Once again living in the Lehigh Valley, and teaching here at the School of Rock, Duane feel like his musical life has come full circle. His musical journey started 25 years ago, a few miles down the road,. After a year or so of bugging his parents, they finally gave in and bought him a guitar. Shortly after, he began weekly lessons with Lee Daniels, a talented jazz guitarist from Bethlehem. He studied under Lee from the age of 6 until he left for college. His first musical endeavors centered around the grunge and classic rock he heard on the radio on the 90s, but that limited range of music wasn’t enough. Thanks to the breadth and depth of Lee’s musical knowledge, he grew to enjoy and appreciate a wide range of eras and genres. Lee turned him on to blues rock guitarists like Hendrix, Duane Allman, and Mike Bloomfield, jazz greats like Miles Davis, Bill Evans, and Charles Mingus, great songwriters like Dylan, the Beatles and the Band, classical composers like Beethoven and Stravinsky, and even Indian Classical musicians like Ali Akbar Khan. Duane always had an affinity for improvisational music, so his introduction of bands like the Grateful Dead and Phish struck a nerve that resonates to this day.
In 1999, Duane left the Lehigh Valley for Boston and the Berklee College of Music. There he studied Classical Composition and Contemporary Writing and Production, which allowed him to dig deeper into his love of writing music. Duane's love of diverse styles of music revealed itself here too. He found my voice writing “classical” music (meaning music for symphony orchestra and chamber ensembles) but was always drawn back to the guitar and rock and roll. Duane was working for the Boston Symphony, seeing the music of Bartok and Sibelius, but making sure to catch Radiohead when they were in town. He was sitting with my friends bands playing everything from funky improvised jam music to spacy indie rock, then going home to work on a string quartet he was writing.
Duane was fortunate to work with many great teachers while in Boston, most notably, John Bavicchi. Like Lee Daniels earlier, his teaching extended beyond just showing theory or technique. He shared with me his favorite composers, and favorite music. He showed Duane what that music meant to him, and how the ultimate goal as musicians is to communicate something more than just the notes on the page. Like Lee, John went beyond just a teacher and became a friend and mentor.
Duane graduated from Berklee in 2004, and received the Harry Ellis Dickson award for graduating composers. He has been commissioned to write pieces for groups ranging from brass quintet, to chamber choir, to solo recorder. Duane has played guitar, bass, and on occasion, drums and keys in bands throughout his life, and he enjoys every aspect of writing, playing, and studying music.
After meeting the mother of his beautiful daughter, Duane moved back to the Lehigh Valley in 2009. She was born in 2010, and since then the focus of his life has been being the best father he can while overseeing the growth of the amazing students here at the School of Rock. With the time left over, he continues to write music for the various commissions that comes his way, as well as for his own enjoyment.

Thom Eiser was born and raised in the heartland of sunny, rural Indiana. At age two, Thom started taking piano lessons. Sometime during his humble origins in local community musical theatre, he became enamored with the poignant romance and high-brow buffoonery that is classical voice. After a short game of "pin-the-tail-on-the-atlas," Thom ended up majoring in vocal performance at Moravian College, where he enjoyed taking part in such disparate ensembles as vocal jazz, Baroque ensemble, improv ensemble, opera ensemble, and somehow still found time to star as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar during his final year. Well-versed in harmonic theory and borderline obsessive about rhythmic devices, Thom prides himself on his ability to express his passion for music theory as well as performance techniques in a fashion that is infectious to students. He makes an effort to help them better understand what makes their favorite music tick, and introduces them to new music in the hopes of broadening their horizons. In his spare time, Thom can be found hard at work on several songwriting endeavors, ranging from indie-pop to electronic, both solo and in tandem with his wife.

Carlos Plaza has been playing drums for nearly 20 years. He started at the age of 9 taking lessons at a small music shop in downtown Ottawa, in Ontario Canada. Carlos' teacher was very particular about him perfecting the basics using just a practice pad before he was allowed to purchase a drum set. This might be why he fell in love with the art of teaching since the basics are the most important. The fundamental principles of drums are concrete and the better you have them the better you get. He is proficient in the Moeller Method for stick grip, heel up and heel down technique for the bass drum and has extensive training with the 40 rudiments.
