  • Our Rock 101 Program at School of Rock Chatham is focused on making the first steps of a young student’s journey both fun and successful. The days of mundane music instruction are over. At School of Rock Chatham, we believe that playing music together is the only real path to mastering an instrument and developing a true love for music.

In Rock 101, we focus our instruction on the one instrument that students have chosen to study. Whether we’re teaching scales, chords, notes, or time signatures, we put concepts in context so students understand how the principles they learn are applied to real music. Using some of the world’s most famous songs and infusing fun into every chord, Rock 101 allows Chatham students to enhance their skills and move on to our Performance Program.

Our adult students learn the fundamentals of music, including scales, chords, notes, progressions, and more, through some of the most iconic songs and sounds in music history. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of rock ‘n roll or a metal-loving head-banger at home in the mosh pit, our teachers know how to best connect your love for music with a passion for learning it.

    • Fun, instruction, and a great progression of practical skills wrapped all into one!

  • School of Rock Chatham’s Rookies Program is designed for first and second graders to provide a fun introduction to music fundamentals. Among other tools, we use proprietary setups for guitar, bass, drums and keyboard to provide a gateway to understanding music. The skills and passion for music that we teach our students gets them ready for Rock 101 and a lasting appreciation for music.

Our Chatham Rookies learn the fundamental concepts of pitch, rhythm, form and dynamics with age-appropriate exercises, tools and games. We encourage our students to explore a variety of instruments and play styles so they can get familiar with all parts of the musical landscape; even the most incredible solo guitar players or drummers need to understand how the rest of the band works together.

All students in Chatham’s Rookies Program can expect:

    • Weekly group lessons using guitar, bass, keyboard and drums
    • Exposure to essential fundamentals like music theory, pitch and rhythm
    • A focus on teamwork and collaboration
    • An understanding of what it means to play solo and in a group
    • Fun combined with practical learning!

Music is the gateway to childrens’ growth, whether it’s in the form of great friendships from shared musical experiences or the joy of hearing an inspirational song for the first time.

Our Little Wing students at Chatham enjoy a unique variety of music-minded games based on some of the most popular music in rock and roll history. Art Lima has dedicated his life to music. He began his musical journey at age 9 and started on his first instrument - the trumpet, where he learned to read music and gain a basic understanding of theory which provided a foundation that has stayed with him always. Growing up with a classically trained conservatory pianist mother, the encouragement of his pursuit of music was always there, and soon his love of guitar began, which also led to mastering of other instruments over the years.
A University of Connecticut alumnus, Art studied music there before delving into a career of 15+ years as an original and cover band lead guitarist before joining School of Rock full-time.
Although involved with several recording and performing projects with bands such as Lazy Sunday and Rhythm Method, his most notable project was THE ZONE - a Philadelphia-based band whose touring schedule featured them in front of hundreds of people every week in major metropolitan areas, shore points, and resorts up and down the east coast, playing thousands of stages, venues, and stadiums, with Art as lead guitarist and backing vocalist. Performances included NFL pregame and halftime shows as the contracted band for The Washington Redskins, and opening act for notable bands and artists such as Jimmy Buffet and Fuel.
Transitioning out of touring, Art has worked with his wife, Jamie (School of Rock instructor and GM) for the past couple of years on their original collaboration in the studio. Forming together their independent record label OzoneBaby Records, their band FATE28 released an August 2011 debut album Experimental Tendencies, which was featured in Guitar World Magazine's March 2012 "Introducing" section as a promising new artist release.
Art honed in on another passion over the course of creating the album, which is working on the recording side as a producer.
Art is excited to share his knowledge and skills with students at School of Rock in the newly-constructed studio facility, outfitted with the latest Pro Tools technology and software. He is a dedicated teacher who has inspired and positively-influenced so many who have had the opportunity to work with him.
In the Summer Art keeps busy as a National All-Star Tour Director for School of Rock USA, rockin' to raise money for great charitable organizations while touring and playing famous clubs, venues, and festivals like Lollapalooza. The 'Rock The House' tours have raised proceeds to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities all over the country, and 'Love Hope Strength' finds bone marrow donors raising awareness with the audience members at the All-Star shows, and matched over a dozen bone barrow donors from last year's All-Star tour to help in the fight against cancer!
Art also jams with notable artists at various School of Rock promotional events - most recently, on-stage as guitarist on "Jellybelly" by The Smashing Pumpkins with their original drummer Jimmy Chamberlin (Smashing Pumpkins, Zwan) at Chicago's Montrose Room 2014; and as drummer on-stage with Earl Slick (New York Dolls, David Bowie), Jim Peterik, Slim Jim Phantom (Stray Cats), and Eric Bloom (Blue Oyster Cult) in Milwaukee 2013.

