About School of Rock Cresskill

Welcome to School of Rock Cresskill—a haven for aspiring musicians who love rock n’ roll. We believe live performance is the most fun and effective way to teach an instrument, which is why we get kids playing on stage as quickly as possible. Our classes are tailored to all age groups and levels of proficiency, and instructors are passionate about creating a legacy of music by helping students succeed in music and beyond.

We also believe that music is more than a solo act. That’s why School of Rock Cresskill teaches kids to play alone and as part of a team. This approach promotes accountability, speeds up the learning process, and fosters an inclusive community of rockers in Cresskill. Students are not only learning an instrument—they’re making friends, building confidence, and becoming better people.

The days of traditional instruction with piles of sheet music are over. At School of Rock Cresskill, we believe that playing real music is the only path to proficiency and a true appreciation for music.

In Rock 101, students select one instrument to study, and we begin teaching fundamentals: scales, chords, notes, time signatures, and all the rest. Our unique approach to music instruction teaches our students vital fundamentals through songs they know and love, not rote memorization. With real musical context in a fun environment, we give all of our students the knowledge they need to really pursue their passion for music.

  • School of Rock Cresskill’s Rookies Program is designed for first and second graders to provide a fun introduction to music fundamentals. Among other tools, we use proprietary setups for guitar, bass, drums and keyboard to provide a gateway to understanding music. The skills and passion for music that we teach our students gets them ready for Rock 101 and a lasting appreciation for music.

Our Cresskill Rookies learn the fundamental concepts of pitch, rhythm, form and dynamics with age-appropriate exercises, tools and games. We encourage our students to explore a variety of instruments and play styles so they can get familiar with all parts of the musical landscape; even the most incredible solo guitar players or drummers need to understand how the rest of the band works together.

All students in Cresskill’s Rookies Program can expect:

    • Weekly group lessons using guitar, bass, keyboard and drums
    • Exposure to essential fundamentals like music theory, pitch and rhythm
    • A focus on teamwork and collaboration
    • An understanding of what it means to play solo and in a group
    • Fun combined with practical learning!

Music is the gateway to childrens’ growth, whether it’s in the form of great friendships from shared musical experiences or the joy of hearing an inspirational song for the first time.

VP Operations, Music Director, National All-Star Director Art Lima has dedicated his life to music. He began his musical journey at age 9 and started on his first instrument - the trumpet, where he learned to read music and gain a basic understanding of theory which provided a foundation that has stayed with him always. Growing up with a classically trained conservatory pianist mother, the encouragement of his pursuit of music was always there, and soon his love of guitar began, which also led to mastering of other instruments over the years.

A University of Connecticut alumnus, Art studied music there before delving into a career of 15+ years as an original and cover band lead guitarist before joining School of Rock full-time.

Although involved with several recording and performing projects with bands such as Lazy Sunday and Rhythm Method, his most notable project was THE ZONE - a Philadelphia-based band whose touring schedule featured them in front of hundreds of people every week in major metropolitan areas, shore points, and resorts up and down the east coast, playing thousands of stages, venues, and stadiums, with Art as lead guitarist and backing vocalist. Performances included NFL pregame and halftime shows as the contracted band for The Washington Redskins, and opening act for notable bands and artists such as Jimmy Buffet and Fuel.

Transitioning out of touring, Art has worked with his wife, Jamie (School of Rock instructor and GM) for the past couple of years on their original collaboration in the studio. Forming together their independent record label OzoneBaby Records, their band FATE28 released an August 2011 debut album Experimental Tendencies, which was featured in Guitar World Magazine's March 2012 "Introducing" section as a promising new artist release.

Art honed in on another passion over the course of creating the album, which is working on the recording side as a producer.

Art is excited to share his knowledge and skills with students at School of Rock in the newly-constructed studio facility, outfitted with the latest Pro Tools technology and software. He is a dedicated teacher who has inspired and positively-influenced so many who have had the opportunity to work with him.

In the Summer Art keeps busy as a National All-Star Tour Director for School of Rock USA, rockin' to raise money for great charitable organizations while touring and playing famous clubs, venues, and festivals like Lollapalooza. The 'Rock The House' tours have raised proceeds to benefit Ronal McDonald House Charities all over the country, and 'Love Hope Strength' finds bone marrow donors raising awareness with the audience members at the All-Star shows, and matched over a dozen bone barrow donors from last year's All-Star tour to help in the fight against cancer!

Art also jams with notable artists at various School of Rock promotional events - most recently, on-stage as guitarist on "Jellybelly" by The Smashing Pumpkins with their original drummer Jimmy Chamberlin (Smashing Pumpkins, Zwan) at Chicago's Montrose Room 2014; and as drummer on-stage with Earl Slick (New York Dolls, David Bowie), Jim Peterik, Slim Jim Phantom (Stray Cats), and Eric Bloom (Blue Oyster Cult) in Milwaukee 2013.

Since jammin' out to Green Day's "Welcome To Paradise" in the backseat of a car at age 3, Francesca knew that music had to be the main focus of her life.

Francesca graduated from Bloomfield College with a BA in Music Technology in 2015. During her time in school, she held internships with entertainment companies such as Bergen PAC and The Syndicate, where she went on to work as a Marketing Coordinator before joining the SoR team.

