17 Twin Cities teens lived out their dream is summer as they toured the American Heartland, performing five rock and roll concerts over five nights in five different cities. The teens, ranging in age from 13-18, are all students at the St Paul School of Rock or the Eden Prairie School of Rock. In order to participate in the tour, students auditioned for three local, professional musicians, a local show promoter and the Schools' owner, Stacey Marmolejo. Judges included Al Church- guitarist and vocalist for BBGuns, Adam Azra'el - Vocals, Guitar, Percussion with Human Empire, Leon Lombardo - session drummer and local show promoter, Nick Osberg of OzEnterprizes.'There wasn't a limit to the number of students we would take on tour,' said the schools' owner, Marmolejo. 'If the student met the qualifications, then they were invited on the tour. ''Students were judged on their command of their instrument, their stage presence and their musicianship,' said Adam Azra'el who ultimately served as the tour's manager. 'And I'd put the students who went on this tour up against any professional band.'Once chosen, the students were assigned their songs, which they learned on their own. About eight weeks prior to leaving, the band began weekly rehearsals to tighten their performance as a group. Then, on June 23, 2014 they stepped on the tour bus in front of the St. Paul School of Rock, excited but uncertain about what lie ahead. Six hours later, they pulled into their hotel in Omaha NE, dropped off their suitcases, changed clothes, grabbed some pizza at a local pizza joint and headed to The Waiting Room for sound check and their first gig of the tour. A small but supportive crowd cheered them throughout their 45-minute set. As good musicians do, they stayed at the club to watch the other bands on the lineup that night. Then it was off to the hotel, for a short night's sleep and then back on the bus. From there it was Kansas City, St. Louis, Chicago and Milwaukee before coming back to the Twin Cities. Imagine the story they'll each tell when the teacher says, 'What did YOU do this summer?'

Students from the School of Rock, located in Eden Prairie and St. Paul, performed at the Progressive International Motorcycle Shows Feb. 6 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Riders and motorcycle enthusiasts took a break from looking at bikes and enjoyed two sets of classic rock songs covered by the teenage musicians. While some band members may not be old enough to get their driver's license, the event is still an exciting chance to perform live, according to students. 'This is our second time performing at this event,' guitarist Owen Bacskai said, 'and we love it.'The band performed classics such as 'Godzilla' by Blue Oyster Cult, 'Heartbreaker' by Pat Benatar and 'Low Rider' by War. School of Rock is known for its rock concerts but the school doesn't teach music lessons to put on concerts; it puts on concerts to teach music lessons. Perhaps the biggest lesson yet is on the horizon as School of Rock Eden Prairie and School of Rock St Paul team together to perform their first major FUNDRAISING concert. School of Rock, the premier performance-based music education program in the world, continually seeks ways to challenge their students to strive for more. This Spring their local students, ages 8 '“ 18, will be put to the test as they perform side by side with some of Minnesota's most notable professional musicians at BEST OF MINNESOTA. 'The concept of having our students perform with local pros was launched in our Portland Oregon School of Rock several years ago and it has become an annual 'must-attend' concert for music fans in the northwestern city,' explained Regional Director/Franchise Owner Stacey Marmolejo. 'I don't believe Portland's music scene has anything on the Twin Cities so I've invited the Twin Cities School of Rock student musicians to perform a concert that rivals that produced in Portland.' School of Rock not only teaches music and performance, but also teaches students to be responsible musicians. One of those responsibilities includes using their talent to give back to the community. The professional musicians who join the students on stage will be excellent role models in this regard. School of Rock Twin Cities Regional Manager, Nate Beck, is in discussions with more than a dozen of the Twin Cities most iconic musicians and expects to begin announcing the lineup in the next two-three days. 'I'll do my part to bring you an incredible lineup and I'd like to challenge local music fans to join forces with us to not only create a mind-blowing event but also to raise an unprecedented amount of funds for the local non-profits we ultimately partner with,' said Beck. 'Every dollar from ticket sales will go to local non-profits.' For more information on BEST OF MINNESOTA, visit BestofMNMusic.com
