Sean Briskey was surprised with a guitar at the age of 11 by his father and has not looked back since. Beginning with a year or two of lessons in blues and classic rock, Sean quickly gained an ear and a love for multiple styles of music. While most guitarists in high school are discovering Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and the Beatles, Sean found himself doing quite the opposite. His first band Lobster Newberg was an original progressive rock outfit, playing complex songs with odd meters and meandering passages. Drawing influences from the likes of King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Yes, and Frank Zappa, Sean co-wrote and recorded his first album when he was just 16. As his musical taste grew, so did his motivation to learn more. He joined his high school's jazz band and began learning the art of improvisation. By the time he was a senior in high school, he had performed at many notable venues and even shared shows with bands such as The Alan Parsons Project and The Ides Of March. After just one semester of college, Sean switched his history major to music after realizing where his true passion was. Studying under Chicago jazz giants Kyle Asche, Pat Fleming, Anthony Molinaro, and Victor Garcia, he gained a tight grasp on music theory and multiple genres/styles.Seanhas experience teaching players of all ages/skill levels and aspires to see his students succeed and have a blast while doing so. Currently with a bachelor's degree in music/jazz guitar from Loyola University Chicago, Sean gigs frequently around the Chicagoland area while teaching at the Glen Ellyn and Chicago School of Rock locations.

Hey! I'm Stevenson Valentor, up and coming Chicago drummer specializing under the umbrellas of funk, jazz, and rock. I'm currently banging out a bachelor's degree in psychology at Loyola University Chicago, while regularly playing shows with my band Gramps the Vamp, and playing any pick-up or subbing gigs that come my way. When I'm not practicing, performing, listening, or writing, I'm usually reading about growth and spirituality. Meditating is a regular practice with me, and throughout each of my daily activities I seek, find, or otherwise make big picture meaning. School of Rock has been a blast these past few months and I'm much looking forward to the future!

Laura Lopardo's immersion into a life revolving around music began at a very young age. Some of her earliest memories are of her parents singing and playing together late into the night, and she joined in on the top harmony as soon as she could. Talent shows and family gatherings with her parents and sister were next. She began studying music in earnest by 7, and by 12 was studying classical and opera music. She went on to pursue a music major in college and began honing her "rock" skills in local open mics and cover bands. The rest, as they say, is history - whether playing with The Get in a local spot down the street, a musical theater stage, or touring the country with The Godfathers, Laura's life is all music, all the time. She couldn't be happier to have the opportunity to teach others to do what she loves at School of Rock.

Andy knew he had to be a drummer ever since the night he saw the great Buddy Rich show up Animal on the Muppet Show. From then on, he could often be found behind his brother's red sparkle drumkit tinkering away. This was the launchpad that propelled him into a life in music. He Earned his BA in Music from Western Michigan University, where he studied drums under legendary jazz drummer Billy Hart, as well as performed in the University's Big Band, Marching Band, and drumset choir. These days Andy plays often in and around Chicago and has toured the country extensively. He is the drummer for the band Dastardly, the Kalamazoo band Circus McGurkis, one of the founding members of live band karaoke in Chicago and has recorded on a dozen records. Along with playing and teaching drums, Andy spends his extra time as a luthier, restoring violins, violas, and cellos.

Seniors from Sunrise Senior Living joined about 45 preschoolers at Arbor View Elementary School for a music program called Little Wing, presented by the Glen Ellyn School of Rock. Grooving to James Brown's "I Feel Good," Sunrise resident June Frank got up and danced, clapping and high-fiving with several the youngsters. "I enjoyed it," she said. "I had a good time. It's always nice to be with the little kids." The youngsters and seniors also sang, danced and played instruments to rock classics such as "Magic Bus" by the Who, "Get Off My Cloud" by the Rolling Stones and "We Will Rock You" by Queen. Little Wing Director Ella Duda says the program is designed to help preschoolers foster cognitive and motor skills. She said students started making monthly visits to Sunrise's Glen Ellyn facility beginning in June, and it seems to help both the kids and the seniors. "It's a really good way for (the seniors) to keep their mind young with music." Duda said. "They enjoy having the kids around." Mary Shafer, activities and volunteer coordinator with Sunrise Senior Living, says the kids help brighten the residents' day. "It changes their mood," she said. "Their day is uplifted and exciting."

Testimonials

  • “I can’t tell you what an enriching experience this has been for our whole family and especially for Josh. The instructors there were so much more than teachers for Josh, they were his idols and his role models. It has been an amazing time, and I know that as Josh gets older he will look back on all the memories he made at the SOR fondly. You have created something special there, and I hope you understand what an impact your efforts have had on the lives of these children.Thank you for everything!”
    — Tim Gallagher, Father of School of Rock Denver student
  • “Carlson's time at School of Rock helped her recruit most of her current bandmates. It spurred her to apply to Berklee which, unlike other colleges that offer music majors geared mainly toward classical and jazz, offered the opportunity to train as a well-rounded musician. ”
    — Chelsea Carson, student from Long Valley School of Rock
  • “School of Rock is the best thing we have done for our three children. They learn self-confidence, teamwork, and musicianship in an environment that is safe and free of the typical age-barrier restrictions that are often inherent in other student activities. The youngest and oldest kids in the school work together and everyone is an equal on stage. I wish other youth activities were as welcoming. ”
    — Tony C., parent, Great Valley, PA
  • “School of Rock has helped develop my daughter's self confidence. She just lights up when she is on stage. I just love watching and seeing her growth as a person and as a musician. SOR is her second family. ”
    — Lori H., parent, Downingtown, PA