Jamie has been with School of Rock Chatham since its doors opened in January 2007, teaching keyboards and voice, which eventually evolved to performing dual roles as an instructor and General Manager. Jamie moved to the NYC metro area from Lexington, Kentucky in 2005. Her love of music began with singing and playing piano at an early age, performing in church, school, pageants, and local fairs. She added saxophone via school marching band, and pursued all three instruments with years of formal training. In addition to music, Jamie enjoys art and fashion. She paints and sketches as a creative outlet, and has had artwork displayed in Guitar World Magazine's online gallery. You will see more of her handiwork on the walls throughout SoR Chatham! Valedictorian of her high school class, Jamie also earned an Honors Degree in an accelerated three years from The University of Kentucky. It was there that she studied music theory, bought her first Taylor acoustic guitar, and took lessons on guitar to begin writing and performing her own original music live. Jamie is a songwriter, performer, and producer, and released Experimental Tendencies -the LP debut for her original band FATE28 - duo project with husband (School of Rock Music Director), Art Lima. Together, they co-founded the independent label OzoneBaby Records. Long Island native Matt Moliti started playing guitar at the age of 13. Initially inspired by 70's Progressive Rock bands such as Genesis, King Crimson, and Pink Floyd, Matt would eventually develop a love for heavy metal, which dominates his life and musicality to this day (although he still considers progressive music at the core of his creative being). Matt attended the Berklee College of Music before returning home to concentrate on honing his technical craft and songwriting skills, eventually culminating to create Dark Empire, the Progressive Metal band in which Matt is the main songwriter, guitarist, and death vocalist. Dark Empire's first album, Distant Tides, was released in 2006 and garnered rave reviews and international press throughout the underground metal scene, and even came in 2nd place in the magazine Brave Words Bloody Knuckles "top independent release of 2006" year end poll. In 2008, Dark Empire released their sophomore album, Humanity Dethroned, which also saw them move out of the studio and hit the stage for the first time, making their live debut at the Texas Madfest in 2007. Dark Empire just released their 3rd album, From Refuge to Ruin in 2012, which Matt considers to be "by far, the best thing I've ever done."As a guitarist, Matt cites Michael Romeo (Symphony X), Allan Holdsworth, and Jeff Loomis (Nevermore) to be among his primary influences, and has received praise from guitarists such as Joe Stump, Rusty Cooley, and Christian Muenzer (Necrophagist, Obscura). He also enjoys listening to a wide range of music from all styles of metal, progressive rock, jazz/fusion, classical, and 80's goth/new wave. He believes having a diverse palette keeps his creative ideas fresh and free from stagnation.Matt is very passionate about teaching and directing shows for School of Rock Chatham, and enjoys aiding in the development of these very talented students immensely. He feels School of Rock is a great outlet for students to receive the ultimate music instruction and enjoy playing music while learning the art of performance and working together as a band!Matt plays exclusively: Vigier Guitars http://www.vigierusa.com Pickboy guitar picks http://www.osiamo.com/pickboypicks