In terms of creating music, Francesca was the vocalist for the band A Verbal Equinox who gained local recognition for winning the Next Big Thing competition at Webster Hall and performing with an impressive list of national touring acts including Ice Nine Kills, The Birthday Massacre, D.R.U.G.S. and Our Last Night. With A Verbal Equinox, Francesca recorded the album "The Ringmaster Is Pleased To Introduce..." and played many insane and very crowd-interactive shows. She also released an experimental EP this past May under the moniker "Cheska & Friends".

She also plays ukulele sometimes and is also an entertainment promotions consultant, graphic designer, writer and live music enthusiast. You can usually find her getting stoked about shows and avocados.

Charlie Kessenich decided to play drums at the age of twelve when he first heard John Bonham's thunderous groove on 'Immigrant Song' by Led Zeppelin. This and a diverse combination of Paul Simon in the car, Prince on his toy radio, and Ravel from his mother's piano, set Kessenich on a musical path from which he would never stray. Throughout high school he had the good fortune of studying with greats Jackie Santos (Tavares) and Richie Barshay (Herbie Hancock). From this befuddled world of rock, jazz, neo-classical, tribal rhythms, and city sounds, Kessenich has formulated a unique and highly versatile style. After playing about as much as one could in Boston, as well as touring the west coast and Japan, Kessenich moved to Brooklyn to pursue more creative/serious endeavors. He currently plays in numerous groups around the city on multiple instruments. Kessenich recently recorded his first full-length record as a bass player and is currently composing incessantly for his upcoming projects as a leader.

Devon is a singer/songwriter who fell in love with music, when she sang her first solo at a school play. Soon after listening to her parents record collection would introduce her to the soul of the Stylistics, the heart of Queen, the mind of Billie Holiday, and her Latin roots of Hector Lavoe. Music became an essential part of her life and at the age of 9 she began vocal training with Romanian opera singer Renee Corenne. While building her voice and confidence through the years, it also gave her the push to audition and participate in the choir and dramatic arts programs at school. This path led her to the televised NJN Hispanic youth showcase were she was a finalist performing the song smile by Charlie Chaplin. Her voice gained local recognition in her young adolescents, and she started honing in on writing her own songs and recording them. Devon is currently a songwriter for Hookzandbridges.com were she writes and sings for various artists. She also is working on her own album set to release in 2016. Devon loves teaching at the School of Rock and working with such a talented staff. She believes music is the universal language and possessing the ability to share that knowledge with our youth is absolutely beautiful!

Michael Reid has been playing guitar and performing music for the past 25 years. At age 16, he joined his first band, which gained local notoriety for winning a talent search held by the producer of The Kinks. Over the next few years he went on to elevate the sound of many other area bands, bringing his unique style to each project, and opening for such acts as Twisted Sister, Ben Folds, and Gavin Degraw. Feeling confined by the local music scene at the time, he branched out and landed a gig playing guitar for the incredibly talented Regina Spektor. Michael joined Regina on her U.S. and European tours supporting her acclaimed album, 'Begin to Hope'. Along the way he also appeared with Regina performing her hit songs "Fidelity", "On The Radio", and "Better" on TV shows including The Tonight Show, Last Call w/ Carson Daly, The Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Good Morning America, and Friday Night with Jonathan Ross in the United Kingdom, and has played large festivals such as Coachella and Bonnaroo. In addition, Michael recorded an EP with Regina entitled "Live in California 2006", and worked with producer David Kahne on a recording of her song "Better". In 2008, Michael joined up with Geffen/Interscope recording artist Matt White as his lead guitarist, touring the U.S. and Canada playing arenas as direct support for Sheryl Crow as well as opening for legendary artists Elvis Costello, BB King, and Counting Crows at PBS Soundstage, which aired on AXStv recently in 2013. Mike Caminiti is a drum instructor from Westwood, New Jersey who has been playing the drums passionately for the past 20 years. Mike started working at School of Rock in 2013. Whether it be concert band, jazz band, marching band, playing in the "pit" at school musicals and starting his own musical projects, Mike took every opportunity to be involved in drums during his school career. After graduating high school, he religiously continued to make music a part of his everyday life from jamming with different musicians to session drumming to playing in local rock bands. Mike is a primarily self-taught drummer with a large catalog of style influences, ranging from classic rock, progressive, jazz, hip-hop, punk, pop and electronic music. Some of his most influential musical acts are Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Mars Volta, Miles Davis, King Crimson and Mahavishnu Orchestra. Testimonials

  • “School of Rock has taught me how to perform in public with self-confidence. ”
    — Dan, 18, Downingtown, PA
  • “School of Rock. The best music school anywhere. This whole idea of getting kids not just taking lessons and learning notes and chords, but learning songs and playing with other young musicians, and getting out on stage… I was so impressed that my daughter Cheyenne goes to School of Rock on Long Island. ”
    — Dee Snider, Twisted Sister
  • “You want your kid to be passionate about something, whether it be sports, scouts, dance or whatever. School of Rock does this for my son. We have discovered a talent we didn't know he had. My son would live at School of Rock if he could. We’ve already recommended the program to several friends. ”
    — Susan Snyder, Clifton, VA
  • “Our son explored many other extra-curricular activities prior to SOR, and no other activity was able to keep his interest. He has been challenged with new material, gained a foundation in theory and songwriting, as well as learned how to work in a group with other students to put on phenomenal rock 'n roll concerts in real" concert venues." ”
