepts. After working with these concepts, he moved his interest to drummers like Jon Theodore of The Mars Volta and Jon Fishman of Phish to focus on feel and groove. Through this study, he has developed a strong sense of groove and technical finesse.

Along the way, Matt also stumbled upon the Vermont-based cult jam band Phish, who quickly became one of his favorite groups. Awe-struck by Trey Anastasio's unique, improvisational and experimental style of guitar playing, he studied their work tirelessly and was (and still is) constantly honing and adding to his improvisational concepts. Phish's jam based style has also bled into his original work.

Today, Matt has taught at four School of Rock locations; Kingwood, The Woodlands, Sugar Land, and Champion Forest. His years in School of Rock have given him a complete understanding of the program and have inspired him to pass these lessons on to his students.

You will find Matt playing an instrument or with a mic in his hand whenever you’re in the school. He loves to teach and inspire others with his knowledge and enthusiasm for music and relates well with students, having started his musical journey with us.

Testimonials

  • “School of Rock has not only taught my daughter how to play music, but has also helped her build confidence and love herself. The staff, students and environment at SoR can be felt every time you walk in, you can tell everyone loves what they are doing. The staff members are mentors that the students look up to. They have taught my daughter so much about music, how to play instruments and the courage to get on stage in front of an audience and sing. My daughter suffered from Major Depressive Disorder and was hospitalized two months prior to starting SoR, I have never felt so helpless as a parent seeing my child feel so depressed, withdrawn and isolated - not wanting to ever come out of her room. Now, she has turned into this PROUD, Fun Loving, HAPPY, Out Spoken Individual. Because of School of Rock, our daughter is always smiling, laughing and enjoying life. SoR will always be highly recommended to anyone I know who has children because I have seen how it has changed our lives!!! ”
    - Parent, Kingwood, TX
  • “I love the fact that the kids feel like true musicians and are a part of a band since day one. No other music school offers that. My son's been attending School of Rock since they opened in our area, and everyone there makes a great effort to keep him challenged and motivated. It's a great place for him to learn, grow, have fun and make new friends! ”
-- Maru, Parent, The Woodlands, TX
  • “Great individual lessons. The instructors really push the kids. The group lessons allow the kids to bond over a shared love of music and learn how to work together.”
-- Susan, Parent, The Woodlands, TX
  • “Thank you from our whole family for always being understanding and "making it rock" all the time! School of Rock has provided a safe haven for our daughter that has been highlighted even more lately. We graduated from our elementary school program (aged out) and we have had rejection after rejection for accepting our daughter for who she is. You guys always are ALWAYS welcoming, encouraging and supportive of where she is and what she can accomplish. Even in specialized settings, our daughter feels "less than" but she can always be herself with you guys and that's unbelievably awesome! Thank you for being genuinely caring and holding our daughter together when the rest of the world tears her up. She has been so happy at School of Rock and we look forward to many more years with you. ”