Southern New Hampshirer Aaron Cloutier began his musical journey at the age of 10 when he picked up his father's guitar and started banging on the strings. The seed was planted and countless nights of playing air guitar to Metallica records soon followed. The air guitar was then replaced with a beat-up old classical re-stringed lefty-guitar and the obsession was cemented. After being self taught for many years, Aaron decided it best to learn the language and fill in the musical gaps by attending professional music lessons under the tutelage of Gardner Murphy, where he developed a strong understanding and appreciation for music on an intellectual as well as an "esoteric" level. Aaron realized 'the more you know the less you are limited.' Aaron was encouraged by Gardner to apply what he had been taught and teach others, and since then Aaron has been sharing his knowledge with students, with 5+ years teaching experience.During this time he immersed himself in music business, recording and songwriting. The latter of which he delved further into with his studio projects DAVOLA (solo) and ANIMUS RISING where he honed his writing, arranging, singing, playing and producing chops. In 2009 Aaron relocated to Phoenix Arizona to attend The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences and study audio engineering. During his studies, Aaron became certified in Avid's Pro Tools 8.0.3 and Apple's Logic Pro 9 professional recording software as well as Wave's Plug Ins, and upon graduating, he landed his first recording job as Assistant Engineer on the Latin Metal band ILL NINO's 2010 release "Dead New World". Aaron is thrilled and honored to be a part of the School of Rock Chatham family and is eager to pass his knowledge and passion for music onto his students, while he continues to reach the next level in his own educational endeavors.

Bryan has been playing drums for10+ years. As a self-taught drummer he was inspired by local shows he would attend as a teen and learned from watching the drummers. Bryan used to be quiet and shy, and drumming was the outlet that truly helped him break out of his shell.' After playing with a few small groups throughout high school, Bryan knew his calling was drumming and wanted to take his talent to a whole new level. In 2005, he attended the P.I.T. (Percussion Institute of Technology) Program at Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA. By learning from top-notch teachers, such as three-time World Snare Drum Champion Rob Carson (Bryan's technique teacher) and Rock Drum teacher Glen Sobel, he learned more about the ins-and-outs drumming, music theory and reading, the music business and got even more real-life playing experience. After his time spent in Hollywood, Bryan moved to Washington State and joined up with one of the more in demand reggae/ska/rock bands in the Pacific Northwest, Rise N' Shine. In addition he also played for number of other other groups ranging from Hip-hop, Reggae and of course Rock. For years, he rocked out shows but again felt the itch for something more so he moved back to his roots here in New Jersey. Now at School of Rock Chatham, Bryan has found his niche and passion in teaching. He is excited to be a part of the faculty and to be sharing his knowledge and love of music with the SoR students.

Will is a session musician, composer, arranger and teacher. He has expertise in electric bass, upright bass, music theory and technique on other stringed-instruments, as well as other multi-instrumental proficiency. Will studied with Sue Williams, Andy Eulau, Steve Freides, and Kurt Muroki. He writes, records, and performs with his bands SWEET FIX and Blue Food. He obtained his Associates in Recording/Engineering at Bergen Community College and is currently studying Classical Upright Bass and Music Education at New Jersey City University as well as Composition and Conducting, privately, with Thomas Carlo Bo. As a teacher, Will's great experience, through wide aspects of music, reflects in his hands-on, multi-angle approach to music. Having taken up electric bass over 10 years ago, Will became totally engrossed in music, quickly picking up the upright bass and tuba in high school. During his high school career, Will assisted his teacher, Bernie Mathews, in teaching a classical guitar class at the Anna C. Scott school in Leonia, in addition to being involved in the LHS Orchestra playing excerpts from Bizet's Carmen. Will has subsequently helped Mathews with his guitar classes at NJCU in addition to teaching at School of Rock. Will's proficiency in reading music and understanding theory has helped earn him the position of Principal Upright Bass in the NJCU Orchestra. Other aspects of his wide view of music can be seen not only in his performances, but in his countless studio hours tracking various bands - including some of his own work; freelance live sound engineering; and the repairing and rebuilding of stringed instruments.

  • “It is hard to articulate the pride you feel as a parent when you see your kid perform on-stage. As a music teacher for fifteen years, it is easy to say that choosing the Downingtown School of Rock for our fifteen year-old son, was indeed, the best parenting decision we have made yet. ”
    — Susan B., parent, Unionville, PA
  • “When we decided to send our daughter to SOR, we never imagined what a positive impact that one decision would have on her life. She transformed from a shy, quiet kid to a confident, incredible musician, with an active social life and many close friends she considers her second family. The amazing memories she’ll always have of touring and performing with the All-Stars at world-renowned venues and festivals are just icing on the cake. ”

  • “School of Rock has been a great community for these kids. It is an alternative to extracurricular activities that a lot of these kids can really fit into where they might feel out of place in other arenas. ”
